Hyunwoo: It's iyagi time yet again.

경은: 네. 이야기 시간이에요.

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun?

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yes?

현우: 우유 좋아하세요?

Hyunwoo: Do you like milk?

경은: 정말 싫어해요.

Kyeong-eun: I really hate it.

현우: 우유 싫어해요?

Hyunwoo: You hate milk?

경은: 정말 정말 정말 싫어해요.

Kyeong-eun: I really really really hate it.

현우: 우유를 원래 싫어했어요? 아니면 최근에 싫어하게 됐어요?

Hyunwoo: Have you always hated milk? Or have you just recently come to hate it?

경은: 원래 싫어했어요.

Kyeong-eun: I've always hated it.

현우: 그래요?

Hyunwoo: Really?

경은: 원래 싫어해서, 절대 안 먹었었는데, 최근에 조금 마셔요.

Kyeong-eun: Because I've always hated it, I never used to drink it, but lately I drink a little.

현우: 조금 마시면 얼마나 조금 마셔요?

Hyunwoo: If you drink a little, how little do you drink?

경은: 일 년에 한 번 정도?

Kyeong-eun: Once a year?

현우: 일 년에 한 번은 왜 마셔요?

Hyunwoo: Why do you drink it once a year?

경은: 억지로 마셔요. 마실 게 없을 때.

Kyeong-eun: I'm forced to drink it. When there's nothing to drink.

현우: 마실 게 없거나 어디에 갔는데 누가 우유를 줄 때?

Hyunwoo: When there's nothing to drink, or someone somewhere gives you milk?

경은: 네. 어쩔 수 없이.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. And there's nothing I can do.

현우: 그러면 커피에 들어가는 우유도 안 마셔요?

Hyunwoo: In that case, you don't even drink coffee with milk in it?

경은: 그래서 라떼를 싫어해요. 현우 씨는 우유 좋아해요?

Kyeong-eun: So I hate lattes. Do you like milk?

현우: 저도 우유를 안 좋아하는데, 중학교 때나 초등학교 때 보면 (초등학교 때) 네. 학교에서 우유 가 나왔잖아요.

Hyunwoo: I don't like it either, but in middle school or elementary school (Elementary school) Yeah. And in school, they give you milk, don't they?

경은: 맞아요. 그래서 제가 우유를 싫어하는 거예요. 초등학교 때 우유가 매일 나오잖아요. 엄마는 당연히 제가 키가 컸으면 좋겠고, 우유를 먹으면 몸에 좋으니까 그런 우유를 항상 시켜줬는데 저는 우유를 먹으면 배가 아픈 거예요. 그리고 사실 배가 아픈 것보다 우유가 왜 맛있는지 모르겠어요. 너무 싫은 거예요. 그래서 항상 엄마 몰래 숨겨 뒀다가 버리고 이랬어요. 그래서 제가 키가 작은 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. So I hate milk. They give us milk every day in elementary school, don't they? My mom of course wished that I was tall, and since drinking milk is good for you, she always got milk for me, but if I drink milk, my stomach hurts. And actually more than my stomach hurting, I don't see how milk is delicious. It's so awful. So always after secretly hiding it I'd throw it away, like this. So I'm short, I guess.

현우: 경은 씨 키 안 작아요.

Hyunwoo: You aren't short.

경은: 정말요? 근데 왜 웃어요?

Kyeong-eun: Really? Then why are you laughing?

현우: 그냥 방송용 멘트. 경은 씨.

Hyunwoo: Just what we're broadcasting. Kyeong-eun?

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah?

현우: 초등학교 때 우리 아침 10시가 되면 항상 우유가 나왔잖아요.

Hyunwoo: In elementary school at 10 in the morning, they always brought us milk, didn't they?

경은: 맞아요. 10시.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Ten o'clock.

현우: 저는 우유가 싫지는 않았는데, 학교에서 주는 우유가 정말 맛이 없었어요. 맛이 없었고 그리고 우유 당번이라는 거를 해야 되기 때문에, 한 달에 며칠 정도는 순번이 돌아오면 제가 가서 우유를 가지고 와야 되는 거예요.

