Kyeong-eun: Hello, selcaholic Hyunwoo.

현우: 뭐라고요?

Hyunwoo: What'd you say?

경은: “셀카쟁이”.

Kyeong-eun: “Selcaholic.”

현우: 그런 말이 따로 있나요?

Hyunwoo: There's a word for that, too?

경은: 따로 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: There is.

현우: 따로 있다고 하더라도 저하고는 좀 다른 것 같은데요.

Hyunwoo: Even though I understand that you say there is, I think it's a bit different from what I am.

경은: 저는 남자가 그렇게 셀카를 자주 찍는 걸 처음 봤어요.

Kyeong-eun: I'd never seen a man do so much selca before.

현우: 그래요?

Hyunwoo: Really?

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

현우: 일단, 경은 씨. 여러분한테 우리 청취자 여러분한테 “셀카”가 뭔지 설명하고 넘어갈까요?

Hyunwoo: First off, Kyeong-eun—shall we start by explaining what “selca” is to everyone, to all our listeners?

경은: 네. 설명해 주세요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Please explain.

현우: 경은 씨가 설명해 주세요. (제가 설명할까요?) 경은 씨, 잘 하잖아요.

Hyunwoo: You please explain. (Shall I?) You do it well, don't you?

경은: 제가요?

Kyeong-eun: Me?

현우: 네.

Hyunwoo: Yeah.

경은: 현우 씨한테 지던데 항상.

Kyeong-eun: I lose to you. Always.

현우: 아니에요. 아니에요.

Hyunwoo: No you don't, no you don't.

경은: 아니에요?

Kyeong-eun: No?

현우: 네.

Hyunwoo: Yeah.

경은: 셀카는 “셀프 카메라”의 줄인 말이에요.

Kyeong-eun: Selca is short for self camera.

현우: Self Camera, 셀프 카메라.

Hyunwoo: Self camera.

경은: 셀프 카메라를 줄여서 셀카라고 해요.

Kyeong-eun: Having shortened it from self camera, we say selca.

현우: 네. 한마디로 자기 사진을 찍는 거예요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. In a word, it's taking pictures of yourself.

경은: 자기가 직접 자기 사진을 찍는 거죠.

Kyeong-eun: It's taking pictures directly of yourself.

현우: 그런데 저는 그렇게 잘 안 찍어요.

Hyunwoo: But I don't really do that.

경은: 정말요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

현우: 저는 셀프 카메라, 그러니까 셀카, “셀프 카메라”라는 말은 안 쓰죠?

Hyunwoo: I don't do self camera—so selca... We don't say self camera, right?

경은: 네. 안 써요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, we don't.

현우: 셀카를 많이 찍는 게 아니라 그냥 비디오를 많이 찍다 보니까 실수로.

Hyunwoo: It's not that a take a lot of selca pictures, but rather since I just shoot a lot of videos, by mistake.

경은: 효진 씨가 비웃고 있어요. 저기 멀리서.

Kyeong-eun: You're laughing at me. From there, far away.

현우: 실수로 사진을 찍는 거죠.

Hyunwoo: I take the pictures by mistake, of course.

경은: 실수로요? 어떻게 매번 실수를 할 수가 있어요? 하루에 한 번씩.

Kyeong-eun: By mistake? How can you make the mistake every time? Once a day.

현우: 일단 이 주제를 고른 이유가 저를 놀리거나 비난하기 위해서가 아닌 것 같고, 한국 사람들이 주로 이렇게 셀카를 많이 찍어서 외국 친구들이 한국 사람들은 “셀카 많이 찍는다.”라고 예전부터 얘기를 많이 했던 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: First of all, I don't think the reason we chose this topic was to make fun of me or criticize me, and because Koreans selca a lot, for a while now I think foreigners have been saying a lot that Koreans “selca a lot.”

경은: 맞아요. 제가 생각해도 한국 사람들은 셀카를 많이 찍는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I, too, think that Koreans seem to selca a lot.

현우: 왜일까요?

Hyunwoo: Why might that be?

경은: 그냥 한국 사람들은 사진 찍는 것도 좋아하지만, 사진을 찍히는 것도 굉장히 좋아하는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: It's just that Koreans like to take pictures, and I think they quite like having their picture taken a lot, too.

현우: 그런데 제 생각에는 다른 사람이 찍어 주는 사진은 잘 안 찍히고 싶어 하는 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: But in my opinion, I think they really don't want other people to take their pictures.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

현우: 그런 사람들이 많은 것 같고, 다른 사람들이 찍어 주면 어색하고 포즈 취해야 되는데, 혼자 찍으면 아무도 없을 때 귀여운 척, 예쁜 척 할 수 있잖아요. 그래서 셀카는 젊은 여학생들 (맞아요.) 여학생들이나 젊은 여성분들이 많이 찍는 걸로 알려져 있는데, 셀카를 찍으면 사람들이 주로 예전에는 어디에 올렸죠?

