현우: 네, 현정 씨. (네) 오랜만에 같이 이야기를 녹음하는데.
HyunWoo: So, HyunJeong. (Yes?) It's been a long time since we did our last recording together
현정: 그러게요.
HyunJeong: So it has.
현우: 네. 정말 오래됐죠. 잘 지내셨어요?
HyunWoo: Yeah. A really long time right? How have you been?
현정: 너무 잘 지냈는데.
HyunJeong: I've been really good
현우: 네.
HyunWoo: Good
현정: 현우 씨는 어땠어요?
HyunJeong: How about you?
현우: 저는 많이 바빴어요. 바빴지만, 잘 지내고 있어요. 오늘은 지난 번 시간에 이어서 무서운 이 야기에 대해서 조금 더 이야기를 해 볼 건데.
HyunWoo: I've been very busy. I was busy, but I'm doing well. Following on from the last time, today we will be talking more a bit more about scary stories.
현정: 경은 씨가 도망갔어요.
HyunJeong: GyeongEun ran away.
현우: 경은 씨하고 현정 씨하고 무서운 이야기를 하다가, 경은 씨가 자기는 “무서운 이야기를 들을 수 없다.” 라고 해서 도망간 거예요?
HyunWoo: You and GyeongEun were in the middle of talking about scary stories and she said "I can't listen anymore" and then ran away?
현정: 꿈에 나타난 데요.
HyunJeong: She said it would come out in her dreanms.
현우: 그래서 제가 지금 대신, 경은 씨 대신 왔군요.
HyunWoo: Ah, so that's why I'm here instead of her then.
현정: 네.
HyunJeong: Yes.
현우: 저도 사실은 무서운 이야기를 많이 알고 있지는 못해요. 사람들이 친구들하고 만나서 재미 로 하는 무서운 이야기는 잘 모르고, 그냥 제가 겪었던 일들 몇 가지 있어요.
HyunWoo: Actually to tell the truth I don't know many scary stories either. I don't really know the stories that friends tell each other for fun, I've just got a few experiences of my own.
현정: 오늘 무서운 이야기는 모두 있었던 일입니다.
HyunJeong: Today's scary story is something everyone has experienced.
현우: 그래요? 그리고 저는, 무서운 이야기를 하기 전에 일단 현정 씨가 무서워요.
HyunWoo: Really? And before we start with scary stories I'd just like to say that I find you scary.
현정: 왜요?
HyunJeong: Why?
현우: 그냥 무서워요. 그리고 사실은 경은 씨도 무서워요. 무서운 사람들하고 일하고 있어요.
HyunWoo: You're just scary. And honestly GyeongEun is too. I'm working with scary people.
현정: 현우 씨는 안 무서워요?
HyunJeong: And you're not scary?
현우: 저는 안 무섭죠. 저는 정말 착하고 사람들한테 친절하고, 아주....... 아무튼
HyunWoo: Of course I'm not scary. I'm really kind and friend to everyone........ anyway
현정: 이런 걸 한국에서는 (네) 착한 아이 콤플렉스라고 해요.
HyunJeong: In Korea we call that a 'kind child complex'
현우: 콤플렉스이기까지 해요?
HyunWoo: You'd go so far as I have a complex?
현정: 그럼요. 현우 씨는 경은 씨하고 저한테만 화내요.
HyunJeong: Totally. You only ever get angry at me and GyeongEun.
현우: 저희 리스너 여러분들은 그 말을 아마 안 믿으실 거 같고, 일단 바로 무서운 이야기로 들어가 보죠.
HyunWoo: I think our listeners won't believe that and now lets get started with the scary stories
현정: 네.
HyunJeong: Okay.
현우: 현정 씨는 그러면, 아까 저한테는 무서운 이야기를 조금 알고 있다고 했는데.
HyunWoo: Alright then, before you said to me that you knew some scary stories
현정: 네.
HyunJeong: Yes.
현우: 어떤 무서운 이야기를 알고 있어요?
HyunWoo: What stories to you know?
현정: 친구들이 무서운 이야기를 해달라고 하면, 크게 두 가지로 얘기를 하는 데요. 하나는 제가 중 학교 때, 중학교 3학년 때 친구가 갑자기 귀신을 봐서 한 달 동안 학교 수업을 할 수 없었어 요.
HyunJeong: When friends ask me to tell them them a scary story, there's two that I normally tell. The first is when I was in middle school, during my third year of middle school a friend of mine saw a ghost and then we weren't able to have class for a month.
현우: 친구가 귀신을 봐서, 학교 수업에 못 온 거예요? 아니면 학교 수업 전체를 못한 거예요?