Hyunwoo: I didn't hate milk, but the milk they gave us at school was really bad. It tasted bad, and because we had to do something called milk duty, each month for a few days, when it was my turn, I had to go get the milk.

경은: 네. 저희 때만 해도 한 반에 50명 정도가 있었잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. When we were young, there were 50 students in a class, weren't there?

현우: 맞아요.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

경은: 그러니까 굉장히 무겁죠. 그걸 다 들고 오려면 굉장히 무거운데 학생들이 가서 가져와야 돼요.

Kyeong-eun: So it was extremely heavy, of course. If you wanted to bring all of them, it was extremely heavy, but the students have to get them.

현우: 그리고 한 반에 50명이 있어도, 전부 다 우유를 마시는 게 아니라 38명, 아니면 40명 정도가 신청을 해서 마시는데 가끔씩, 부족할 때가 있어요.

Hyunwoo: And even though there were 50 students at one time, it wasn't that all of them drank milk; 38 or 40 students were registered to receive milk, but sometimes there were times when there wasn't enough.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

현우: 네. 한 사람이 두 개씩 가져가고 신청 안 한 사람이 가져가고, 그러는 경우가 있어서 우유 당번이면 항상 “그 우유가 부족하지 않을까?” 고민을 해야 되는 거예요. 그래서 그런 것도 싫었고 나중에 커서는 우유를 마시기 싫으면 안 마셔도 되고 마시고 싶으면 언제든지 마실 수 있잖아요. 그래도 잘 안 마시게 된 것 같아요. 저도.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. One person took two, or someone who wasn't registered took one, since there were times like that, if you were on milk duty, you had to always worry whether it was enough milk. So that kind of thing was awful, and later when you've grown up, if you hate drinking milk, it's okay not to, and if you want to drink it, you can drink it whenever you want, can't you? Still, it seems like we turn out not drinking it much. Me included.

경은: 저는 배가 아파서 안 마시는 이유도 있고, 정말 맛이 없어요. 우유가 맛있어요? 저는 이해가 안 가요.

Kyeong-eun: Because my stomach hurts, I have a reason not to drink it, and it really tasted bad. Is milk delicious? I don't understand how.

현우: 경은 씨랑 저는 그러면 우유를 그럼 별로 좋아하지는 않는 것 같은데, 주변에 우유를 많이 마시는 사람들이 있죠?

Hyunwoo: In that case, it seems like we don't like milk very much, but there are people around us who drink a lot of milk, right?

경은: 네. 많죠.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Lots.

현우: “우유가 뼈에 좋다”, “칼슘을 많이 공급해 준다” 그리고 또 또 뭐가 있을까요?

Hyunwoo: “Milk is good for you bones,” “It's a great source of calcium,” and what all else is there?

경은: 피부도 좋아질까요?

Kyeong-eun: Your skin will become nice?

현우: 네. 피부도 좋아진다. 여러 가지 이유를 들어서 우유를 자주 마시는 분들이 있는데, 저는 별로...

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Your skin gets nice. There are people who drink milk often because there are several reasons to drink it, but for me, at least, it's not particularly...

경은: 저도 모르겠어요. 저희 엄마는 지금까지도 저한테 우유를 먹이고 싶어 하세요. 그래서 빵을 꼭 사오는 날은 우유를 같이 사오세요. 저희 엄마는 우유를 좋아하니까 “빵이랑 꼭 우유랑 같이 먹어야 된다.” 주장을 하시는 거예요. “뼈에 좋다. 키는 이제 안 크더라도 뼈에 좋기 때문에 꼭 마셔라.” 이렇게 말씀을 하시는데 저는 너무 싫어요.

Kyeong-eun: I don't get it either. Even now my mom wants to make me drink milk. So on days when my mom buys bread, she's sure to buy milk with it. Since she likes milk, she insists that “You definitely have to have bread and milk together.” “It's good for your bones. Even though you don't seem tall now, be sure to drink it because it's good for your bones.” She says things like this, but I really hate it.

