Seokjin: KyungHwa—(Yeah?) I have invited you specially today (Yeah.) because today's topic is interesting. I think you are a very interesting person, you see. (Yeah.) Do you find yourself interesting?

경화: 남을 웃기는 사람은 아닌데, 잘 웃는 사람이라고 생각해요.

KyungHwa: I'm not someone who makes people laugh, but I think I'm someone who laughs a lot.

석진: 잘 웃는 사람이요?

Seokjin: You laugh a lot?

경화: 네.

KyungHwa: Yeah.

석진: 그렇구나. 이번 주제가 유행어예요.

Seokjin: I seeds. Today's topic is popular lines from TV shows or movies.

경화: 네.

KyungHwa: Yeah.

석진: 유행어 많이 써 보셨어요?

Seokjin: Have you used a lot of popular quotes?

경화: 제가 써 보기 보다는 친구들이 따라할 때 많이 웃었죠.

KyungHwa: Rather than using it myself, I laugh a lot when my friends say it, of course.

석진: 주로 웃는 스타일이구나. (네.) 웃기는 그런 사람은 아니고?

Seokjin: Ah, you're of the laughing persuasion. (Yeah.) And you're not a funny person?

경화: 네. 그래서 재밌는 사람을 좋아해요.

KyungHwa: Yeah. So I like interesting people.

석진: 그렇구나. 경화 씨처럼 이제 자주 웃는 사람도 있겠지만, 그냥 여러 친구들 만날 때 안 웃는사람도 있잖아요.

Seokjin: I'd no idea. There must be people like you, now, who laugh frequently, but there are also people—Aren't there?—who, just when meeting with some friends, they don't laugh.

경화: 맞아요.

KyungHwa: That's right.

석진: 그런 사람들을 웃기려면 여러 방법이 있겠는데, 유행어를 많이 아는 것도 되게 좋은 방법이에요.

Seokjin: There must be various methods of making those kinds of people laugh, and knowing a lot of trendy quotes, too, is a great way to do that.

경화: 맞아요.

KyungHwa: That's right.

석진: 저는 한국어를 공부하는 외국인들이 이 점을 꼭 알았으면 좋겠어요.

Seokjin: I think it'd be great if foreigners studying Korean made sure to know this point.

경화: 어떤 점이요?

KyungHwa: What point is that?

석진: 유행어를 많이 알면 인기가 많아지고, (맞아요.) 한국 사람들이 너무 좋아해요.

Seokjin: If you know a lot of popular quotes, you'll become popular, (That's right.) and Koreans love it.

경화: 맞아요. 그래서 개그 프로그램을 많이 봐야 돼요.

KyungHwa: That's right. So you have to watch a lot of comedy shows.

석진: 맞아요. 맞아요. “개콘”이라든지, “개그 콘서트” 뭐 그런 프로그램 많죠.

Seokjin: That's right. That's right. There are a lot of programs called, like, “Gacon,” or “Gag Concert,” of course.

경화: 네. 저는 “개그 콘서트” 굉장히 좋아해요.

KyungHwa: Yeah. I love “Gag Concert.”

석진: 매주 봐요?

Seokjin: Do you watch it every week?

경화: 거의 매주 봐요. 동생이, 못 보면 따로 다운 받아 줘요.

KyungHwa: Almost every week. My little sibling goes and downloads it for me if I miss it.

석진: 다운로드?

Seokjin: Downloads it?

경화: 네.

KyungHwa: Yeah.

석진: 아! 혹시 생각나는 유행어 있어요?

Seokjin: Ah! By any chance are there any popular lines you remember?

경화: “스타가 되고 싶으면 연락해!”

KyungHwa: “If you want to become a star, gimme a call!”

경화: 그거 너무 재밌었어요. 왜냐하면 그게 전라도 사투리여서 더 친숙해서 더 재밌었어요.

KyungHwa: That was so great. Because it was in the Jeolla-do dialect, because it was more familiar it was funnier.

석진: 경화 씨, 고향이...?

Seokjin: KyungHwa—you're from...?

경화: 네. 전라도예요.

KyungHwa: Yep. Jeolla-do.

석진: 전라도!

Seokjin: Jeolla-do!

경화: 네. 저희 어머니도 그래서 굉장히 좋아했어요. 그 유행어.

KyungHwa: Yeah. My mom loved it for that, too. That expression.

석진: 그랬구나. 그리고 유행어를 잘 모르면 왠지 “제 또래들보다 좀 뒤쳐진다”는 그런 느낌도 들긴해요.