Hyunwoo: I think a lot of people are like that, if other people take their picture it's awkward and they have to strike a pose, but if they take the pictures themselves, when no one's around, they can pretend that they're cute, that they're pretty, can't they? So I've come to understand that young female students (That's right.) female students or young women selca a lot. When they used to selca, for the most part, where did they upload their photos?

경은: 예전에는 “싸이월드”에 올렸죠.

Kyeong-eun: They used to upload them to Cyworld, of course.

현우: 네. “싸이월드”에 있는 그 “블로그”, 또는 미니홈피에 올렸는데, 그거 보면은 다들

Hyunwoo: Yeah. They uploaded them to their blog on Cyworld, or to Minihompy, and if you see them, they all

경은: 정말 다들 연예인 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Really they all look like celebrities.

현우: 예쁘게 나오고, 그리고 “싸이월드”가 사진 크기가 크지 않아요. 그래서 확대해서 보면 “어어... 이거 뭐야!” 이러는데, 작게 보면 다 예쁘죠.

Hyunwoo: They come out looking pretty, and Cyworld pictures aren't big. So if you magnify them, you say, “Huh?! My god!” but if you see them small like that they're all pretty, you know.

경은: 그리고 제가 생각할 때 셀카 찍는 이유는 다른 사람들이 사진 찍어 주면 제가 마음대로 지울 수가 없잖아요. 그런데 셀카를 찍으면 백 번 찍어서 제가 마음에 드는 거 한 장만 골라서 “싸이월드”에 올리면 되니까, 그러면 예쁜 사진만 딱 골라서 올릴 수 있잖아요. (네.) 그래서 여자들이 셀카를 좋아하는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: And when I think about it, the reason people selca, if other people take my picture for me, I can't erase them as much as I want, can I? But if I selca, after taking a hundred pictures, since it's okay if I choose the one single picture I like and upload it to Cyworld, so I can choose only the pretty picture and upload it, can't I? (Yeah.) So because of that, women like to selca, I think.

현우: 그런 것 같아요. 셀카를 보고 사람들이 찍어 놓은 셀카를 보고 “아, 이 사람은 이렇게 생겼구나.”라고 생각했는데, 실제로 만나 보면 아닌 경우들도 많죠?

Hyunwoo: It seems that way. Looking at selca pictures, looking at selca pictures that people had taken of themselves, a lot of times you think, “Ah, this person looks like this,” but when you really meet them, they look different, right?

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그게 뭐 나쁜 건 아니에요.

Hyunwoo: That's nothing bad.

경은: 나쁜 건 아니죠.

Kyeong-eun: Of course it's not a bad thing.

현우: 예쁜 모습을 간직하고 싶은 거니까. 한국 사람들은 셀카를 굉장히 많이 찍는데, 아마 제 생각에는 “싸이월드”도 사람들이 셀카를 많이 찍는 데 큰 원인이였던 게 아닌가.

Hyunwoo: Since it's that they want to look pretty. Koreans really selca a lot, but probably in my opinion, was Cyworld not a big reason that people selca a lot?

경은: 그럴 수도 있겠네요.

Kyeong-eun: Oh, that's possible, too.

현우: 올릴 곳이 없으면, 왜 찍어요?

Hyunwoo: If there's nowhere to upload them, why take the pictures?

경은: 맞아요. 자기 얼굴을 셀카 찍어서 보여 주고 싶으니까 올리겠죠?

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Don't they upload their selca pictures since they want to show them to other people?

현우: 맞아요. 그래서 올릴 곳이 있으니까 찍고.

Hyunwoo: That's right. So they take the pictures, since there's somewhere to upload them.

경은: 현우 씨는 셀카 찍어서 어디에다 올려요?

Kyeong-eun: Since you selca, where do you upload them?

현우: 저는 셀카 안 찍는다니까요! 근데 경은 씨, 제가 생각했을 때, 한국 사람들이 사진을 찍는 방식, 그러니까 인물 사진, 사람 사진을 찍는 방식하고 예를 들어서 미국 친구들이 인물 사진을 찍는 방식이 조금 다른 것 같은데.

Hyunwoo: I told you I don't selca! But Kyeong-eun, when I've thought about it, the method in which Koreans take pictures, portraits, the way in which they take pictures of people, and the way, for example, Americans take portraits, seem a little different.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 경은 씨도 느낀 거 있어요?