현우: 근데 한 가지 서울 우유나 또 비슷한 유명한 브랜드 뭐가 있죠? 서울 우유가 제일 유명한데, 또 다른 우유.

Hyunwoo: But one of them... there's Seoul Milk or, what other similar famous brands are there again? Seoul Milk is the most famous, other milks...

경은: “맛있는 우유”

Kyeong-eun: “Tasty Milk”

현우: “맛있는 우유” 또 남양 우유.

Hyunwoo: “Tasty Milk,” or Namyang Milk.

경은: 맞아요. 남양 우유.

Kyeong-eun: Right. Namyang Milk.

현우: 이런 우유들은 슈퍼마켓에 가면 살 수 있잖아요. 편의점이나 슈퍼에 가면 살 수 잇는데 그런 우유들은 저도 정말 맛이 있는 줄 모르겠어요. 근데 제가 가끔씩 광주에 고향에 가면 저희 엄마가 마시는 우유가 있어요.

Hyunwoo: You can buy these milks at the supermarket, can't you? You can get them at a convenience stores or supermarkets, but I really don't know if those milks taste good. But sometimes if I go to my hometown Gwangju, they have the milk that my mom drinks.

경은: 광주 우유가 따로 있어요?

Kyeong-eun: Is there a Gwangju Milk, too?

현우: 광주 우유도 아니고 제주도 우유예요.

Hyunwoo: It's not Gwangju Milk, either, but Jeju Milk.

경은: 제주도 우유가 따로 있어요?

Kyeong-eun: There's Jeju Milk, too?

현우: 네. 제주도에서 주문을 해서.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Ordered from Jeju.

경은: 제주도에서요?

Kyeong-eun: From Jeju?

현우: 받아서 드시고 계시는 그런 우유가 있어요. 그래서 그 우유는 슈퍼마켓에서 살 수가 없고 주문을 한 사람들한테만 보내 주는 거예요.

Hyunwoo: There's the milk that she orders. So you can't buy it at the supermarket, and instead it's just sent to the people who've ordered it.

경은: 맛이 달라요?

Kyeong-eun: Does it taste different?

현우: 네. 그래서 “이 우유가 굉장히 비싼데 뭐가 그렇게 특별할까?”하고 마셔 봤거든요. 근데 정말 맛있는 거예요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. So I tried it while thinking, “This milk is extremely expensive, so will there be something accordingly special about it?” you see. But it's really good.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

현우: 네.

Hyunwoo: Yeah.

경은: 건강에도 좋겠어요.

Kyeong-eun: Must be good for your health, too.

현우: 네. 아무래도 공장에서 만들어지는 게 아니고 조금 자연에 가까운 그런 맛이 나요. 그리고 굉장히 비싸다고 들었어요. 다른 우유의 세 배? (정말요?) 네. 그런데 매주 받아서 드시는 걸로 알고 있어요. 그래서 그런 우유라면 가끔씩 마셔도 괜찮겠다는 생각이 들어요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. It doesn't taste at all like something made on a farm, but rather like something a little closer to nature. And I've heard it's extremely expensive. Three times other milks? (Really?) Yeah. But I understand that people get it each week. So I think that if you drink that kind of milk, at least, it'll be good.

경은: 저는 사실은 예전에 아침을 못 먹고 다닐 때, 배는 고픈데 따로 먹을 게 없더라고요. 그래서 엄마가 항상 우유를 마시라고 했으니까 우유를 마셔야겠다 싶어서 저지방 우유를 마신 적이 있어요. 저지방 우유를 한 그래도 세 달 정도 계속 마신 적이 있었는데, 저지방 우유는 마시면 배가 안 아프더라고요. 그런 것도 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, when I used to not eat breakfast, I was hungry but I think I didn't have anything to eat. So since my mom always said to drink some milk, because it seems like I had to drink it, I've tried drinking low-fat milk. So I drank it constantly for as much as three months, but when I drink low-fat milk, I believe my stomach doesn't hurt. So there's that, too.

현우: 저는 요즘에 주변에 우유를 마시는 사람들이 가끔씩 눈에 보이고 그리고 또 우유를 안 좋아하는 사람들도 커피숍가면 항상 우유가 들어간 음료를 마시잖아요.

