Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyunwoo.

Hyunwoo: Hello, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hello.

Hyunwoo: Ah, Kyeong-eun—you're drinking coffee today, too.

Kyeong-eun: This morning, too, I bought a big cup of joe on my way.

Hyunwoo: I'm drinking coffee, too, now. Which brand of coffee shop do you go to the most these days?

Kyeong-eun: These days, because there's a new Holly's Coffee near work, I'm going to Holly's Coffee every single day, and normally I often go to Starbucks.

Hyunwoo: When we talk about the names of different brands now, shall we repeat them a bit slowly?

Kyeong-eun: Okay. So the place I get coffee every morning is Holly's Coffee.

Hyunwoo: “Holly's Coffee.” (Holly's Coffee.) Everyone—if you come to Korea you'll probably see one. There's Holly's Coffee, and also you go to Starbucks?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I often go to Starbucks, too. Starbucks.

Hyunwoo: Starbucks. And what other coffee shops to you often go to?

Kyeong-eun: Every Monday I go to Caffe Bene.

Hyunwoo: There's our LanguageCast meeting that we do, isn't there? So you go to Caffe Bene. I wanted to talk about it a bit, actually.

Kyeong-eun: Me, too. I have a lot to say.

Hyunwoo: I have a lot to say, and it's interesting. Originally, before, there was a time when there weren't many cafes. In Korea.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. In Korea there were hardly any, sure.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. At that time, I think we were probably high school students, and there were places called cafes, but it didn't feel like now where these franchise cafes have spread like wildfire.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, you're right.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. So I hadn't gone to a cafe in high school, and in freshman year of university, usually I think I just went to a nearby privately-run cafe.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, that's right. My freshman and sophomore years, actually, I didn't go to cafes because I didn't really like them, and there are times when you have some person you have to meet, aren't there? At those times there was nothing I could do but go to a cafe.

Hyunwoo: Someone you have to meet?

Kyeong-eun: Like... There are adults or important people you have to meet, aren't there?

Hyunwoo: Sure. For me it isn't so much an important person, but I just want to study with my friends, and there aren't any seats at the university library—or, you can't talk at the library, can you? So it was because I wanted to study with friends.

Kyeong-eun: You're saying you did that from our time [in university]?

Hyunwoo: Yeah. My freshman year.

Kyeong-eun: Even in our freshman or sophomore year?

Hyunwoo: Yeah. From freshman year I wanted to go somewhere because I wanted to study, but besides cafes there wasn't any suitable place to go. So those places that were really popular back in the day, that were like cafes... Even now people go sometimes, right? Dandelion Territory, it was called. There was the place that was a cafe/diner/place to have seminars called Dandelion Territory. I started to go there. At that time, after six months had passed, Dandelion Territory had too many people, too. So with the thought, “Isn't there somewhere good?”, we ended going to coffee shops and cafes.

Kyeong-eun: Oh, you started going young, Hyunwoo.

Hyunwoo: Yup. But at least at that time, it didn't seem like there were many people who went because they wanted to drink coffee; instead they went because what could they do?—there was nowhere to go, but these days I think people go because they really like coffee.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. That's right. And there are really a lot of people who go because they want to drink coffee. And nowadays there are a lot of people who go to read a book alone, and people who go to do work, and it seems like people end up going for various reasons, but we were talking about Caffe Bene, weren't we?

Hyunwoo: At first, while there weren't many cafes, the very first coffee brand that people eagerly made and spread quickly was Starbucks, of course.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. In the beginning, it started with Starbucks.

Hyunwoo: When Starbucks first came out, it was so expensive—more expensive than food. A meal was 3,000-4,000 won, but since the price of coffee was 4,000-5,000 won, people were saying, “This is messed up,” and...

Kyeong-eun: It's for wealthy escapist chicks. [If you know a better translation for 된장녀, please please share it.^^]

Hyunwoo: Yeah. I didn't go much. I didn't go, and there were even people who said, “Don't go,” but since Starbucks spread so quickly, people got used to it shortly thereafter, and it became real natural to meet at Starbucks.

Kyeong-eun: And prices went up. So while the cost of a meal before was 3-4,000 won, since these days it's 5-6,000 won, or 7,000 won, coffee prices ended up being the same, of course.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. These days, it's not even that strange to pay 10,000 won for a meal. So coffee got cheaper, and while at first there was only Starbucks, later other franchises competing with Starbucks popped up, right?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Coffee Bean came out, and what all is there again? There's Twosome Place, too.

Hyunwoo: There's Twosome Place, and there are coffee shops called Angel-in-Us that were made a lot in Korea, aren't there? I think probably before Angel-in-Us, it was called Java Coffee: Java Coffee turned into Angel-in-Us. I'm not sure. A lot of Angel-in-Us stores popped up. And a lot of Dunkin Donuts stores, too. As little by little these places came out everywhere, there got to be a lot of places for people to gather, but one inconvenient aspect—when you go to a coffee shop, lately all, like you said, there are a lot of people who go to do work, reading a book or carrying a computer... At places like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts they started to turn off wi-fi. Or they started to lock it so that not everyone can use it. So when people were feeling dissatisfied, suddenly Caffe Bene came out and offered free wi-fi, and any anyone could use it, and they started to sell waffles that Starbucks or other places weren't selling.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, there are a lot of coffee shops that sell waffles, but they don't sell them like that at those big chain stores.

