Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyunwoo.

Hyunwoo: Hello, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, everyone.

Hyunwoo: Hello, everybody. Today we want to talk about something that Koreans sometimes say they can't get used to when they go to foreign countries.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, I haven't gotten used to it yet, either.

Hyunwoo: Really? (Yeah.) And also this isn't something that you can only feel if Koreans go to another country: It's also something you can feel when Koreans eat with foreign friends in Korea, or also when drinking coffee at a coffee shop or something.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. These days there are a lot of foreigners here, aren't there? So it seems like Koreans can feel it often.

Hyunwoo: That's right. Because, Koreans think it's extremely natural to share their food.

Kyeong-eun: And they think it's important, really.

Hyunwoo: They think it's supposed to be that way, but there might be a lot of people in other countries who think that way too... I dunno. I guess there might also be areas in western countries where people don't think “This is definitely right” or “You absolutely have to act like this.”

Kyeong-eun: Yes. It's customary for Koreans to share their food. So, for example, at a coffee shop maybe I want to eat a bagel. In that case, when I buy a bagel, I ask my friends if they want some. And when I ask, “Would you like a bagel?” even if they say they don't want one, if they say so and I just buy one for me, I ask again if they'd like to try some: “Are you sure you don't want any?” So we end up sharing at least a little.

Hyunwoo: Rather than really wanting to share, we do it because originally we've done that and are used to it, so having clearly asked our friends, “Do you want some bagel?”, even though we're told “No thanks,” we ask once again after we buy it.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: “You really don't want any? C'mon,” we say.

Kyeong-eun: Try a little.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Even though my friends say they don't want any, I still give them some.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: You could say that's how Koreans think and feel, but why are we like that?

Kyeong-eun: Since a long time ago Korea had been a little poor, hadn't it? So food was extremely valuable. If you had even just a little to eat, you wanted to be sure to share at least a little of it.

Hyunwoo: If you asked me what I think about that theory, actually Korea is not the only place that has experienced poverty.

Kyeong-eun: Of course.

Hyunwoo: So it seems a little strange.

Kyeong-eun: But there's this, too: The reason we share, actually it's not just to fill our stomachs, it's to build intimacy. It's to get a little closer to each other, I think. For example, with Korean food you eat the same stew and side dishes together, don't you? So we could also think that that kind of thing is dirty, couldn't we? By sharing our food together, I think it has the meaning that “I'm this close to this person. We've become this close.”

Hyunwoo: That's right. That makes sense too, but other countries, too, are just the same, pizza or spaghetti or those kinds of things can all be eaten with other people. But Koreans... I dunno... not just a meal, but even if it's some snack, or coffee, water, juice, fruit and these kinds of things, we don't care whether we need to, or if it's convenient to—we just share it.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: So since I was young I've always been curious: “Why do we have to share our food?”

Hyunwoo: I've never once wondered why. Because since I was young, my parents always taught me “Sharing is right.” And “Good people share their food.” Because I've been taught this way, I guess I've never once thought that it was strange. And it was like that at school, too.

Hyunwoo: But what I've always wondered since I was young is: for example, my dad and also his friend are there, or my dad, his friend, and his friend's son, if we four go to a public bath, sometimes I finish first, don't I? In that case, I want to drink something before my dad comes out. 'Cause I'm thirsty. But even though I have money to get a drink on my own, for some reason I get uncomfortable. If I'm drinking something by myself, it seems like I'm a bad person, I think I have to ask the others, too, if they want to drink something, and even if later I can buy them something, even then it seems like I shouldn't drink alone first.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: I always had that burden. At the same time, I grew up thinking, “Since I'm thirsty wouldn't it be okay if I just drank something?” and later having traveled abroad and made foreign friends, there aren't many places that strongly believe “We must eat things at the same time” like in Korea.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. And when the food comes out you have to eat together after waiting a little. It's always, “We have to do things together.” For Koreans.

Hyunwoo: On the other hand, if two people order a meal and one person's food comes out first, but the other's hasn't come out yet, because the other person's hasn't come out yet, letting the food that came out first cool, and just having to leave it there until it gets cold seems even stranger.

Kyeong-eun: Or you could share it first.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. But if it's something you don't want to share, or if the two people aren't especially close, you have to wait because you're thinking even if you can't share, you have to eat together.

Kyeong-eun: Yep. You wait.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. So while the food that comes out later is hot, the food that came out first is cold. But you're still eating together.

Kyeong-eun: And that seems more serious for women.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

Kyeong-eun: More than men, women have to be sure to share their food; even if it's just a really little piece of chocolate, they're sure to share it.

Hyunwoo: I think it's interesting. So in Korea even if you go eat something like this, if there are people around, they want to share it, and also if someone else is eating, we think, “Naturally, they'll give me some, right?”

Kyeong-eun: Or we think that they will at least ask us to try some.

Hyunwoo: If you don't ask, like you said, and eat it alone, you can start to look like you're a bit inconsiderate or rude. So because Koreans hate to look like that, they always ask the people around them.

Kyeong-eun: They ask, “You wanna try this?”

Hyunwoo: Yeah. “Would you like to try some?” So sometimes while normally living among other Koreans if you meet foreigners, when you're all hungry, you can eat whatever you want. But since I'm Korean, I think I have to take care of them and share, and when foreigners see that, they also think, “Why is he trying to give this to me? It's not mine.” A lot of times foreigners think, “Since I bought it, I'll just eat it by myself,” but while you can notice this kind of cultural difference, it's not an issue of right or wrong, but one problem is that we haven't gotten used to it yet.

Kyeong-eun: It seems like we haven't gotten used to something different.

Hyunwoo: Yes.

Kyeong-eun: Since I was too accustomed in Korean culture.

Hyunwoo: Even though I know about those differences, every time (I'm often surprised.) it seems like there's always something surprising. So I want to ask our listeners a question. I wonder how often you have the experience of sharing food like this in your country. So please let us know if, not just with meals, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but when you have a small snack, or coffee or those kinds of things, if someone is next to you, do you eat alone, or do you think, “I have to share some with this person.”

Kyeong-eun: Please leave us a comment and tell us.

Hyunwoo: Yes. So, we'll be waiting for your stories.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. Have a nice day, everyone.

Hyunwoo: Have a nice day.
