First, great job! Didn't know it would be ready to roll out already on this wiki. I think in the future using the repeated speech form would be good too, i.e. "뭐라고?" "갈 거라고?" "공부했다고" etc

The problem is the cases are hard to detect because you have to know whether it's a verb or adjective and sometimes its both. For example 싸다 is a verb and adjective depending on the meaning. This form is also somewhat related to written form like 싸다 and 싼다.
--Bluesoju 07:06, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm impressed; you managed to cover at least a decent number of irregular forms, though it would obviously be pretty difficult to be comprehensive about that. I made a note about words with the adjective forming suffixes -스럽다, -답다 and -롭다 always being irregular, so that could help.
It would be nice if the past and present participles (for verbs - just the present participle for adjectives) were there - sometimes they're the hardest ones. Jjukumi 08:32, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
* 버리다: 버려 있다 (incorrect)/버려져 있다(correct)

I've tried some words but this application still doesn't seem to work perfectly though. (There may be much more words that do not match with each format.) Since it deals with words just automatically, it just changes the format without any consideration even when I try some words that don't exist in reality. But what's more important is some words of Korean can never be cunjugated as some specific forms.

Especially we can never make imperative sentences with adjectives but I can see this program still has some examples like 예뻐드리다, 예뻐주다, 예쁘세요(it can be used when it's a meaning of 예쁘십니다 or 예쁘시네요), 예쁘십시오, etc. To use 'to be pretty' as a verb, we rather use a verb, '예뻐지다', as a meaning of 'to become pretty', which can be cunjugated as 예뻐지기 위해서 (in order to become pretty), while '예쁘기 위해서' sounds quite strange. Because 예쁘다 is not a verb but an adjective in Korean grammar, it cannot be used like what verbs can be. Only when these words are combined with verbs, it would work.
* 예쁘다 + -어지다 = 예뻐지다
* 예쁘기 위해서 (incorrect), 예뻐지기 위해서 (correct)
* 파랗다 + -어지다 = 파래지다
* 파랗기 위해서 (incorrect), 파래지기 위해서 (correct)

So, I suggest it would be much better when this programme would be made individually for each verb section and adjective section.

Seconely, and some words have more than one meaning and each can be conjugated in a different way. For example:
* 걷다(to gather up): 걷어요, 걷고, 걷었다, etc
* 걷다(to walk): 걸어요, 걷고, 걸었다, etc
So, this needs to be considered as well.

And finally, on the explanation of each conjugation, -거든요 is not actually 'formal'. Putting -요 at the end of a verb is a way to show a kind of respect to the speaker, but the lowest way. (Actually foreigners always learn -요 at the first level, because it's the easiest way to show a bit of respect. However, it sometimes does sounds like a girly-speaking and appropriate in the formal places or situations).

Redesign
While it's fine now, I think in the future we should redesign the look of this application. At the beginning have it be able to choose all the modes in big blocks. Also the cell phone would be more than just a keypad, it would be imitating real Korean phones and the input would appear on the actual phone screen. It would be nice to have some professional graphics designers around. Any other thoughts? --Bluesoju 15:13, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

I agree, my plan is to keep version 1 the way it is and just focus on functionality. Once everything works the way it should, then I'll work on any visual changes in the next version. --Mstrum 15:52, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Hello Bluesoju, thank you for the kind words! I'm glad a lot of people have already worked for this project.

To shortly introduce myself, I'm a native Korean and interested in my own language Korean and studying other languages as well.
Since I am not used to dealing with Wiki tools, my edit would look very poor so anyone is always welcome to help me with that. I'll try to contribute my knowledge to this great project as much as I can. ;) Lune

Lune: I just added some extra examples that I think it would be helpful with this section but don't know where to put it.

Hanja is the Korean name for Chinese characters. More specifically, it refers to those Chinese characters borrowed from Chinese and incorporated into the Korean language with Korean pronunciation. Since a lot of Korean words are derived from Chinese, learning 한자 can be like learning prefixes, suffixes and root words. For Korean learners, learning the actual Chinese character isn't as important as learning the meaning and Korean pronunciation of the character. For example learning 驛 wouldn't be as useful as learning that the character is called '역' and means 'station.' Note that many characters can have the same pronunciation, but totally different meanings, i.e. 일(日 meaning sun) vs 일 (一 meaning one).