HyunWoo: Because your friend saw a ghost, they couldn't come to class? Or everyone couldn't have to class?
현정: 우리 반 전체를 못하게 만들었어요.
HyunJeong: Everyone in the class couldn't.
현우: 그래요? 귀신을 봤어요? 직접?
HyunWoo: Really? They saw a ghost? Actually?
현정: 그러니까, 친구가 음악 시간이었는데, 갑자기 비명을 지르는 거예요.
HyunJeong: That's what I'm saying, during music time they just started screaming.
현우: 혼자? 어떻게 질렀어요?
HyunWoo: By themself? How did they scream?
현정: 꺄아!
HyunJeong: Ggyaaa!
현우: 그렇게?
HyunWoo: Like that?
현정: 하고 질렀는데 그때, 그 친구가 다른 곳에 있다가 전학을 온 친구였거든요.
HyunJeong: Yeah like that, that student was a transfer student from another place.
현우: 다른 학교에 있다가 우리 학교로.
HyunWoo: Transferred from a different school to your school
현정: 전학 와서 일 년이 지난 후였는데, 전학 온지 얼마 안 돼서 그 친구가 옛날 학교에서 정말 친 했던 친구가 교통사고로 죽었대요. 근데 전학을 오고 멀리 있으니까, 무덤에 찾아가지 않고, 장례식에도 안 갔었대요. 그러니까 일 년이 지나니까 찾아온 거예요. 같이 가자고.
HyunJeong: This happened a year after they transferred, but just after he transferred one of their very close friends from their old school died in a car accident. But because this student was far away on exchange, he didn't visit the grave, and didn't even go to the funeral. So then a year year the ghost came to find him. And say lets go together.
현우: 어디를 같이 가자고?
HyunWoo: Go where together?
현정: 당연히 자기가 죽었으니 죽은 곳으로 같이 가자고 그러겠죠?
Hyunjeong: Of course since they're dead to the place that they died right?
현우: 그게 언제였어요?
HyunWoo: When was this?
현정: 중학교 3학년 때,
HyunJeong: During my third year of middle school.
현우: 현정 씨가 16살 때. (그렇죠.) 그러니까 다시 정리를 해 보자면, 다른 학교에서 이 학교로 옮 긴 것을 전학이라고 하는데, 전학해 온 친구가 있었는데 그 친구가 귀신, 그러니까 유령 또는 ghost라고 하죠. 귀신을 본 거예요. (그렇죠) 음악 시간에. 그래서 그 귀신이 누군가 물어 봤 더니, 전에 다니던 학교에 다니던 친구였는데, 자동차 사고로 죽었어요. 근데 장례식에도 못 가고, 무덤에도 못 가니까 같이 가자고 따라온 거예요.
HyunWoo: When you were 16 years old? (Yeah.) So to summarise the story, moving from one school to another school is called an exchange, and there was a exchange student and that student saw a spirit, also called and apparition or ghost (Right) during music time. And so asking who the ghost was, it was a friend of the transfer student, who died in a car accident. But the student couldn't go to the funeral, or even visit the grave so the ghost came to find him so they could go together.
현정: 그래서, 납작한 벽 있잖아요. 칠판이나, 바닥에나, 천장, 벽에 딱 달라붙어 있는 모습으로 계 속 쫓아다니는 거예요. 그래서 친구가 너무 무서워해서, 집에도 못 가고, 사람이 적게 있으면, 자기가 정말 끌려갈까봐, 사람들 많이 있는 곳에 오는데, 소리 지르고 막 부들부들 떨고 하니 까 수업이 진행이 될 수 없어서. 한 달 동안.
HyunJeong: So, on flat surfaces; blackboards, floor, ceiling, walls the exchange student would always see the ghost following him. So they were so afraid they couldn't even go home, and when they were in a place with not many people they would be worried they'll get dragged away by the ghost. When they came to a place with lots of people they would scream and tremble in fear, so we couldn't make any progress in our class. For a whole month.
현우: 그럼 현정 씨도 공부를 안 했겠네요.
HyunWoo: So you didn't do any study either then?
현정: 그렇죠.
HyunJeong: That's right.
현우: 그 친구 때문에.
HyunWoo: Because of that exchange student.
현정: 근데, 그 때 제가 제일 무서운 걸 몰라서, 그 친구가 저한테 이렇게 딱 붙어가지고 계속 소리 지르고 있어서 귀가 아팠어요.
HyunJeong: But at the time I didn't know why they were afraid, and they would follow me around closely and scream so I found them annoying.
현우: 그게 왜 그런 줄 알아요. “이 친구라면 귀신이 와도 무서워서 도망가겠구나.”라고 생각한 거 예요.
