 경은: 네.

 현우: 뭐죠?
 Hyunwoo: What is it?

 경은: 드라마요.
 Kyeong-eun: Dramas.

 현우: 드라마.

 경은: 한국 드라마에 대해서 이야기해 봐요.
 Kyeong-eun: We are going to chat about Korean dramas.

 현우: 한국 드라마예요?
 Hyunwoo: Korean dramas?

 경은: 네. 한국 드라마에 대해서 이야기해야 돼요.
 Kyeong-eun: We should talk about Korean dramas.

 현우: 왜요?
 Hyunwoo: Why?

 경은: 왜냐면, 한국어를 공부하시는 분들이니까 한국 드라마를 많이 보잖아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Because, they are people studying Korean, so they watch a lot of Korean dramas.

 현우: 여기서 제가 질문을 하나 하고 싶은데, 여러분에게, 여러분 들으면서 코멘트 남겨 주세요. 드라마 많이 보세요? 한국 드라마 많이 보세요?
 Hyunwoo: I want to ask a question to everyone, and please respond with a comment. Do you watch a lot of dramas? Do you watch a lot of Korean dramas?

 경은: 여러분 한국 드라마 많이 보세요? 제가 알기로는 많이 보는 것 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Do you guys watch many dramas? As far as I know I think you guys watch a lot of dramas.
 제가 알기로는=as far as I know.

 현우: 네. 최소한 저보다는 많이 보시는 것 같은데, 저는 일단 텔레비전을 거의 안 봐서, 드라마를 잘 몰라요.
 Hyunwoo: Yea, I think they at least watch more than I do. I barely even watch T.V., so of course I don’t know much about dramas.
 일단=first of all, for starters,

 경은: 그렇죠.
 Kyeong-eun: I know.

 현우: 그런데 제가 엊그저께 택시를 타고 어딘가를 가고 있었는데, 택시 안에 텔레비전이 있더라고요.
 Hyunwoo: Yea but a few days ago I was taking a taxi somewhere, and in the taxi there was a television.
 엊그저께= a few days ago
 더라고=found that

 경은: 요즘에는 택시 안에 텔레비전이 많이 있죠.
 Kyeong-eun: These days a lot of taxis have TVs in them.

 현우: 승객이 앉을 수 있는 뒷부분에도 있지만, 기사분이 보고 계시는 텔레비전이 있더라고요. 근데 그 텔레비전에서 어떤 드라마를 하고 있었어요.
 Hyunwoo: There was a TV for when the customers sit in the back, but there was also a TV for the driver to watch. And there was some kind of TV drama on the TV.
 더라고요= is used for when you discovered something.

 경은: 뭐였어요?
 Kyeong-eun: What was it?

 현우: 잘 모르겠는데, “시크릿 가든”인가?
 Hyunwoo: I don’t know, “Secret Garden”?

 경은: “시크릿 가든”이요? 저 너무 좋아해요.
 Kyeong-eun: It was “Secret Garden?” I really like that show.

 현우: 그 드라마를 하고 있었고, 그 드라마에서 그 “김주원”이라는 사람이 병원에서 옛날로 돌아가서 아무튼 기억이 지워지고 (네) 뭐 그런 내용을 (맞아요.) 하고 있었어요.
 Hyunwoo: So that drama was on, and in it some guy named “Kim Joowon” was in the hospital, and it went into his past and he lost all his memories, and a, it was that kind of stuff.

 그래서 보면서 “정말 유치하다. 어떻게 저럴 수 있나! 비현실적이다.” 이런 생각을 했어요.
 So while I was watching I thought “This is so childish. How could that possibly happen? This is really unrealistic”

 경은: 네. 근데 비현실적이기 때문에 사람들이 좋아하는 거죠. 현실이랑 너무 똑같으면 볼 필요가 없잖아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea, but people like it because it isn’t realistic. If it is too close to reality, there is nothing you need to see.

 현우: 근데 비현실적인 걸 떠나서 일단 드라마를 보는데, 제가 택시를 타고 10분 정도 갔어요. 10분 동안 택시타고 가는 동안에 배우들이 네 명 정도 나온 것 같아요. 그런데 그 네 명의 배우들이 연기를 잘 못하는 거예요.
 Hyunwoo: First of all the TV drama had departed from reality, and I was in the taxi for 10 minutes. And during my 10 minutes in the taxi, I think I saw four different actors on the show. And all four of the sucked at acting.

 경은: 정말요?
 Kyeong-eun: Really?

 현우: 하지원 씨는 정말 잘해요.
 Hyunwoo: Ha Jiwon did well.

 경은: 현빈 씨도 연기 정말 잘하죠.
 Kyeong-eun: Hyunbin also acts really well.

 현우: 근데 현빈 씨가 제일 어색하더라고요. 제가 보기에는.
 Hyunwoo: Actually Hyunbin was the most awkward. In my eyes.

 경은: 그게 왜 그런지 알아요?
 Kyeong-eun: Do you know why?

 현우: 왜요?
 Hyunwoo: Why?

 경은: 처음부터 안 봐서 그래요.
 Kyeong-eun: Because you didn’t watch it from the start.

 현우: 그래요?
 Hyunwoo: Is that so?

 경은: 그 내용을 다 이해를 하면 현빈 씨가 얼마나 연기를 잘 하는 지 알 수 있을 거예요. 왜냐하면 요즘에 연기 잘한다고 정말 극찬을 받고 있어요.
 Kyeong-eun: If you understood everything, you would know how great Hyunbin is at acting. These days because he is receiving a lot of praise because of his good acting.

 현우: 정말요? 극찬까지?
 Hyunwoo: Really? People would praise his acting?

 경은: 네. 극찬.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. They praise his acting.

 현우: 칭찬을 많이 받고 있다는 얘기죠?
 Hyunwoo: Your saying he gets a lot of compliments?

 경은: 네. 칭찬을 많이 받고 있다는 이야기죠.
 Kyeong-eun: I am saying he gets a lot of compliments.

 현우: 예 그러면 제가 지금 “시크릿 가든” 이야기를 하면 경은 씨가 집중을 못하니까 다른 이야기를 잠깐 이야기 주제를 바꿀게요.
 Hyunwoo: Yea well it says like now because we are talking about “Secret Garden” you can’t concentrate, so let’s talk about something else for a bit and change the subject.

 경은: 한국 드라마 전체에 대해서 이야기를 하는 게 나을 것 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Ok, I think we should talk about Korean dramas in general.

 현우: 경은 씨는 언제부터 드라마 봤어요?
 Hyunwoo: When did you start watching dramas?

 경은: 어렸을 때부터 봤죠. 질문이 너무 이상한 거 알아요?
 Kyeong-eun: Since I was little. You know your question is really weird right?

 현우: 저는 드라마를 어렸을 때는 안 보고, 중학교 때부터 봤거든요? 중학교 때 시간은 많이 있고...
 Hyunwoo: I didn’t watch dramas when I was little, I guess I watch them from junior high? I had a lot of time in junior high…

 경은: 저도 그랬겠죠? 초등학교 때는 안 봤겠죠. 엄마가 보지 말라고 했을 거예요.
 Kyeong-eun: Of course I’m the say way aren’t I? I didn’t watch them in elementary school. Because my mother didn’t let me.

 현우: 근데 경은 씨, 한국에는 드라마가 굉장히 많잖아요.
 Hyunwoo: But in Korean there are an extremely large number of TV dramas aren’t there.

 경은: 정말 많죠. 매일 매일 드라마 해요.
 Kyeong-eun: A huge amount. There are dramas on every single day.

