현우: 오늘은 혈액형에 대해서 이야기를 한다고요?

Hyunwoo: Did you say that we're talking about blood types today?

경은: 네. 혈액형에 대해서 이야기해 봐요. 저희 청취자분들이 이야기 레슨에서 혈액형에 대해서 이야기를 했으면 좋겠다고 제안을 해왔어요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Let's talk about blood types. Our listeners suggested that it would be nice if we talked about blood types in our iyagi lesson.

현우: 그래요? (네) 좋은 생각이에요. 경은 씨는 혈액형이 뭐예요?

Hyunwoo: Really? (Yeah.) Good idea. What do you think blood types are?

경은: 저는요. 맞춰 봐요. 알죠?

Kyeong-eun: Me? Guess. You know, right?

현우: 몰라요.

Hyunwoo: Nope.

경은: 몰라요?

Kyeong-eun: You don't know?

현우: 관심이 없어요. 그런데 혈액형에 대해서 이야기하기 전에 혈액형이 뭔지 설명을 해야 되지 않을까요?

Hyunwoo: I'm not interested in it. But before we talk about blood types, shouldn't we explain what a blood type is?

경은: 다 알죠.

Kyeong-eun: Everyone knows all about them.

현우: 혈액이 뭐예요? 혈액?

Hyunwoo: What is “hyeoraek”? “Hyeoraek”?

경은: 혈액이요? 피.

Kyeong-eun: Hyeoraek? It's blood.

현우: 혈액 그리고 형은 형태, 종류 이런 거잖아요. 그걸 영어로 간단하게 말하면 “blood type”이 잖아요. 혈액형인데, 저는 어렸을 때부터 혈액형을 알았어요.

Hyunwoo: Hyeoraek and “hyeong,” as in “hyeongtae” is like “form,” “type,” right? In English, simply “blood type,” right? So it's “blood types.” And I've known my blood type since I was little.

경은: 알았죠.

현우: 그런데 한국 사람들한테는 그게 당연한데, 또 아시아 다른 나라에 사시는 분들한테는 당연 한데, 미국 사람, 캐나다 사람, 영국 사람, 호주 사람 뭐 다른 나라에 사는 사람들한테는 이게 당연하지 않은 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: But while that's natural for Koreans, while for people living in other countries in Asia it's natural, for Americans, Canadians, Brits, Australians—for people living in other countries, I think it's not normal.

경은: 맞아요. 저도 깜짝 놀랐어요. 한국에서는 “너 혈액형 뭐야?” 그러면 당연히 “혈액형 뭐야.”라고 말할 수 있는데 외국인들은 “잘 모르는데” 이렇게 대답을 하는 경우가 많더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I was surprised, too. In Korea, if you ask, “What's your blood type?” we naturally can say, “My blood type is whatever,” but I understand that foreigners often answer, “I don't know.”

현우: “잘 모르는데.”라고 대답하면 좀 얌전한 거고, “왜? 왜 물어보는 거야?”라고 물어보는 게 조금 더 일반적인 반응인 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: If they answer, “I don't know,” it's a little gentle, while “Why? Why're you asking that?” seems like a little more of a typical response.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

현우: 네. 특히 한국에서 생활하고 있는 외국인이 아니라 외국에서 만난 외국인이면 잘 모르더라고요. 근데 경은 씨.

Hyunwoo: But you know what? If you blindfold someone and tell them to drink a beverage, and then tell them, “The thing you're drinking now is the most expensive one,” sometimes it seems a little delicious, doesn't it? It's just like those blindfold tests, in my opinion.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 만약에 어떤 사람이 “저는 소심해요. 소심해요.”라고 계속 말하고, 그런데 “혈액형 맞춰보세요.” 그러면 A형이라고 생각할 것 같고, “저는 A형이라서 소심해요.”라고 말하면 “저 사람은 정말 A형이구나” 저 사람이 정말 B형이어도, 믿을 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: If someone keeps saying, “I'm timid. I'm timid,” and says, “Guess my blood type,” it seems like you'll think it's A, and if they say, “I'm timid because I'm an A,” it seems like you'll believe that that person is really an A, even though they're really a B.

경은: 근데 여자들끼리는 그런 것들도 있어요. “AB형 여자인 친구는 안 맞아. 그래서 친구가 될 수 없어.” 이렇게 까지 말하는 사람들도 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: But women do those things, too. There are a lot of people who even say things like, “I don't mix well with AB women. So we can't be friends.”

현우: 제 생각에는 그 친구가 AB형이라는 거를 모르면 그렇게 말 할 수 없는데 그냥 그 사람이 싫은 거예요.

Hyunwoo: In my opinion, if you don't know that the friend is AB, you can't say something like that, but it's just that you hate that person.

경은: 편견을 가지고 있는 거죠.

Kyeong-eun: Because you're prejudiced.

현우: 그 사람이 일단 마음에 안 드는데 AB형이라는 걸 알았어요.

Hyunwoo: Originally since you didn't like that person, you think they're AB.

경은: 어쩐지.

Kyeong-eun: So that's why.

현우: “어쩐지 그래서 좀 이상했구나.”

경은: 근데 유난히 그런 혈액형별 성격이야기를 싫어하는 사람도 있더라고요. 당연히 장난으로 생각하는 사람들도 많은데, 장난으로 “너 B형이라서 그런 거구나.”라고 말하면 굉장히 싫어하는 사람들도 있더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: But I understand there are also people who particularly hate talking about blood type-based personalities. Of course there are also a lot people who think of it jokingly, but if you teasingly say, “Ah, it's because you're a B,” I've noticed there are people too who really hate it.