HyunWoo: I know why they acted like that. They must have thought "If I'm HyunJeong, even if a ghost comes it'll be afraid and run away".
현정: 그렇지 않고, 제가 지켜줄 수 있다고 생각했기 때문이지 않을까요?
HyunJeong: I don't think so, It's probably because they thought I could look after them don't you think?
현우: 그게 그거죠. 똑같은 거죠.
HyunWoo: Yeah. That's the same thing.
현정: 뭔가 다른데.
HyunJeong: Seems a bit different to me
현우: 아무튼, 좀 무서운데요.
HyunWoo: Anyway, that's a bit scary.
현정: 그래서 처음에 선생님들이 한국은 중학교 3학년이 되면 고등학교로 올라가기 위해 시험을 보잖아요. 그 시험이 한두 달 정도 밖에 안 남은 때였거든요. 그 친구가 공부를 그렇게 잘 하 지 못했어요. 이 친구가 공부를 하기 싫어서 이렇게 쇼를 한다고.
HyunJeong: In the third year of middle school students need to sit a test in order to go into high school. This all happened when there was one or two months before the exam. And that student wasn't very studious. So the teachers thought he was putting on a show because he didn't want to study.
현우: 선생님들이 안 믿어 준 거예요?
HyunWoo: The teachers didn't believe the exchange student?
현정: 부모님도 안 믿으셨죠. 근데 그게 열흘이 지나가기 시작하니까, 선생님들도 뭔가 이상하다고 생각해서.
HyunJeong: Even his parents didn't believe him. but after ten days, even the teachers thought something was wrong.
현우: 현정 씨는 믿었어요?
HyunWoo: Did you believe them?
현정: 그렇죠. 사람이 떨고 있는데, 믿지 않을 리는 없잖아요.
HyunJeong: Of course. They were shaking, there's no way you can't believe them.
현우: 그 친구는 그렇게, 무서워서 도움을 요청하는데 다른 사람들이 안 믿어 주고.
현정: 그렇죠. 어른들이 믿어 주지 않아서.
현우: 정말 힘들었을 것 같아요. 귀신은 계속 따라오고. 현정 씨는 직접 귀신을 본 적 있어요?
현정: 본 적은 없고 당한 적은 있어요. 고등학교 때 야영 같은 걸 가잖아요. 그러면 담력 훈련이라 고 있는데, 무서운 걸 얼마나 견디느냐 하는 그런 훈련을 하는데요. 그 때 무덤이 큰 무덤가 에 가서, (왜 하필 무덤가에 갔어요?) 무서운 걸 얼마나 이기는지를 보는 거잖아요. 선생님들 이 무덤에 애들을 넣어 둔 거죠.
현우: 그래도 돼요?
현정: 그러면, 현우 씨는 담력 훈련할 때 어디서 했어요.
현우: 담력 훈련이란 걸 해 본 적이 없어요. 담력 훈련을 왜 해요?
현정: 아니, 아영 가면 12시쯤에, 밤 깜깜해지면 선생님들이 시키던데.
현우: 저는 광주에서 살았는데 (네) 광주가 서울하고도 또 다르고, 제주도 하고도 달라서 서울은 도
시잖아요. 제주도는 자연이 많고. (그렇죠) 근데 광주는 도시도 있고, 자연도 있었어요. 그래 서 저희 가족이 살고 있던 아파트 바로 옆에 대나무 숲이 있고, 조금만 벗어나면 숲이었기 때문에 매일매일 밤이 담력 훈련이었기 때문에, “따로 어디 가서 담력 훈련을 한다.”는 생각 은 전혀 해 보지 못했어요.
현정: 근데 학교에서 전체적으로 다 하는 거였어요. 그래서 무덤에 가면 벽이 있어서, 한 팀이 들 어가면, 다른 팀이 보이지 않아요. 그런데 여자 몇 명을 던져 놓고, 손전등을 딱 두 개만 줘 요. 그리고 종이 쪽지를 찾아 와라. 그러면 이제 잠을 자게 해 주겠다. 그래서 처음엔 여자애 들이 재밌으니까 막 웃으면서 돌아다니다가 한 시간이 지나도 찾을 수가 없는 거예요. 깜깜 하고 이제 지치고 여자애들이 막 울기 시작했어요. 근데, 저는 졸린 걸 정말 싫어하거든요? 그러니까, 졸린데 여자애들이 우니까 너무 귀찮아져서 여자애들하고 떨어져서 혼자 돌아다 니면서 손전등 없이 무덤을 뱅글뱅글 돌았어요. (네) 그리고 귀신한테 나 자야겠으니까, 빨리