Hyunwoo: Have you felt that, too?

경은: 제가 여행 갔을 때, 느낀 거였는데요. 저는 주로 여행 가면 그래도 제 얼굴이 조금 알아보게 나올 수 있는 게 좋아요. 제가 거기 간 거잖아요. 그러니까 제 얼굴이 나왔으면 좋겠는데, 외국 친구들한테 “사진 좀 찍어 주세요.” 그러면 항상 저는 완전 조그맣게 거의 저인지 아닌지 알 수 없게 사진을 찍더라고요. (그래요?) 배경 중심으로.

Kyeong-eun: When I traveled, it was something I noticed. Usually when I travel, still I like when they turn out so you can recognize me a little. I went there, didn't I? So it would be nice if you can see my face, but if I ask my foreign friends to please take a picture for me, I think they always take pictures where I'm so incredibly small that you can barely tell if it's me or not.

현우: 저는 반대로 생각했어요. 사람마다 다른가 봐요. 저는 한국 사람들이 얼굴 크게 나오게 찍는 걸 거의 못 봤어요.

Hyunwoo: I think it's the opposite. I guess everyone's different. I've hardly ever seen pictures taken by Koreans where you can clearly see their face.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

현우: 왜냐하면 부담스럽고, 셀카는 자기 마음대로 할 수 있는데, 남이 얼굴 크게 나오게 찍어주면 되게 “안 예쁘다. 다시 찍어 달라.” 이런 까다로운 사람들이 많이 있더라고요. 근데 크게 뒤에 배경도 나오게끔 찍으면 얼굴이 안 예쁘게 나오거나, 이상하게 나올 확률이 적으니까 멀리 가서 찍어달라고 하는데, 한국 사람들은 자연스럽게 멀리 가서 찍는데 외국 사람들은 왜 그렇게 멀리 가느냐고 가까이서 여기 지금 서 있는 세 명만 나오게 찍어달라고 요구를 할 때가 있었어요.

Hyunwoo: Because it's burdensome, you can selca yourself how you want, but if people take your picture so that your face can be seen clearly, really, I believe there are a lot of people who are picky and say, “It's not pretty, please take another one.” But if you take a picture so the background behind them also comes out big, since the probability of their face not looking pretty or looking strange is small, they ask people to take the picture from far away, so Koreans naturally take pictures from far away, but there are times when foreigners ask why they go so far away, and request that they take a picture closer so it's only the three people standing here.

경은: 반대네요. 저는 미국을 안 가 봐서 그런가요.

Kyeong-eun: Wow, that's the opposite. Maybe it's like that since I haven't gone to America.

현우: 저도 안 가 봤지만. 그냥 제가 느낀 거는 그랬는데. 그러면 나라의 차이가 아니라 사람 차이인 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: But I haven't gone either. That's just what I've felt. So I think it's not a difference in countries but a difference in people.

경은: 근데 한국에서 셀카의 특징은 항상 V를 그린다는 거. 그게 특징이죠.

Kyeong-eun: But a special characteristic of selca in Korea is that we always make a V. That's an idiosyncrasy, of course.

현우: 뭘 승리했는지 모르겠지만. 그냥 브이 표시를 하죠. 그게 또 어색해서 그래요.

Hyunwoo: Although I don't know if we've been victorious in anything. We just make a V sign. That, too—since it's awkward, we do it.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 어떤 포즈를 취해야 할지 사람들이 아직 잘 모르고, 요즘에는 자연스럽게 포즈 취하시는 분들도 많고, 표정도 다양한 분들도 많은데 옛날에는 다 똑같은 포즈와 똑같은 표정으로 사진을 찍었죠.

Hyunwoo: People still don't know what kind of pose they have to do, and these days, there are a lot of people, too, who strike a pose naturally, and there are a lot of people who make various expressions, but they used to always take pictures with the exact same pose and the exact same expression, you know.

경은: 그리고 제가 생각할 때는 한국 사람들이 조금 더 딱딱한 것 같아요. 그래서 잘 못 웃어요.

Kyeong-eun: And when I think about it, Koreans seem a little stiffer. So they don't smile much.

현우: 맞아요.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

경은: 제 친구들 같은 경우에도 잘 못 웃더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: In my friends' case, too, I believe they don't smile much.

현우: 잘 못 웃는데, 귀여운 표정은 그래도 쉬운 건가요? 웃는 것보다? Hyunwoo: They don't, but is it easier even if they make a cute expression? Than smiling?

경은: 그런 것 같아요. 연습이 되면 되는 거니까.

Kyeong-eun: Seems that way. Since it works if you practice.
