'''Adjective/Verb + 겠다''': This grammar pattern has several usages:

# In first-person statements, the ending -겠- expresses intention or will. In this meaning, it is mostly used with [[formal]] grammar patterns such as [[A/V + (스)ㅂ니다]] and not used commonly in informal speech. This pattern is also stronger than the future tense [[A/V + (으)ㄹ 거예요]], which is a simpler future tense, and expresses less intention than than -겠다.
# -겠다 can also convey supposition, a guess, a thought or observation. It can sometimes be translated as 'I think', 'I bet', 'I guess', 'It/this looks ~', 'It must be ~'. This pattern can not be used to express the thoughts or supposition (etc) of a second or third person and must express the thought of the person saying or writing it.
#When combined with [[A/V + (으)면]] and follow by 좋겠다, it can be used to express a wish or desire, see [[A/V + (으)면 좋겠다]]
#When combined with the honorific marker [[A/V + (으)시|시]] and the verb 주다, it is a polite way to request or ask for something or some action to be done. See [[V + 아/어 주시겠다]] or [[N + 주시겠다]].
# -겠다 can also be added to 알다 (to know) and 모르다 (to not know) to raise the politeness. 알겠어요/모르겠어요 are generally more polite than 알았어요/몰라요.
==Notes==
*For the past tense version of 겠다 (supposition meaning), see [[A/V + 았/었 + 겠다]]
'''Adjective/Verb + (으)니까 ''' : This pattern is equivalent to the phrase '''because of something'''. The clause that it is added onto is the cause, and the clause that follows it is the result. This phrase is especially used when the result is an imperative or a proposative (let's ...).
===Notes===
*In the other main usage of this ending, it serves as a temporal marker which also carries a sense of discovery of affirmation of what follows in the next clause.
*Korean tend to omit the 까 at the end, this makes it similar to the question ending '''Adjective/Verb + 니''' however, 니 will never add an 으 between the verb and itself (먹니? vs. 먹으니)
#Tell someone to try or attempt something and to see the result of doing so.

==Description==
'''Adjective/Verb + 았 / 었 + 어요''' : This pattern is used for past tense.
Note that the ending 어요 can be substituted with a different sentence ending or clause ending, such as 어, 습니다, 죠?, 으니까, etc. But there must be some ending; a word may not end with 았/었.

===Notes===
With adverbs such as 매일, 자주, 항상, etc, the sentence means 'past habit or repetition' rather than 'completion'.
==Conjugation Rule==
*If the last vowel in the verb before the ending is a [[yang vowel]] (아, 야, 오, 요, 애, 얘, 와, 외, or 왜): 았어요.
*If the last vowel in the verb before the ending is a [[yin vowel]] (어, 여, 우, 유, 에, 예, 워, 위, or 웨): 었어요.
*If the last vowel in the verb before the ending is a [[neutral vowel]] (으, 이, or 의): use the preceding vowel; if it is yang, then 았어요; if it is yin, then 었어요; if there are no non-neutral vowels, use 었어요.
*One exception: the verb 하다 (or any verb ending in 하다) becomes 했다 or 하였다 (했다 is the contracted form and much more common).

==Conjugation Examples==
*막다 → 막았다
*먹다 → 먹었다
*가다 → 갔다

==Description==
'''Noun + 이다''' : See the usages below:
#This is a special type of verb (copula) that links the subject of a sentence with a predicate (a subject complement or an adverbial). In English, this pattern would translate '''to be''', '''am''', '''is''', '''are''', '''being''', '''was''', '''were''', '''been'''.
#This is also used to connect nouns to certain grammar patterns that normally require a verb or adjective. For example [[A/V + 면]] normally requires an adjective or verb, but we put a noun + 이다 to make it compatible with the pattern.

===Notes===
*The opposite pattern is [[아니다]](to not be).
*There are no command or suggestion forms.
*Although mostly attached to nouns, noun like expressions can also be attached.

The '''A/V + 아/어/여''' form is probably the most important form to learn in Korean and is probably the most frequently used grammar pattern since it can be used as informal polite and informal friendly style amongst friends and people of equal or lower status (by dropping the 요 at the end). Also many other grammar patterns depend on the basic conjugation rules of this pattern to form other grammar patters, see [[:Category:아/어/여 form]] for other patterns.