 현우: 월요일하고 화요일에는 월화 드라마, 그리고 수요일하고 목요일에는 수목 드라마, 그 다음에 토요일 일요일에는 주말 드라마. 금요일에는 뭐하죠?
 Hyunwoo: On Mondays, and Tuesdays there are the Monday-Tuesday dramas, and on Wednesday and Thursday there are the Wednesday-Thursday dramas, and on Saturday and Sunday there are the weekend TV dramas. So what happens on Fridays?

 경은: 금요일도 아마 특집 드라마 이런 거 할 거예요.
 Kyeong-eun: I think there are feature dramas on Friday too.

 현우: 짧은 거.
 Hyunwoo: Short ones.

 경은: 네. 아니면 월요일부터 금요일까지 매일 매일하는 드라마가 있어요. 또.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. Or there are dramas that run from Monday to Friday. Also.

 현우: 일일 드라마.
 Hyunwoo: One day dramas.

 경은: 네. 일일 드라마.
 Kyeong-eun: One day dramas.

 현우: 네.
 Hyunwoo: Yea.

 경은: 그런 드라마도 있고요.
 Kyeong-eun: There is that kind of TV drama to.

 현우: 또 그런 드라마들은 주로 밤에 하는데 아침에 이제 학생들이 학교에 가고 남편이나 아내가 회사가 나간 다음에 집에 남은 사람들은 주부의 경우에는 특히나 엄마나 아빠들 중에서 집에서 일을 하시거나 아니면 대학생들 중에서 방학인 사람들은 아침에 아침 드라마를 보죠.
 Hyunwoo: But also usually that kind of drama is on at night, or in the morning. These days it is either, when children are at school, or after the husbands go to work, that house wives get a chance to watch dramas. Particularly, for my mother and father when they work at home, or for university students when they are on break, it is easy to watch the morning dramas.

 경은: 맞아요. 아침 드라마를 해요.
 Kyeong-eun: That’s right, they watch morning dramas.

 현우: 아침 한 10시?
 Hyunwoo: I guess at 10 o clock?

 경은: 10시 정도.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea, then can be on at 10.

 현우: 아침 드라마를 보는데, 제가 느끼기에는 밤에 하는 드라마보다 아침에 하는 드라마가 더 비현실적이에요.
 Hyunwoo: I’ve seen morning dramas, and in my opinion the morning dramas are more unrealistic than the night ones.

 경은: 불륜이 정말 많죠.
 Kyeong-eun: Those ones involve a lot of affairs.

 현우: 맞아요.
 Hyunwoo: Yea I know.

 경은: 아침 드라마는 특히 불륜이 많아요. 이상한 것 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun: The morning dramas especially contain a lot of affairs. I think it is kind of weird.

 현우: 불륜도 많고, 아픈 것도 굉장히 많고.
 Hyunwoo: there are a lot of affairs and so many people getting hurt.

 경은: 보통 재미있게 말을 하려고, 사람들이 막장 드라마라고 하는데, 아침 드라마에는 진짜 막장 드라마가 많은 것 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Normally just to be funny, people call them mad(crazy) dramas, because the morning dramas seem really absurd.

 현우: 왜 그럴까 생각을 해 봤는데, 일단 제작비가 적잖아요.
 Hyunwoo: When I think of why they are like that the first reason that comes to mind is because they need to have low production costs.

 “아침 드라마는 보는 사람들이 저녁에 하는 드라마보다 적다 보니까 제작비가 아무래도 적을 거고, 제작비가 적은데 재미있는 이야기를 만들어 내려면, 일상의 소재를 가지고 하기 보다는 조금 더 비틀어진 과장된 이야기를 써야하지 않을까” 하는 생각을 해 봤고요,
 They think “Because less people watch the morning dramas than the night dramas, no matter how cheaply we produce it, we have interesting dialogue, and instead of everyday content we should have incredibly twisted over exaggerated dialogue.”

 그런데 그렇게 막장 드라마들이 아침에 많이 방송되다 보니까 저희 엄마들이 어머니들이 그 드라마를 보고 (맞아요) “다른 사람들은 저렇게 사나 보다.” 라고 생각하실까 봐 저는 걱정이에요.
 And because there are so many crazy dramas like that being broadcast, I’m worried that mother and fathers will see those and thing “Other people live like that.”

 경은: 저도 조금 그러기는 해요. 아침 드라마 저는 가끔 보는데, 시간 날 때가 있어서 가끔 보는데 정말 이상해요. 정말 모든 사람들이 다 불륜이고, 다 아프기도 하고, 뭐랄까 배신하고 (복수하고) 복수하고 이러니까 “한국 사람들은 다 이러고 사나?” 생각이 들기도 하더라고요. 정말.
 Kyeong-eun: I’m a bit like that too. Sometimes when I watch morning dramas because I have some spare time, I watch it and think it is really weird. It really seems like it is in fashion for everyone to have affairs and hurt each other, (they are just copying each other) They copy each other and some of them wonder “Do all Korean people live like this?”

 현우: 드라마 재미있는데, 그런 안 좋은 쪽에 영향보다는 좋은 쪽으로 영향을 줄 수 있는 드라마가 많이 생겼으면 좋겠어요.
 Hyunwoo: The dramas are interesting but, I think it would be nice if there would be more dramas that could have a positive influence on people, than the ones that have a negative one.

 경은: 근데 그런 얘기들을 하더라고요, 아침 드라마가 막장 드라마라는 것도 알고, 그 내용이 정말 말도 안 된다는 것도 알면서도 중독이 된대요. 한 번 보기 시작하면 중독된다고 하더라고요.
 Kyeong-eun: I have heard some people say that before, I know the morning dramas seem pretty absurd, and even though it is about stuff that couldn’t actually happen, you can still get addicted. You can get addicted even if you just watch one.

 현우: 그리고 아침드라마에 나오는 배우들은 주로 아침 드라마에 많이 나와요. 그래서 연기도 굉장히 잘하고, 그리고 지난번에 나왔던 배우들을 이번 드라마에 또 볼 수 있고요. 가끔씩 헷갈려요. 이 사람에서는 지난 드라마에서는 엄마였는데, 이번에는 딸이고.
 Hyunwoo: And the actors you see in the morning dramas, are in a lot of the morning dramas.

 경은: 근데 현우 씨는 안 보잖아요.
 Kyeong-eun: But you don’t even watch them.

 현우: 저는 예전에 본 적이 있어요. (그래요?) 예전에 중학생 때, 고등학생 때, 방학이거나 하면 학교에 안 가잖아요. 방학하고 관계 없이 아침 드라마는 하잖아요.
 Hyunwoo: I used to watch them. (Is that so?) When I was in middle school and high school, I didn’t go to school during the breaks. But the drama scheduling didn’t have an relation to when school breaks were.

 그리고 군대 갔을 때도 병원에 입원한 적이 있는데 한 달 정도? 그 때 군인 들은 너무 재미있는 게 없다 보니까 그런 드라마가 너무 좋은 거예요. 그래서 아침부터 드라마를 보고 있었죠. 병원에서. 평상시에 군대에서는 못 보고요. 지금도 안 보는데 제 기억으로는 그랬던 것 같아요.
 And when I was in the army, I got admitted to the hospital or one month I think it was? And it looked like none of the soldiers and anything fun to while they were in there, so the dramas seemed really good. So I started watching dramas every morning in the hospital. We couldn’t watch dramas in everyday army life. I still don’t watch them now but that is how I remember them.