Hyunwoo: These days, sometimes I see people around me drinking milk, and even people who don't like milk always drink things with milk in them when they go to a cafe, don't they?

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

현우: 그래서 “우유 산업은 망하지 않겠구나.” 그런 생각이 들어요.

Hyunwoo: So it occurs to me, “Ah, the dairy industry won't go bankrupt.”

경은: 그런데 예전에 우유 산업이 너무 안 된다고 해서 국가에서 일부러 그런 캠페인 같은 걸 한 적이 있었어요. 사람들이 우유를 너무 안 먹는다. 그래서 우유가 남아돈다고 해가지고, 캠페인 굉장히 많이 했었어요.

Kyeong-eun: But before because they said the dairy industry was doing so poorly, there have been things like national campaigns. “People aren't drinking enough milk.” So because they said there was an overabundance of milk, they did quite a lot of campaigning.

현우: 억지로 마실 필요 있나요?

Hyunwoo: Do people need to be forced to drink it?

경은: 그러게요. 제가 생각할 때는 없는 것 같은데 필수 영양소라고 말하는 사람들도 많은 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: I agree. When I think about it, it seems like there's no need to force people to drink it, but I think there are also a lot of people who say it's an essential nutrient.

현우: 제 생각에는 제 개인적인 건강에 대한 의견은 조금 경은 씨랑 다르지만.

Hyunwoo: But I think my personal opinion on health is a little different from yours.

경은: 너무 다르죠.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, it's too different.

현우: 우유에 있는 영양소가 우유에만 있는 건 아닌 것 같아요. (네. 그렇죠.) 다른 데도 다 있고, 다른 거를 잘 먹으면 우유를 안 마셔도 괜찮다고 생각하는데 저희 집에서는 우유가 굉장히 중요하다고 생각하시는 것 같고 그래서 일부러 비싸지만 맛있는 우유를 주문해서 드시는 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: I think the nutrients in milk aren't only in milk. (Yeah. Right.) Other things have them all, and if you eat other things a lot, I think it's okay if you don't drink milk, but it seems like in our family we think milk is extremely important, and so I guess we intentionally order expensive but delicious milk.

경은: 네. 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. That's right.

현우: 저희 청취자 여러분들은 우유를 자주 드시는 지 궁금한데요.

Hyunwoo: But I'm curious if our listeners often drink milk.

경은: 여러분 우유 좋아하세요?

Kyeong-eun: Everyone, do you like milk?

현우: 저는 별로 안 좋아하는데 그래도 가끔씩 마시게 되면 그냥 아무 생각 없이 마셔요.

Hyunwoo: I don't particularly like it, but still if I sometimes end up drinking it, it's no big deal.

경은: 저는 좀 그런 포장을 중요시하잖아요. 예전에 그런 미국 드라마나 외국의 영화 같은 걸 보면 항상 우유가 예쁜 통에 이렇게 담겨져 있었던 기억이 났었어요. 요즘에 한국에서도 그렇게 종이 팩에 들어있는 우유가 아니라 그런 통에도 나오잖아요. 그 통을 보면 마시고 싶은 생각이 들기도 해요.

Kyeong-eun: For me, like, the package is important, isn't it? It'd occurred to me that before, when you watched American soaps or foreign films and such, milk came in pretty bottles. These days, in Korea too, besides the milk that comes in cartons, it also comes in those kinds of bottles, doesn't it? When I see them, I also think that I want to drink some.

현우: 예쁜 용기에 담겨있는 우유를 보면 경은 씨한테는 그런 우유만 팔아야겠네요.

Hyunwoo: Ah, so if you see milk in a pretty container, you have to only buy that kind of milk for Kyeong-eun.

경은: 혹시 여러분도 그런 생각 하신 적이 있는지 궁금해요.

Kyeong-eun: I'm curious whether our listeners have by any chance ever thought that way.

현우: 여러분의 나라에서는 우유가 얼마나 많이 소비가 되고 있는지 그리고 여러분은 실제로 우유를 얼마나 마시는 지 이야기해 주세요.