<!--Can also be a command-->
==Usages==
This basic pattern is probably the most common grammar pattern in Korean.
#It is used for making informal present tense sentences, adding to the end 요 makes it become the informal polite form. This can be used to convey your thoughts, a fact or fact to someone else in the present tense. This can also be used for asking a question in the present tense. When asking a question your intonation should go up slightly.
#This pattern can also be used to issue a command (similar to [[V + 아/어 + 라]] but not as strong) or give a suggestion. It's best to combine the verb/adjective stem with the honorific suffix [[시]] to make it more polite. <!--is 라 a stronger command?-->
#When combined with the words 같이 or 함께 you are inviting or suggesting to the listener to do something together.

==Notes==
*Not adding a 요 is very informal and called [[반말]], which should only be used with friends, people that are younger than you, and people who are in a lower position than you. This is, however, dependent on the situation, and so may not always be true.
*To be more polite the honorific suffix [[시]] is added to the verb/adjective stem in many cases.

==Conjugation Rules==
There are three types of basic conjugation rules, the first two depend on whether or not a 오 or 아 verb appear in the last syllable of the adj/verb stem. The last rule is simply used for 하다 verbs. Please note that verbs/adjectives are put in the dictionary form (ending in -다, i.e. 가다), the stem is 가 (part without the 다).

===Verb/Adj Stem + 아===
*If the last syllable of the stem contains the vowels ㅗ or ㅏ, then 아 is added. If it is a stem with no [[받침]] like 가다, then an extra 아 isn't added.
*Please note '''this rule does not apply for 하다 verbs''', see the [[A/V + 아/어/여 + 요#여 Verbs/Adjectives (하다)|section below]] for 하다 adj/verbs.
*Stems that end in 오 are often contracted to 와 (오 + 아 = 와), especially in colloquial speech.
*Irregular verbs do exist, see the [[A/V + 아/어/여 + 요#Irregular Forms|irregular verbs section]] below for more details.
{| class="wikitable" style="text-align:center"
|}

===Verb/Adj Stem + 어===
*If the last syllable of the stem contains any vowel other than 오, 아, and is not a 하다 verb then it becomes an 어. Note that verb stems with 이 turn into a 여(see next section), it is due to a contraction of 이 + 어 = 여.
*If the last syllable of the stem contains the vowel 이 and there's no [[받침]], i.e. 시키다, then it becomes a 여 (시켜). The 여 is a result of the contraction between 이 + 어. The contracted form is almost always used in spoken and written Korean. Also note a seperate table of examples has been created below for the adj/verb stems which end in 이.
*Verbs that end in in the vowel ㅐ don't get anything conjugated to it, i.e. 내다 → 내요. <!-- anyone know the reason? -->
*Irregular verbs do exist, see the [[A/V + 아/어/여 + 요#Irregular Forms|irregular verbs section]] below for more details.
===여 Verbs/Adjectives (하다)===
*Any verb or adjective that ends in 하다 falls under this category.
*The 하 becomes 해 due to a contraction with 하 and 여.
*The contracted form is used most of the time, especially in colloquial speech. However, 하여 is used mostly in very formal situations.
;Sogang and Yonsei categories needed!
: We already have categories up for grammar patterns that appear in the Seoul National University program in the [[:Category:Grammar_Pattern|grammar pattern]] section. However we need current and former Sogang and Yonsei students to categorize grammar patterns for their respective text books. For example, if you see a grammar pattern that appeared in the level 1 book of the Sogang program, add '''<nowiki>[[Category:Sogang Level 1 Grammar]]</nowiki>''' or if there is a grammar pattern in Yonsei's level 3 grammar add '''<nowiki>[[Category:Yonsei Level 3 Grammar]]</nowiki>''' to the bottom of the particular grammar page (and so on). As an example here are the categories for SNU:
*[[:Category:SNU_Level 1 Grammar]]
*[[:Category:SNU_Level 2 Grammar]]