 경은: 그럼 저녁 때 하는 드라마는 그래도 좀 괜찮은 것 같지 않아요?
 Kyeong-eun: Then don’t you think the dinner (time) dramas are ok?

 현우: 저녁 때 하는 드라마는 요즘에는 안 봐서 모르겠는데, 시크릿 가든 같은 경우에도 트위터에서 사람들이 계속 이야기를 하는 거예요.
 Hyunwoo: I don’t watch dramas at dinner time these days so I don’t really know but, I saw Secret Garden and continuously talk about dramas on Twitter.

 경은: 근데 물론 시크릿 가든 같은 경우도 사실은 조금 뻔한 이야기라고 해요.
 Kyeong-eun: Ok but obviously you have clearly said your experience with Secret Garden.

 재벌이 나와서 신데렐라처럼 가난한 여자를 구제해 주는 구해 주는 그런 내용이거든요. 근데 조금 특이한 게 있다면 몸이 바뀐다는 거? 그리고 보통 그렇게 몸이 바뀌면 딱 한 번밖에 안 바뀌어요. 그런데 얘네들은 계속 바뀌거든요.
 There are some shows where there is some poor Cinderella type girl, where a big Korean corporations finds her and gives her help. If there is something special about her they change her body right? And usually they only have to change it once. But people actually have to constantly change their bodies.

 현우: 저는 그 점이 그 드라마에서 제일 맘에 안 들어요. 말도 안 되는.
 Hyunwoo: That is what I dislike most about that kind of drama. It’s non sense.

 경은: 너무 말이 안 되는데, 재미있어요.
 Kyeong-eun: it is fun because it doesn’t make sense.

 현우: 말이 안 되니까 재미있을 수도 있겠죠?
 Hyunwoo: It can be fun because it doesn’t make any sense?

 경은: 맞아요. 그리고 그 남자 주인공이 멋있으니까.
 Kyeong-eun: That’s right. And the lead male actor is really awesome.

 현우: 그것도 잘 모르겠어요. 저는 솔직히 경은 씨나, 석진 씨가 연기를 더 잘한다고 생각해요.
 Hyunwoo: I don’t know about that. Honestly I think you or Soekjin act way better.

 경은: 정말.
 Kyeong-eun: Really.

 현우: 저희 청취자 여러분도 그렇게 생각하실 거예요.
 Hyunwoo: I think our listeners think that way to.

 경은: 큰일 나겠는데요?
 Kyeong-eun: Are you being serious?

 현우: 여러분 어떻게 생각하세요?
 Hyunwoo: What do you think everyone?

 경은: 한국 사람들이 방송을 안 들었으면 좋겠어요.
 Kyeong-eun: I hope Koreans don’t listen to this.

 현우: 저희가 드라마에 대해서 이야기를 해 봤는데. 저는 드라마를 평소에 안 보니까 좋아하는 드라마가 없어요. 그런데 경은 씨는 좋아하는 드라마가 많이 있겠죠? 그리고 제 생각에는 저희 청취자 여러분들도 드라마 좋아하는 게 굉장히 많을 것 같아요.
 Hyunwoo: Today we talked about dramas. And I don’t normally watch dramas because there aren’t any that I like. But Kyeong-eun likes a lot of dramas I think. And I think our listeners like a lots of dramas.

 경은: 네. 정말요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. I agree.

 현우: 어떤 드라마를 좋아하시는지 저희한테 알려주세요.
 Hyunwoo: Please tell us what kind of dramas you all like.

 경은: 저희한테 이야기 해 주세요.

 경은: 한국 드라마랑 여러분들이 살고 있는 나라의 드라마랑 어떻게 다른지 그런 이야기를 해주셔도 재미있을 것 같아요. 정말 다를 것 같거든요.
 Kyeong-eun: I think if everyone says how Korean dramas are different from the dramas in the countries they are currently living in it will be fun. I think they will be really different.

 현우: 굉장히 다를 것 같아요. 사실 한국 사람들도 외국 드라마 많이 봐요. 근데 주로 일본 드라마하고 미국 드라마를 보기 때문에 일본 드라마하고 미국 드라마 이외에는 잘 모르는 것 같아요.
 Hyunwoo: I think they will be really different. Actually Koreans watch a lot of foreign dramas to. Because they watch mostly Japanese dramas and American dramas, I don’t think we really know much about foreign dramas besides Japanese and American ones.

 경은: 저도 미국 드라마, 일본 드라마는 보는데, 다른 드라마들은 전혀 모르기 때문에. (좀 알려주세요.) 네. 궁금해요.
 Kyeong-eun: I also watch American and Japanese dramas, but don’t know anything about other dramas. (please tell us.) Yea. I’m curious.

 현우: 경은 씨 놀이터에 자주 오세요?
 Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun do you come to the playground often?

 경은: 저요? (네) 어른이 되고 나서도 저는 가끔 와요. Me? (Yea) Since becoming an adult I go sometimes.
 Kyeong-eun:

 현우: 아 그래요? 왜요?
 Hyunwoo: Ah really? Why?

 경은: 왜냐하면 저는 그네를 너무 좋아해서, 사실 스트레스를 받거나 이럴 때 (네) 그네 타면 스트레스가 금방 풀리더라구요.
 Kyeong-eun: Because I really like the swing. Actually when I am stressed (Yea) If I ride the swing I found I can get rid of my stress quickly.

 현우: 아 그래요?
 Hyunwoo: Ah really?

 경은: 네, 그래서 그네 타러 자주 와요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea, so I often come to ride the swing.

 현우: 맞아요. 경은 씨가 혼자 그네 타고 있는 모습을 보면, 정말 스트레스 받았을 것 같을 것 같아요. (네) 말이 복잡하죠?
 Hyunwoo: Right. I think if I saw Kyeong-eun riding the swing by herself, she would look very stressed.

 경은: 너무 어려운데요.
 Kyeong-eun: It is so difficult…

 현우: 그런데 (네) 경은 씨 (네) 꼭 그네는 어린이들을 위한 것은 아니지만, (네) 어른들도 놀 수 있지만, (네) 원래는 어린이들이 놀 수 있는 곳이죠?
 Hyunwoo: But (yea) Kyeong-eun (Yea) the swing isn’t just for children, (Yea) and adults can play on it to but, (Yea) originally it is something for made for kids to play on isn’t it?

 경은: 그럼요 원래는 어린이들이 놀게 하기 위해서 만든 곳이죠.
 Kyeong-eun: That’s right. Originally it was made for children to play on.

 현우: 네, 맞아요.
 Hyunwoo: Yea you’re right.

 경은: 그래서 제가 갈 때마다 항상 어린이들이 있나 없나 살펴보고 없을 때만 가서 그네를 타요.
 Kyeong-eun: So every time I go, I always check if there are any children, and if there aren’t any I ride the swing.

 현우: 어린 아이가 그네를 타고 있는데, 그네 뺏어서 타는 건 아니구요?
 Hyunwoo: Even if there are kids or toddlers ridding the swing, don’t you just take it away and rid the swing anyway?

 경은: 저는 현우 씨랑 달라요. 그러지 않아요.
 Kyeong-eun: I’m different from you. I don’t do that.

 현우: 네, 좋아요. 그러면 지금도 경은 씨는 가끔씩 놀이터에 가시는데 (네) 어렸을 때는 어땠어요? 어렸을 때도 자주 갔었어요?
 Hyunwoo: Ahh good. So now, you just go to the part sometimes (Yea) but how about when you were a child? Did you go often as a child too?