<!--
*Under construction
*Numbers
*Days of the week
-->
*Part 1: ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ
*Part 2: ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ
*Part 3: ㅊ ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅎ

<!--Table of contents should generate with h2 but it's not doing so, want a TOC for each hanja character-->
Please note: ― means there is no Hanja character for it, i.e. 동네 <洞―>. There is no Hanja character for 네, ― is not to be confused for 일 (一).

Please note 2: Some chinese characters have two ways to pronounce. For example, '女', whch means 'female' can be pronounced as both '여' and '녀' in Korean. But you can see, from the examples, 여 is only used when it comes as the first syllable of a word, while 녀 is only used in the middle of a word or at the end. This is a special grammatical rule called '두음법칙' or '머리소리 법칙', and North Korea doesn't accept this rule.

두음법칙 (Anyone can change this if this part looks unneccesary)
: In the first syllable of a word, ㄴ or ㄹ combined with a vowel such as ㅣ, ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅛ, ㅠ becomes ㅇ. However, when ㄹ is combined with a vowel such as ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅡ, ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅚ, it is changed into ㄴ. And this rule is only applied when the it comes to the first syllable.

For examples:
이빨 (teeth of animals, a humble form for '이')
사랑니 (a wisdom tooth)

역사歷史 (history)
이력서履歷書 (résumé)

노인老人 (someone who is old, senior)
연로年老 (aged and getting old)

Lune: /* Consonant Assimilation */

The 받침 is the final consonant (or consonant cluster) at the end of a Korean syllable. The 받침 is written in the bottom/final position. Conjugation rules will often depend on if there is a 받침 or not. The consonant in the 받침 position is said to be in the "final position."

The jamo (units that make up the Hangul alphabet) sound may also differ from it's original sound if not followed by a vowel.

<div style="text-align: center;">A sentence example where the 받침 is in red:</div>

Significance
The 받침 is important for grammar conjugation. Many grammar pattern's conjugation method depends on whether it has a 받침 or not, for example the subject markers 가(if there's no 받침) and 이(if there is a 받침).

<!--Insert table-->
Pronunciation: Consonant followed by a vowel
If a consonant in the final position is followed by a vowel, the consonant sound shifts over to the syllable with the vowel. The only sounds that don't shift over to the next syllable are ㅇ since it is impossible to begin a syllable with an "ng" sound and ㅎ becomes silent when followed by a vowel. Also when ㅌ is in the final position and followed by the vowel 이, the sound becomes 치, see ㅌ + 이. Similarly when ㄷ is in the final position and followed by the vowel 이, the sound becomes 지. See ㄷ + 이.
Pronunciation: Consonant not followed by a vowel
If a consonant is in the final position and it is not followed by a vowel (meaning it is the last syllable of the word or followed by another consonant), then it may have a different pronunciation. Notice from the table below that many characters share the same sound when in the 받침 position. Also note: ㅃ, ㄸ, and ㅉ can't appear in the final position.
Double 받침
It is possible to have two different consonants in the final syllable position (a consonant cluster). Note when we say double 받침 we are not refering to ㄲ, ㅆ. If the next syllable starts with a vowel, the sound in the second 받침 position will shift to the next syllable unless it is an ㅎ, in which case the sound is simply ignored. If the next syllable starts with a consonant, only one of the two 받침 consonants will be pronounced, but the second may assimilate with the following consonant.
However if it is followed by a consonant in the next syllable over, there is no specific rule as to which sound to pronounce; you must memorize the words individually. The second consonant in the 받침 can also affect the next syllable if one of the consonant assimilation rules applies. See the picture example.
Words like 닭(chicken) when followed by the subject marker 이 and the object marker 을 would normally have the pronunciation "달기" and "달글" respectively if they followed the normal rules. However they get pronounced as "다기" and "다글" instead.