Hyunwoo: That's right. So at first it seems like women went because they like it a lot, and

Kyeong-eun: And actually these days really wherever you go, there's a Caffe Bene.

Hyunwoo: That's right. I don't know how they did it, but they really made a lot of them.

Kyeong-eun: Even in extremely small neighborhoods, they all have Caffe Benes.

Hyunwoo: So while Starbucks was too expensive at first, but like somewhere they had people going because they got people used to it, now, even though you don't eat waffles, even though you just drink coffee, it seems like they have you going to Caffe Bene, since you see them often, since they're everywhere.

Kyeong-eun: I think it's really surprising. If you say “Wow, there's no Caffe Bene here,” next time you go there, one's popped right up.

Hyunwoo: So these days you can see it as the best selling coffee franchise.

Kyeong-eun: But actually, I hate Caffe Bene.

Hyunwoo: Why?

Kyeong-eun: It really tastes bad. In my opinion, it tastes bad, but nowadays since I see them all the time, when I want to go in somewhere quick, or when there aren't any seats, I end up going to Caffe Bene. It can't be helped. I end up going.

Hyunwoo: And one of the things Caffe Bene has going for it is that there are a lot of comfortable seats there. There are a lot of sofas, and in Starbucks's case, it's hard to sit for a long time in the hard chairs (You're right—it's definitely uncomfortable.) Caffe Bene, especially now since I live near Hongdae, in the morning, Sunday morning, Saturday morning, when I want to do some work, or read a book, or study for a little while at a cafe, if I walk just a little bit, I can go to two Caffe Benes. So I think, “Shall I go to this Caffe Bene, or that one?” and having chosen one, the chairs there are really comfortable, more comfortable than my chairs at home, and the people, too, are nice.

Kyeong-eun: And did you know? Caffe Bene has it's own radio show. They're running the radio show, aren't they? I understand that they say, “This song was requested at some Caffe Bene.” But I hate that too. I go to a cafe just to concentrate, but though I can understand people chatting loudly, when I hear that radio show, I keep ending up concentrating on what it's saying. I want to concentrate on my work, and what I'm talking about, but in my experience it mucks up my ability to concentrate. So I don't care for it, but there are lots of people who like it.

Hyunwoo: Same here. I don't really care for hearing that stuff when I go, but still it's different, isn't it? It's different, and it seems like people who want to go and just be there comfortably by themselves would like it.

Kyeong-eun: A lot of people seem to like it, too. Entertainers come on a lot and host it, you know. So people like it more, it seems.

Hyunwoo: So lately there are really a lot of Caffe Benes, but once another year has gone by, I've no idea how things will be. Caffe Benes first started appearing a lot almost two years ago, one year ago (Not long ago, of course.) It hasn't been very long, but now truly wherever you go, there's a Caffe Bene. So it's quite interesting, and I can't help but end up going there a lot, and also at other cafes something's a bit uncomfortable, and the chairs are uncomfortable, so I guess I end up looking for a Caffe Bene again.

Kyeong-eun: You've gotten used to it already. Too used to it, you know.

Hyunwoo: I'm too used to it, and I'm going as much as Caffe Bene could wish.

Kyeong-eun: And there's a computer at every Caffe Bene. There are computers at Holly's Coffee, too, but not at every one, while at Caffe Bene every time there's one iMac. So when you want to use the internet but you didn't bring your computer, you can use it anytime. (I think that's great.) And when you look for wi-fi, too, it's not difficult, (That's right.) “Bene” comes up, so if you click on that, you can use the internet straight away, and so it seems extremely convenient, and I think they're doing well because they have those aspects.

Hyunwoo: For me, still, instead of franchise coffee shops like Caffe Bene, I often mean to go to coffee shops I like a bit, too, and I hope a lot of other brands come out.

Kyeong-eun: I also mean to go to other small coffee shops. Actually, there are a lot of cozy, little coffee shops, aren't there? But actually because wi-fi is a problem, I end up not going much, and when I end up going to a franchise, people don't look at me funny. Even if I'm there for about 5 hours, no one cares, but I feel like people look at me funny at small coffee shops. If I'm there for about 2 or 3 hours, because I start to think that I have to get up, what can I do?—I end up going to a franchise store, I guess.

Hyunwoo: I understand that point, too. Now we've talked about Caffe Bene, and about how a lot of Korean cafes have appeared, everyone—in your country where's the coffee chain store you end up going to the most? Everybody?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Everyone, please leave us a comment telling us.

Hyunwoo: What kind of coffee shop you come to a lot, whether Starbucks is the most famous, if it's popular, or if there are other chain stores,

Kyeong-eun: And where the coffee shop is you often go to.

저희는 TalkToMeInKorean.com에서 코멘트 기다리고 있겠습니다.

Hyunwoo: Please let us know. We'll be waiting at TalkToMeInKorean.com for your comments.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. So long, everyone.

Hyunwoo: Good-bye. Have a nice day.

Kyeong-eun: Yes.

Kyeong-eun: Yes.