 경은: 어렸을 때는 정말 자주 갔죠. 저는 언니도 있고 남동생도 있거든요? (네) 그래서 저희 셋이서 꼭 놀이터 가서 늦게까지 놀다가 엄마한테 혼나기도 하고 그랬어요.
 Kyeong-eun: When I was I child I went really frequently. I have an older sister and a younger brother. (Yea) So the three of us always went to the park, and played late. And then our mother would get scold us.

 현우: 그래요? 저는 어렸을 때 놀이터가 집 근처에 있었는데, (네) 놀이터에 가면, 좀 싫었어요.
 Hyunwoo: Oh. When I was a kid there was a playground near my house, (Yea) but I didn’t really like going to there.

 경은: 왜요?
 Kyeong-eun: Why?

 현우: 뭐 제가 안 좋아하는 친구들도 있었고,
 Hyunwoo: Well, I there were some ‘friends’ I didn’t really like,

 경은: 아, 어렸을 때 맨날 맞았어요?
 Kyeong-eun: Did they beat you everyday when you were a child?

 현우: 그건 아니고,
 Hyunwoo: They didn’t do that.

 경은: 아, 그래요?
 Kyeong-eun: Ah, then what?

 현우: 제가 좋아하는 친구들,
 Hyunwoo: The friends that I did like,

 경은: 네.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.
 현우: 제가 같이 자주 어울려서 놀았던 친구들은 주로 놀이터 말고 놀이터 뒤에 있던 그 잔디밭?
 Hyunwoo: The friends I got along well with and hung out with a lot mostly played on the grass behind the park rather than on the actual park.

 경은: 잔디밭이요?
 Kyeong-eun: On the Grass?

 현우: 네, 잔디밭에서 야구를 하거나, (아), 뭐 축구를 하거나,
 Hyunwoo: Yea, we played baseball or, (ah) um soccer on the grass,

 경은: 그래요?
 Kyeong-eun: Oh really?

 현우: 네, 그렇게 공놀이를 하고 놀았어요. (아) 그래서 놀이터를 어렸을 때는 별로 안 좋아 했는데.
 Hyunwoo: Yea, we played that kind of ball sports. (ahh) so when I was little I didn’t really like the playground.

 경은: 네.
 Kyeong-eun: Oh.

 현우: 그래도 지금은 저도 가끔 가요.
 Hyunwoo: But now I also go sometimes.

 경은: 아, 그래요? 가서 뭐해요?
 Kyeong-eun: Ah, really? When you go what do you do?

 현우: 학교 놀이터 같은 경우는 철봉이 있잖아요.
 Hyunwoo: When it’s a school style playground there are of course chin-up bars.

 경은: 아, 네, 네.
 Kyeong-eun: Ah, right, right.

 현우: 그래서 철봉도 하고 그리고 그네는 잘 안 타지만. 그냥 잠깐 전화통화 할 때, (네) 아니면 잠깐 바람 쐬고 싶을 때, (네) 가서 있으면 공원 같잖아요.
 Hyunwoo: So I do chin-ups but I don’t really use the swing much. Just when I make a short phone call, (Yea) or when I want get some fresh air, (Yea) I can go there and it is like a park.

 경은: 맞아요.
 Kyeong-eun: That’s right.

 현우: 약간.
 Hyunwoo: A little bit.

 경은: 서울에 별로 공원이 없어서, (네) 놀이터가 공원 대신 역할을 해 주는 것 같아요, 저는.
 Kyeong-eun: There aren’t many parks in Seoul (Yea) so instead of a actually parks, I think the playgrounds can act as parks.

 현우: 맞아요. 맞아요. 서울에서 공원 찾기가 정말 힘든데, (네) 경은 씨도 해외 여행을 많이 해 봐서 알겠지만, (네) 다른 나라에 가면 가끔씩 걷다 보면 공원을 발견할 때가 있는데.
 Hyunwoo: Right. Right. Finding a park in Seoul in really hard, (Yea) You have gone on many trips abroad so you already know this but, (Yea) when you go to other countries sometimes you can just walk and discover a park.

 경은: 네
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.

 현우: 서울은 무슨무슨 “대공원” (네) 아니면 “한강 공원”,
 Hyunwoo: But in Seoul, it is Something Something “Grand Park”, or “Han River Park”

 경은: 맞아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.

 현우: 이렇게 큰 공원에 가지 않으면 작은 공원을 찾기가 힘들어요.
 Hyunwoo: If you’re not going to a big park like this, finding a small one is difficult.

// 경은: 주말에 일부러 시간을 내서 한강공원이나 서울대공원이나 이런 큰 곳을 가지 않는 이상. 정말 보기 힘들어요.
// Kyeong-eun: On the weekend when you are looking to spend time, going to Han River Park, or Seoul Grand Park, or that kind of big place isn’t ideal.

// 현우: 맞아요. 그래서 도로도 아니고, (네) 카페도 아니고, (맞아요) 집도 아닌 어떤 곳에 가고 싶으면 놀이터가 눈에 많이 보여요.
// Hyunwoo: Yea. So if you want to go to some place with no roads, (yea) no cafes, (right) and no houses

 현우: 그리고 요즘에는 아파트에 가면 (네) 아파트 단지에 가면 항상 놀이터가 하나씩은 있어요.
 Hyunwoo: And these days when you go to an apartment (Yea) When you go to the apartment block, there is always one playground.

 경은: 네.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.

 현우: 그래서 친구 집에 가서나 친척 집에 갔을 때, 그냥 잠깐 어딘가에서 누군가를 기다려야 한다, (네) 그러면 자연스럽게 놀이터에 가서 기다릴 때가 있는 것 같아요.
 Hyunwoo: So when I go to a friend’s house or I go to a relative’s house and I’m just waiting for somewhere for someone, (Yea) then I think, naturally I to a playground to wait.

 경은: 뭐, 산책하고 싶은데 걷다 보면 차들만 있고 막 건물들만 있고 그러면 싫잖아요?
 Kyeong-eun: Why? Is it because when you want to go for a walk, if you walk and look around, you hate just seeing cars and buildings?

 현우: 네.
 Hyunwoo: Yea.

 경은: 근데 그나마 놀이터는 나무도 있고, 그네도 있고 (네) 그러니까 좋은 거 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun: At playgrounds there are trees, and swings (Yea) so it seems like a pretty good place.

 현우: 그럼 경은 씨 (네) 어렸을 때 그리고 지금 (네) 놀이터에 가면 (네) 어떤 놀이 기구들이 있는지 한번 이야기 해 주시겠어요?
 Hyunwoo: Then Kyeong-eun (Yea) when you were little, and even now (Yea) when you are at the playground (Yea) can you tell us what kind of rides are there?

 경은: 네, 좋아요. 그러면 제가 아까부터 계속 말한 그네가 있죠.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea sure. There is the swing, which I have been continuously mentioning since a little while ago.

 현우: 네, 그네를 한번 설명해 볼까요? (어허허) 그네.

 현우: 영어로는 swing이라고 하죠? (어떻게 설명해요?)
 Hyunwoo: In English it’s swing right? (how can I explain it?)

 현우: 그래서 설명하자면 저는 할 수 있을 것 같은데요.
 Hyunwoo: Well if we are going to explain it, I think I can do it.

 현우: 기둥에 (네) 줄이 매달려 있고,
 Hyunwoo: On poles (Yea) there are ropes hanging and

 경은: 줄?
 Kyeong-eun: ropes?

 현우: 네. 줄 두 개가 매달려 있고, (네) 줄 사이에 앉을 수 있는 곳이 있어요. (네) 그래서 거기에 앉아서 앞으로 뒤로 왔다가 갔다가 하는 거죠.
 Hyunwoo: Yea. There are to ropes hanging and (Yea) in between the ropes there is a place for you to sit. (Yea) So you it is something you sit on and then go back and forth on.

