Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyunwoo.

Hyunwoo: Hello, everyone.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, everybody.

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: Yes.

Hyunwoo: Did you say that we're talking about blood types today?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Let's talk about blood types. Our listeners suggested that it would be nice if we talked about blood types in our iyagi lesson.

Hyunwoo: Really? (Yeah.) Good idea. What do you think blood types are?

Kyeong-eun: Me? Guess. You know, right?

Hyunwoo: Nope.

Kyeong-eun: You don't know?

Hyunwoo: I'm not interested in it. But before we talk about blood types, shouldn't we explain what a blood type is?

Kyeong-eun: Everyone knows all about them.

Hyunwoo: What is “hyeoraek”? “Hyeoraek”?

Kyeong-eun: Hyeoraek? It's blood.

Hyunwoo: Hyeoraek and “hyeong,” as in “hyeongtae” is like “form,” “type,” right? In English, simply “blood type,” right? So it's “blood types.” And I've known my blood type since I was little.

Kyeong-eun: Of course you've known.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. And of course you've known yours.

Kyeong-eun: Sure. Naturally.

Hyunwoo: But while that's natural for Koreans, while for people living in other countries in Asia it's natural, for Americans, Canadians, Brits, Australians—for people living in other countries, I think it's not normal.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I was surprised, too. In Korea, if you ask, “What's your blood type?” we naturally can say, “My blood type is whatever,” but I understand that foreigners often answer, “I don't know.”

Hyunwoo: If they answer, “I don't know,” it's a little gentle, while “Why? Why're you asking that?” seems like a little more of a typical response.

Kyeong-eun: Really?

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Especially if it's not foreigners living Korea, but foreigners that you met in a foreign country, I believe that they don't know. But, Kyeong-eun...

Kyeong-eun: Yes?

Hyunwoo: Why again do we ask Koreans their blood type?

Kyeong-eun: Hmm...

Hyunwoo: Because we need their blood?

Kyeong-eun: No. Usually I think we ask because of your personality. Personality according to blood type.

Hyunwoo: There are people who believe that your personality is different based on your blood type, but I don't believe it at all.

Kyeong-eun: I believe it a little.

Hyunwoo: It's possible, of course. But I don't believe that all the people in the whole people can be divided into four or five types.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. But I think it became more popular because of a movie.

Hyunwoo: A movie?

Kyeong-eun: There was a movie called “Type B Boyfriend,” wasn't there? So because of that movie, people were curious about whether Type B men's personalities are really like that, so I think the idea of personalities differing by blood type became more popular. Actually.

Hyunwoo: Ah, I didn't know that. But in Korea since before that movie came out, we had the habit, or culture, or whatever, of asking about each other's blood types a lot.

Kyeong-eun: It seems like it was like that since elementary school. In elementary school while getting a blood test, they tell you all what your blood type is, don't they? At the same time, we learn about it, too, don't we? While we learn that If your mom and dad's blood type is such-and-such, you have to have so-and-so kind of blood type, if by chance our blood type is a little different, “Your parents found you somewhere,” we joked a lot. When we were little.

Hyunwoo: For example, if two AO people marry, in that case an 00 can come out, can't it? But I guess around me there had also been people, too, who thought, “Mom and Dad are both type A, but I'm O! Where did I come from?” I'm, first of all, type B. What's your blood type?

Kyeong-eun: I'm A.

Hyunwoo: I don't know anything about how you are if you're A or B.

Kyeong-eun: I really know it well.

Hyunwoo: Please explain a little about it. What kind of person is an A?

Kyeong-eun: While As are a little gentle, a lot of them are timid and careful. And compared to other blood types they're a little less lively, of course.

Hyunwoo: What's the liveliest blood type?

Kyeong-eun: They say that O and B are the liveliest. But especially B's don't worry about others. Because they only think about themselves, they say.

Hyunwoo: But this kind of thing, really in Korea like Kyeong-eun said, A's are like this, B's are like that, O's are like such-and-such, there are all these kinds of principles and rules.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: But you know what? If you blindfold someone and tell them to drink a beverage, and then tell them, “The thing you're drinking now is the most expensive one,” sometimes it seems a little delicious, doesn't it? It's just like those blindfold tests, in my opinion.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyunwoo: If someone keeps saying, “I'm timid. I'm timid,” and says, “Guess my blood type,” it seems like you'll think it's A, and if they say, “I'm timid because I'm an A,” it seems like you'll believe that that person is really an A, even though they're really a B.

Kyeong-eun: But women do those things, too. There are a lot of people who even say things like, “I don't mix well with AB women. So we can't be friends.”

Hyunwoo: In my opinion, if you don't know that the friend is AB, you can't say something like that, but it's just that you hate that person.

Kyeong-eun: Because you're prejudiced.

Hyunwoo: Originally since you didn't like that person, you think they're AB.

Kyeong-eun: So that's why.

Hyunwoo: “Ah—no wonder, since it's like that, it was a little strange.”

Kyeong-eun: “Ah—so that's why we don't mix well.”

Hyunwoo: I think it might be that they're sticking that reason in there.

Kyeong-eun: It seems that way.

Hyunwoo: Anyway, no matter what, in Korea blood type is currently considered to be extremely important, right?

Kyeong-eun: But I understand there are also people who particularly hate talking about blood type-based personalities. Of course there are also a lot people who think of it jokingly, but if you teasingly say, “Ah, it's because you're a B,” I've noticed there are people too who really hate it.

Hyunwoo: And interestingly, I think Japan is like that too, but interestingly if you read a Korean newspaper there's a section where they print blood type fortunes.

Kyeong-eun: Really? I've never seen that.

Hyunwoo: I haven't seen it often, but I think it exists. Having said it's today's fortune, by birth year, too, people will have such-and-such kind of day, today. Be careful, or since it's a good day, wait. There's this kind of thing.

Kyeong-eun: Astrology

Hyunwoo: There's astrology, too, and blood type fortunes, also.

Kyeong-eun: That's really curious.

Hyunwoo: Since I don't believe in fortunes themselves, it seems to me that astrology fortunes and fortunes for the year you're born are the same.

Kyeong-eun: I read them for fun.

Hyunwoo: Do you believe them?

Kyeong-eun: There are times when I believe them a little. I only believe the good things.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

Kyeong-eun: Intentionally, if I read something good, I think, “It's going to turn out like this.”

Hyunwoo: I think that's important.

Kyeong-eun: So while reading blood type fortunes, too, “Isn't it going a bit far?”

Hyunwoo: Blood type fortunes are really a bit severe.

Kyeong-eun: But if we know about personalities depending on blood types, I think it's interesting.

Hyunwoo: I'm really curious what our listeners think about this. And whether our TalkToMeInKorean broadcast listeners know their own blood type.

Kyeong-eun: Please leave us a comment.

Hyunwoo: If your blood type is A, B, O, or AB. Oh, there are four types.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. Four types, of course.

Hyunwoo: Which of these you are, whether you know, if you happen to know, how you found out.

Kyeong-eun: And whether you believe that personalities depend on your blood type.

Hyunwoo: Please let us know.

Kyeong-eun: Please tell us.

Hyunwoo: See you at our next lesson.

Kyeong-eun: Have a nice day.

Hyunwoo: Have a nice day.