Seokjin: Ah, I see. And if you don't know the TV and movie quotes, for some reason, you definitely get that feeling that your peers are passing you by.

경화: 네. 맞아요.

KyungHwa: Yeah. That's right.

석진: 다른 사람들이 그런 유행어를 하면서 막 웃고 있는데 저 혼자 모르면 상당히 제가 시대에 뒤쳐지는 사람, 아니면 뭐 재미가 없는 사람처럼 느껴졌었어요.

Seokjin: When other people were laughing away using those expressions, but I alone didn't know what they meant, I started feeling like I'm a person from another generation, or, like, a boring person.

경화: 네. 저도 한동안 개그 콘서트 안 봤거든요. 그런데 요즘에 사투리 쓰는 사람이 표준어 쓰는 것처럼 하는 거 다들 따라 하길래, 저도 챙겨 봤어요. 일부러.

KyungHwa: Yeah. I also hadn't watched Gag Concert for a while, you see. But these days since everyone imitates what people who originally speak dialectic Korean say when they speak in standard Korean, I sat down and watched it. Deliberately.

석진: 혹시 그것도 유행어 있어요?

Seokjin: Is there by any chance a popular phrase about that, too?

경화: 네. “서울말은 끝만 올리면 되는 거니? 아니, 가끔은 내릴 때도 있어.”

KyungHwa: Yeah. “When you speak in Seoul Korean, it's okay if you just raise the intonation at the end, right? No, sometimes it goes down, too.”

석진: 경화 씨 되게 재밌는데요?

Seokjin: Is it really fun for you?

경화: 저 따라하는 거 좋아하는데 별로 제가 하면 사람들이 안 웃더라고요.

KyungHwa: I like quoting it, but I feel like people don't really laugh when I say it.

석진: 그래도 재밌었어요. 그런데 그건 경상도 사투리를 하는 사람이 해야 더 재밌어요.

KyungHwa: Yeah. So you say it.

석진: 네. “허경환”이 그 개그 프로에 나오는 그 주인공이죠. (네.) 맞아요. 그리고 또 주의해야 할점이 있어요. 좀 오래된 유행어를 하면 또 재미없는 사람이 될 수도 있어요.

Seokjin: Yeah. Kyung-hwan Heo is a star from that comedy show, of course. (Yeah.) That's right. And there's something I have to warn you about, too. If you sorta say older quotes, you can also become a lame person.

경화: 아! 네. 맞아요.

KyungHwa: Ah! Yeah. That's right.

석진: 옛날에 “여보세요?” 이 말로 정말 많은 사람들을 웃겼어요. (네.) 되게 크게 유행을 했었는데,만약에 지금 친구가 전화를 걸었는데, 제가 전화를 받으면서 “여보세요?”하면 되게 싫어할거예요.

Seokjin: Most everyone used to laugh when they heard, “Yello?” (Yeah.) It was a really big trend, but now if my friend called and I answered, “Yello?” they'd really hate it.

경화: 네. 저도 그 유행어가 굉장히 유행했었다는 사실은 기억하는데, 그걸 지금 들으면 전혀 왜 웃긴지 모르겠어요.

KyungHwa: Yeah. I remember that being extremely trendy, but now when I hear it I have no idea what's funny about it.

석진: 네. 조심해야 돼요. 그래서 항상 TV를 자주 보는 게 중요하고요. (네.) 이미 지나간 유행어는안 쓰는 게 (네, 맞아요.) 더 좋을 것 같아요.

Seokjin: Yeah. You've gotta be careful. And so it's important to always watch TV often. (Yeah.) I think it's better to not use quotes that have gone past their time. (Yeah, that's right.)

경화: 유행어. 말 그대로 유행어니까, 그 때 유행하는 유행어를 써 줘야 돼요. 그래야 웃길 수 있어요.

KyungHwa: Popular lines. Since the phrases themselves are popular, you have to use the expressions that are popular at the time. Otherwise it won't be funny.

석진: 해외에는 어떤 유행어가 있는지 되게 궁금해요.

Seokjin: I'm really curious what kinds of expressions they have abroad.

경화: 해외에서 유행어 쓰는 거는 상상이 안 돼요. (그렇죠. 그렇죠.) 네. 외국어로 유행어가 있는 건상상이 안돼요.

KyungHwa: I can't imagine using lines from TV and movies abroad. (Right. Right.) Yeah. I can't imagine those expressions in foreign languages.