 경은: 근데 그네를 설명할 필요는 없을 것 같아요. 다 아니까요 (네, 맞아요).
 Kyeong-eun: But I don’t think that need an explanation of what a swing is, because they all already know. (Yea, you’re right.)

 현우: 네, 죄송합니다. 그럼 다른 것도 설명하지 말까요?
 Hyunwoo: Yea Sorry. Then we won’t explain other things?

 경은: 다른 거 설명을 하지 않구요. (네) 그냥 뭐가 있는지 그런 것만 얘기하면 될 것 같아요.

 경은: 시소가 있죠.

 현우: 저는 어렸을 때는 많이 탔어요.
 Hyunwoo: I played on it a lot when I was a kid.

 경은: 아, 그래요?
 Kyeong-eun: A really?

 현우: 네. 그리고 저는 여동생이 두 명이 있으니까. (네) 여동생이 둘이서 같이 반대쪽에 타면 (아) 저하고 몸무게가 비슷한 거에요.
 Hyunwoo: Yea. So I have two younger sisters. (yea) so though two of them would sit on the opposite side (ahh) and they would be about the same wait as me.

 Kyeong-eun: Cool.

 현우: 그래서
 Hyunwoo: Yea it is.

 경은: 세 명이서 같이

 현우: 네, 2:1로 타기도 하고, 나중에 좀 더 동생이 키가 큰 다음에는 저하고 몸무게가 비슷해졌어요. 그래서 같이 타기도 하고 (아~네~) 그랬습니다. 예, 그리고,
 Hyunwoo: Yea, we rode the used it 2:1, but later after they got a bit taller, their weights’ became similar to mine. So we use the swing together and (ahh~ ok~) yea. Yea, and,

 경은: 그리고 미끄럼틀 있잖아요.
 Kyeong-eun: There is also a slide.

 현우: 미끄럼틀 있죠. “slide”가 있죠.

 경은: 네, 근데 미끄럼틀은 사실 어른이 된 이후로는 탈수가 없어요.

 현우: 너무 짧아요.

 현우: 네, 아이들한테 피해가 될 것 같은.
 Hyunwoo: Yea, I think you will break it for the children.

 경은: 너무 미안해서 사실 미끄럼틀은 탈 수가 없어요.
 Kyeong-eun: I can’t ride the slide because I will feel so sorry if I do.

 현우: 그래서 (어른이 되고 나선) 맞아요. 그래서 케리비안베이에 가는 거죠.
 Hyunwoo: So (When you become an adult) yea. So you should go to Caribbean Bay.

 경은: 그렇죠.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.

 현우: 네, 긴 미끄럼틀을 제대로 타기 위해서.
 Hyunwoo: Yea, there are long slides there which you can ride properly.

 경은: 돈을 많이 내고.
 Kyeong-eun: You have to pay a lot.

 현우: 네. (갈 수 있겠죠) 입장료 얼마죠?
 Hyunwoo: Yea. (and then you can go) how much is the entry fee?

 경은: 어 (3만원?) 기억이 안 나는데, 더 비쌌던 것 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Um.. (30 000won?) I don’t remember but, I think it is more expensive.

 현우: 3만 원 이상인 것 같은데요. (네) 맞아요. 비싸네요.
 Hyunwoo: I think it is more than 30 000won. (Yea) Yea. It’s really expensive.

 경은: 네.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.

 현우: 어렸을 때는 미끄럼틀을 타면 굉장히 오랫동안 내려가는 기분이었는데.
 Hyunwoo: When I was little, it fell like I was going down the slide for a really long time.

 경은: 맞아요. 어른이 되고 나니까. 이거는 뭐 그냥 끝났어요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. But you became an adult. So the feeling ended.

 현우: 네, 맞아요. (내려가니까) 요즘에는 미끄럼틀에서 뛰어내릴 수도 있어요. 몸이 커서 (네 맞아요) 어렸을 땐 정말 무서웠는데,
 Hyunwoo: Yea, you are right. ( because you went down) These days I feel like I might just hop down it. Because I’m so big now (Yea, you’re right), but it was really scary when I was young.

 경은: 음, 그리고 또 뭐 있죠?
 Kyeong-eun: Um, and what else is there?

 현우: 그 외 또 정글짐도 있죠.
 Hyunwoo: above that there is a jungle gym.

 경은: 음, 정글짐.

 현우: 벤치도 철봉도 놀이기구는 아닌 것 같은데요?
 Hyunwoo: There is a bench and a chin-up bar, it seems like an amusement park doesn’t it?

 경은: 네, 맞아요. 그렇긴 하죠. (네) 근데 있는 것을 말을 하자면,
 Kyeong-eun: Yea, You’re right. It seems like that (Yea) But if we just say what is there,

 현우: 맞아요. 정말 조그마한 작은 놀이터에는 (네) 그냥 미끄럼틀 하나, 그네 하나, 벤치 하나 이렇게 있겠죠?
 Hyunwoo: You’re right. At really, tiny, little playgrounds (Yea) there is just like one slide, one swing, and one bench right?

 경은: 네. 그렇게만 있고, 조금 더 큰 곳에는 정글짐 같은 것도 있고,
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. There is only that, and at a bit bigger ones there is also a jungle gym.

 현우: 맞아요. 요즘에는 또 큰 놀이터들도 가끔씩 (네) 좀 비싼 아파트 단지에 가면 볼 수 있는데.
 Hyunwoo: That’s right. These days, sometimes there are big playground type things (Yea) in expensive apartment complexes.

 경은: 네. 맞아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. That’s right.

 현우: 이름을 모르겠어요. 그 놀이기구 이름.
 Hyunwoo: I don’t know what it is called. That kind of playground’s name.

 경은: 아, 맞아요. 굉장히 어려운.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea, you’re right. That is really difficult.

 현우: 네 맞아요. 어렵게 게 올라갔다가 내려오고 그물 있고, (맞아요) 또 다리도 있고,
 Hyunwoo: Yea you’re right. There is this thing people scramble up and scramble down, and there is a net, (right) and a bridge.

 경은: 뭐라고 하죠? 그걸?
 Kyeong-eun: What do you call it? What’s that?

 현우: 몰라요. 아무튼 놀이기구들이 많이 있으면 있을수록 좋은데.
 Hyunwoo: I don’t know. Anyway the more playgrounds there are the better.

 경은: 네
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.

 현우: 음, 저는 어렸을 때, 놀이터에 별로 안 갔기 때문에 (아) 잘 몰라요.
 Hyunwoo: Um… When I was young,

 경은: 사실 놀이터에 가면 가장 기억에 나는게, 모래 가지고 논 게 사실은 제일 기억에 나요. 어렸을 때는요.
 Kyeong-eun: actually when I go to a playground the thing that brings back the most memories, I would go to the sand and ?????. That is what I remember most from when I was a kid.

 현우: 경은씨는 모래 가지고 놀았어요?
 Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun, you went the sandbox and played?

 경은: 네.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea.

 현우: 저는 흙 가지고 놀았는데.
 Hyunwoo: I went to the dirt and played.

 경은: 네, 흙이요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea, it is dirt.

 현우: 비슷비슷하죠.
 Hyunwoo: They are very similar.

 경은: 모래 아닌가요?
 Kyeong-eun: It’s not sand?

 현우: 네, 그래요? “흙 놀이”라고 하잖아요. “흙장난”.
 Hyunwoo: Is it? I said “dirt games”. “playing with dirt”

 경은: “흙장난”
 Kyeong-eun: “playing with dirt”

 현우: 그래서 이제 손이 더러워져서 집에 돌아가면 (네) 엄마가 (네 혼나죠) “흙장난 하지 말라고 그랬지!” 혼내시는데 (네) 재밌잖아요.
 Hyunwoo: So now my hands were dirty and I went back home (Yea) and my mother (Yea, she got mad) “Didn’t I say not to play in the dirt!” she scolded (yea) and it was fun.

 경은: 네. 굉장히 재미있죠. 저는 왜 재미있었는지 모르겠어요. 지금 생각하면 (네) 더러워지잖아요. 몸이.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. It is extremely fun. I guess, I don’t know why it’s fun. Now that I think about it (Yea) it’s because you get dirty. Your body.

 현우: 그렇긴 한데, 음, 그런 거 있잖아요. 상상을 하면서 놀이를 할 수 있잖아요. (음) 그래서 흙으로 (네) 흙에 물을 부은 다음에 흙으로 뭐 그릇도 만들고 (네) 아니면 그림도 그리고.
 Hyunwoo: that it true, um, that seems right. Because you can use your imagination while you are playing.

 경은: 네, 소꿉장난도 하고.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea, and play house to.

 현우: 그리고 흙에 바닥에 구멍을 파서 (네) 구멍 위에 신문지를 올려놓고, 그 위에 흙을 뿌려요.
 Hyunwoo: And in the dirt on the ground I dug a hole (Yea) and above the hole I put down newspaper, and on top of that a sprinkled dirt on top.

 경은: 네.
 Kyeong-eun: Ah…

 현우: 그러면 함정이 되는 거예요. 지나가던 사람들이 (그런 거 하고 놀았어요?) 빠져요. 저는 그렇게 놀았어요.
 Hyunwoo: then it became a trap. And the people passing (you played games like that?) fell in. I played like that.

 경은: 아, 그랬군요.
 Kyeong-eun: Ah, so that’s how you were.

 현우: 네. 예, 그런 것도 하고 또 공을 가지고 놀 수도 있지만, 돌 가지고 놀 수도 있잖아요. 돌을 발로 차면서 (아) 비석차기 이런 거.
 Hyunwoo: Yea. Yea, I did that kind of thing, and I could have brought and played with a ball but, I could have also brought and played with a stone.

 경은: 돌을 던지는 건 아니죠?
 Kyeong-eun: Not a stone for throwing right?

 현우: 네. 던지는 건 아니고,
 Hyunwoo: No. Not for throwing.

 경은: 던지지는 않았죠?
 Kyeong-eun: You didn’t throw stones?

 현우: 절대 그런 건 아니에요. 그냥 함정 파놓고 기다리는 정도? 소극적으로.
 Hyunwoo: I would do nothing like that. I only went as far as digging and setting traps and then waiting? Passively.

 경은: 그래요.
 Kyeong-eun: Ok.

 현우: 그런 여러 가지 놀이들을 하고 놀았는데, (네) 요즘 아이들은 놀이터에 잘 안 가는 것 같기도 하고.
 Hyunwoo: I did all sorts of games but, (Yea) these days, I don’t think kids go to the playground much.

 경은: 잘 모르겠어요. 사실. (네) 근데 게임 같은 거를 많이 해서 워낙 (네) 안 갈 것 같아서 잘. (네) 비디오 게임 이거나.
 Kyeong-eun: I don’t really know. (Yea) But I think because they are playing lots of games they don’t normally go there much. I mean video games.

 현우: 맞아요. 시간이 있으면 컴퓨터 앞에 앉아서 또는 아이팟 (네) 또는 닌텐도 (네, 맞아요) X-BOX 이런 걸 가지고 게임을 많이 하는 것 같은데 (네) 그래도 가능하면 (네) 놀이터나 공원? 같은 곳에 나가서 많이 놀면 좋은 것 같아요.
 Hyunwoo: That’s right. When they have extra time they sit in front of the computer or ipod (yea) or Nintendo (Yea, you’re right) or X-box, this kind of thing. And they play a lot of games. (Yea) So when they can (Yea) I think it would be nice if they went to a playground or park type thing more often.

 경은: 네 맞아요. 좋을 것 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun: Yea. That would be good.

 현우: 네.
 Hyunwoo: Yea.

 경은: 서울에도 제발 좀 공원이나 아니면 어른을 위한 놀이터? (네) 이런 데가 많이 생겼으면 좋겠어요.
 Kyeong-eun: I think it would be nice if in Seoul at least (Yea) there were some parks or playgrounds for adults.

 현우: 네, 경은씨가 많이 만들어 주세요.
 Hyunwoo: Yea, will you please make some please?

 경은: 네, 돈 많이 벌게요.

여자들은 소개팅을 시켜 준다고 하면, ‘어, 그 남자 성격이 어때? 그 남자 무슨 일을 해?’ 그 남자에 대해서 자세히 물어 보는데 (네) 남자들은 한 마디 물어 보죠.
When girls set up blind dates “Oh, how is that guy’s personality? What does he do?” they ask in detail about that guy but (Yea) guys only ask one thing don’t they.

 김현정 : 예. 예뻐?
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea. Is she pretty?

 최경은 : 그 여자 예뻐? (네) 그렇게 (예) 말하는 것 같아요. Kyeong-eun Choi : Is that girl pretty? (Yea) I think they ask (Yea) like that.

남자인 친구들하고 이야기를 하다 보면 (네) 그 친구들이 그렇게 얘길 하더라고요.
When I talked with my guy friends (Yea) they said this.

못생기고 (네) 성격이 나쁜 여자가 있고, (네) 예쁘고 성격이 나쁜 여자가 있으면, 못생기고 성격이 나쁜 여자는 일주일 참을 수 있데요.

 김현정 : 여자들의 수다에 대해서 얘기해요.

 최경은 : 어, 여자들의 수다. 현정 씨는 수다 떠는 거 좋아해요?

 최경은 : 아, 정말요? 저는 오히려 어렸을 때 (네) 중학교 다닐 때, 고등학교 다닐 때 정말 수다를 많이 떨었어요.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Ah, really? Well I’m kind of the opposite, when I was a kid, (Yea) when I attended junior high school and high school, I chit chatted a lot.

 김현정 : 아, 지금은 안 떠세요?

 최경은 : 지금도 물론 친구들을 만나면 (네) 오래된 친구들을 만나면, 수다 떨게 많죠. 옛날 이야기하고, 옛날에 니가 어땠고, 막 이런 이야기들을 많이 하는데 (네) 새로운 사람들을 만나면 그렇게 수다 떠는 걸 좋아하지는 않아요. (아... ) 그래서 저는 오히려 어렸을 때 (예) 중학교 때, (예) 고등학교 때, 대학교 다닐 때 친구들이랑 여자들이랑 모이면, 계속 수다 떨었어요. (음... ) 남자 연예인 이야기하고, 남자친구 이야기하고, 선배들 (네) 거의 좀 남자 얘기가 좀 많았죠. 그리고 또 어렸을 때는 (네) 친구들이 화장을 어떻게 하는지 가르쳐 주기도 하고, (아... ) 조금 언니 같은 그런 의미였거든요. 저한테는. 그래서 친구들하고 수다를 많이 떨었었죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Of course now, when I meet my friends, (Yea) when I meet my old friends, we chatter a lot. We talk about old stories, how we have been, just do a lot of this sort of chatting. (Yea) When meeting new people it isn’t good to chat like that. (Ah…) So rather, when I was a kid (Yea) in junior high,(Yea) in high school, and when I attended university, when I gathered with my girl friends, we just continuously gossiped. (Mm…) We talked about male celebrities, chatted about boyfriends and our college seniors. (Yea) We almost always, I mean we talked about boys a lot. And when we were young (Yea) Our friends taught us how to do our makeup, (Ah…) They were kind of like older sisters. To me at least. So we became friends and chatted a lot.

 김현정 : 음... 어찌 보면 여자들은 수다를 어떻게 떠느냐에 따라서 친구를 구분하는 것 같기도 해요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Mm.. In some ways, I think you can divide your friends based on how girls chat.

 최경은 : 아, 그래요? 어떻게요?
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Ah, really? How?

 김현정 : 그러니까 (네) 친구들이 있잖아요. 그런데 (네) 만나서 그냥 연예인 이야기만 하고, (네) 그런 가벼운 이야기만 하면 (아... ) 그냥 아는 사람 (아... ) 도 가능한데,
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Well (Yea) you have your friends right. Then (Yea) when you meet some just chat about celebrities, (Yea) if they just talk about that sort of light topics (Ah…) it is just probably just someone you know. (Ah…)

 최경은 : 아주 친한 친구가 아닌 (네) 그냥 아는 사람.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : There not really close friends (Yea) just someone you know.

 김현정 : 그런데 만약 자기의 주변의 고민이라든가, (네, 맞아요.) 그런 이야기를 할 수 있는 친구가 진짜 친구라고 생각을 하는 거 같아요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : But if there is any problem that is close to you, (Yea, right.) if you can talk about that sort of thing with your friend it seems like it is someone who you think is really your friend.

 최경은 : 네, 맞아요. 근데 고민을 상담하는 친구들하고도 만나면, 아니면 전화 통화를 하면 고민 상담을 막 하다가 (네) 연예인 얘기도 막 하다가 (네) 두 시간 동안 막 수다를 떨다가 (네) 전화를 끊을 때 이러잖아요. (네) “아, 우리 아... 정말 할 얘기 너무 많다. 다 얘기 못 했다. (네) 나중에 만나서 또 얘기하자.” 그러고서는 전화를 끊고 (네) 다시 다음 날 만약에 또 만나면 할 얘기가 또 그만큼 많아서 (네) 두 시간, 세 시간, (네) 여섯 시간 막 이렇게 (그러니까요) 수다를 떨잖아요. (네) 현정 씨는 몇 시간까지 (음...) 한 자리에서 수다를 떨어 봤어요?
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Yea, your right. But when you meet friends who give you advice about your worries, or if you call them, and they just help you solve your worries (Yea) and just chat about celebrities,(Yea) it can take just two hours (Yea) to arrive at the end of the phone call. (Yea) “Ah, we a… Really have a lot to say. We couldn’t chat about everything. (Yea) Lets meet later and chat again.” And after you hang up the phone (Yea) when you see each other the next day, if you meet again, there is still so much to talk about (Yea) you can just chat like this for 2,3, 6 hours (I know what you mean) Hyeonjeong, for how many hours have you (Um…) gossiped for, in just one location?

 김현정 : 한, 여덟 시간?
 Hyeonjeong Kim : One time, eight hours?

 최경은 : 여덟 시간이요?
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Eight hours?

 김현정 : 네, 밥 먹고, 수다 떨고, (우와... ) 또 밥 먹으면서 또 수다 떨고.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea, I ate, gossiped, (Wow…) ate again, and gossiped again.

 최경은 : 근데, 신기하게 할 얘기가 많죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : But, you had a lot of time to chat.

 김현정 : 그럼요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : I did.

 최경은 : 주로 어떤 이야기 많이 하세요? 현정 씨는?

 김현정 : 음… 저 같은 경우는 솔직히 제가 텔레비전을 잘 안 봐서 연예인은 잘 모르고요, (네) 그래서 그냥 평소에 하는 일 (평소에 하는 일) 에 대해서. 아... 뭐, 공부하는 거라든가, (아... ) 이렇게 얘기하면 맨날 재미없는 얘기만 한다고 하는데,
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Um… Well honestly, I personally don’t watch a lot of TV so I don’t know celebrities well, (Yea) so I just talk about everyday things.(Everyday things) Ah… what else, there is studying too. (Ah…) If you talk like this everyday, I guess you are only talking about uninteresting things.

 최경은 : 어, 현정 씨 진지한 사람이군요.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Oh, you are a very serious person.

 김현정 : 그렇죠. 그렇게 믿고 싶어요. (아...) 그런데 그런 것도 있지만 심각하지 않게 남에 대해서 불평하는 얘기도 해요. (아... ) 그러니까 스트레스를 푸는 방법 중 하나로 (네) 쓰기도 해요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : I am. Well, I like to think like that. (Ah…) So sometimes I do talk about that kind of thing, but sometimes I complain about strangers. (Ah…) That is what of the techniques I use to get rid of stress.

 최경은 : 뒷담화.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : 뒷담화?(Talking behind someone’s back)

 김현정 : 그렇죠. 뒷담화.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea. 뒷담화.

 최경은 : 뒷담화... 뒷담화가 뭐죠? 현정 씨?
 Kyeong-eun Choi : 뒷담화… Hyeonjeong, what is 뒷담화?

 김현정 : 뒤에서 몰래 얘기하는 거죠.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : It is the thing you secretly say behind someone’s back.

 최경은 : 맞아요. 그 사람이 모르게 뒤에서 몰래, 조금 어떻게 보면 욕도 많이 하죠. 나쁜 이야기. 주로. (그쵸) 주로 나쁜 이야기를 하는 거죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Right. Without that person knowing, secretly talking behind their back, and in some ways it looks like your really insulting them. You say bad things. Mostly. (right) You mostly say bad things.

 김현정 : 네.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea.

 최경은 : 아... 친구들이랑 만나면 현정 씨는 뒷담화를, 나쁜 이야기를… 하나요?
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Ah… When you meet with your friends do you talk behind people’s backs, do you say bad things?

 김현정 : 그런데 친구들을 만나면 할 수 있는 게 (네) 이게 친구들이 들어도 (네) 내일이면 잊어 버릴 만하니까
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Well, when I meet my friends, I can say these things(Yea) and my friends will hear it,(Yea) but the next day they will just forget it.

 최경은 : 아... 내일이면 잊어 버릴 조금 가벼운 나쁜 말.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Ah… The next day they will forget the few light bad things you said.

 김현정 : 그쵸. 왜냐하면 원래 같이 일하는 사람하고 얘길하면 (네) 그게 문제가 되잖아요?
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea. Because naturally I chat with the people I am working with (Yea) and that becomes a problem doesn’t it?

 최경은 : 그렇죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : It does.

 김현정 : 근데 이걸 문제로 만들고 싶은 게 아니라 (네) 그냥 한 번 얘길 하고,
 Hyeonjeong Kim : But we don’t want to make these problems (Yea) we just chat once and,

 최경은 : 속상해서.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : People get upset.

 김현정 : 네. 잊어 버리고 싶은 거죠.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea. I wish they would just forget it.

 최경은 : 네, 맞아요. 여자들은 특히 속상한 일이 있거나 그럴 때 친구들한테 “아... 나 이렇게 힘든 일이 있었는데 (네) 예를 들어서 회사의 상사가 (네) 힘든 일을 시켰다 (네) 짜증이 났다.“ (네) 이런 이야기들을 친구들한테 하면 그냥 얘기를 하면서 풀어 버리는 거죠. (그렇죠) 수다를 떨면서 (네) 그런 얘기를 풀어 버리는 거죠. (네) 맞아요.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Yea, right. Girls particularly talk about upsetting things. And say to there friends “Ah… I have these difficult things. (Yea) For example my boss at work (Yea) keeps giving me difficult work so I’m really frustrated. (Yea) When you talk like that to your friends, you can relieve your stress just by chatting. (I agree) As you gossip (Yea) you forget the thing you are talking about. (Yea) Right.

 김현정 : 그대신 술을 잘 안 마시잖아요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Instead of that some people drink alcohol. But I don't drink that much.

 최경은 : 아, 맞아요. 현정 씨는 술을 아예 안 마시죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Ah, right. You don’t drink alcohol at all.

 김현정 : 네.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea.

 최경은 : 아... 그렇군요. 그리고 또 여자들은 그런 거 있지 않나요? 뒷담화를 하면서 친해진다.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Ah… That’s right. And girls are like that to aren’t they? As they talk behind peoples backs they get closer.

 김현정 : 그쵸. 그게 굉장히 서로 모이게 만들죠.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea. They really start to support each other when they do that.

 최경은 : 네, 근데 저희 주제가 뒷담화가 아닌데.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Yea, But our subject isn’t talking behind people’s backs.

 김현정 : 수다였죠. 근데
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea it’s gossiping. But,

 최경은 : 네, 수다 떨기였죠. 수다 떨기 중에 뒷담화가 조금 있어요.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Yea, it is gossiping. Talking behind people backs is just a small part of gossiping.

 김현정 : 그렇죠. 많이 (많이 있죠) 있죠.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : It is. Gossiping has a lot (A lot) of parts it.

 최경은 : 근데 오해하는 남자들도 많은 것 같아요. 여자들은 꼭 모이면 (네) 남자 얘기, (네) 아니면 주로 뒷담화 (예... ) 연예인 얘기 밖에 안 한다. (예) 근데 사실 그건 아니죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : But I think there are a lot of guys who misunderstand it. They think when girls gather (Yea) they talk only talk about guys, (Yea) or mostly talk behind people’s backs (Yea…) or talk about celebrities. But that isn’t actually it.

 김현정 : 그럼요. 저는 80% 이상이 다른, 그냥 앞으로 하고 싶은 일, 아니면 지금 하고 있는 일에 대해서 얘기하지, 그렇지는 않아요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : You’re right. Over 80% of the time I talk about other things, what I want to do in the future, or what I am doing right now. That sort of thing right?

 최경은 : 그쵸. 앞으로 어떻게 살아갈 건지에 대해서 (그렇죠) 서로 얘기해 보기도 하고, (네) 그런 좋은 이야기들도 많이 하죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Yea. We talk about with each other(Right) about how we are going to make a living to. (Yea) We talk about that kind of good thing a lot also.

 김현정 : 서로 조언을 많이 구하죠.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : And we seek each others advice.

 최경은 : 네, 맞아요. 근데 남자들에 비해서 굉장히 오랫동안 (그쵸) 그리고 사실 했던 말 또 해도 (그럼요) 재밌어요. (그렇죠) 수다 떨 때는. (네) 분명히 어제 전화로 다 얘기한 건데 (근데) 얼굴을 보고 (네) 막 얘기를 하다 보면 (네) 절대 지루하지 않아요. (그렇죠) 그게 여자들의 수다 떨기 매력인 거 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Yea, right. But compared to guys girls talk for a extremely long time (Yea) and actually girls talk about stuff they already talked about, again (Right) because it is fun. (You’re right) Obviously all the stuff you talked about yesterday on the phone, (But) when you see your friend’s face again (Yea) when you just talked about everything (Yea) it isn’t boring at all. (You’re right) I think girl’s chitchat seems more appealing when we describe it that way.

 김현정 : 경은 씨는 그래서 얼마나 오랜 시간 동안 얘기해 봤어요?
 Hyeonjeong Kim : So Kyeong-eun, how many hours have you chatted for?

 최경은 : 어, 저는 글쎄요, 놀러 갔을 때 (네) 친구들이랑 (네) 여행간 적 있었는데 (네) 정말 밤새 이야기한 거 같아요. (아... ) 밤새 친구들이랑 이야기도 하고 (네) 속상했던 거 (네) 서로한테 속상했던 거 이야기하면서 그때는 울기도 했어요. (음... 그쵸) 너 왜 그랬냐. 그때 왜 그랬냐. 그러면서 서로 좀 울다가 나중에 “그래, 우리 친하게 지내자.“ 결론은, 항상.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Oh, well, When I went to play, (Yea) with my friend, (Yea) we went on vacation and (Yea) I think we really chatted all night. (Ah…) I chatted all night with my friend and (Yea) about stressful things (Yea) we talked to each other about things that were stressing us out and then we cried. (Oh…) Why are you like that? Where were you like that? We did that and then cried to each other and then later “Well, lets become close friends.” We always conclude like that.

 김현정 : 근데 그게 매력인 것 같아요. 마음 속으로만 생각하는 것 하고, 실제로 얘길하면서 서로 이제, 이해를 한다는 것 자체가 (네) 되게 매력적인 일인 것 같아요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : But that seems nice. I think it is best to think in your mind and speak honestly to understand each other.

 최경은 : 그렇죠. 근데 남자들은 이해를 못하죠.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : Yea. But guys can’t understand.

 최경은 : 근데 사실 남자들도 수다 떨기 좋아하는 사람 되게 많은 것 같은데…
 Kyeong-eun Choi : But actually I think there are a lot of men who like to chit chat…

 김현정 : 네, 보통 그러면 남자로 안 보고, “친한 여자아이 같아.” 라고 말을 하죠. 보통?
 Hyeonjeong Kim : Yea, then people see don't him as a guy and would say "you are like a little lady" usually

 최경은 : 남자들끼리도 이야기를 많이 하는 것 같아요. 남자들끼리도 자기들만의 수다 떠는 방법이 있는 것 같아요.
 Kyeong-eun Choi : I think when it is just guys they chat a lot. I think they have their own technique for chatting.

 김현정 : 근데, 분명 다를 것 같아요.
 Hyeonjeong Kim : But I think it is clearly different.

[[Hanja]] is the Korean name for Chinese characters. More specifically, it refers to those Chinese characters borrowed from Chinese and incorporated into the Korean language with Korean pronunciation. Since a lot of Korean words are derived from Chinese, learning 한자 can be like learning prefixes, suffixes and root words. For Korean learners, learning the actual Chinese character isn't as important as learning the meaning and Korean pronunciation of the character. For example learning 驛 wouldn't be as useful as learning that the character is called '역' and means 'station.' Note that many characters can have the same pronunciation, but totally different meanings, i.e. 일(日 meaning sun) vs 일 (一 meaning one).

Please note 2: Some chinese characters have two ways to pronounce. For example, '女', whch means 'female' can be pronounced as both '여' and '녀' in Korean. But you can see, from the examples, 여 is only used when it comes as the first syllable of a word, while 녀 is only used in the middle of a word or at the end. This is a special grammatical rule called '두음법칙' or '머리소리 법칙', and North Korea doesn't accept this rule.

두음법칙 (Anyone can change this if this part looks unneccesary)
: In the first syllable of a word, ㄴ or ㄹ combined with a vowel such as ㅣ, ㅑ, ㅕ, ㅛ, ㅠ becomes ㅇ. However, when ㄹ is combined with a vowel such as ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅡ, ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅚ, it is changed into ㄴ. And this rule is only applied when the it comes to the first syllable.
