V + 아/어 + 야겠다 : This pattern is used for when you think something is advisable, similar to "had better" or "(I) guess (I) should" or "(I) guess I have to." This pattern is often used in a way to reflect your own personal thought, so the regular 다 ending is often used (i.e. 가야겠다). This is less strong than the other patterns which stress obligation such as V + 아/어 + 야 되다, V + 아/어 + 야지 and V + 아/어 + 야 하다.
Conjugation examples
For Conjugation rules, see the basic conjugation for 아/어/여. Some basic examples:
- 가다 → 가야겠다
- 오다 → 와야겠다
- 먹다 → 먹어야겠다
- 가르치다 → 가르쳐야겠다
- 놀다 → 놀아야겠다 (irregular ㄹ verb)
- 듣다 → 들어야겠다 (irregular ㄷ verb)
Never leave a space between -야- and -겠다.
Sentence Examples
- Some of the situations below can be self thought, or talking to yourself, so no high form would be necessary in those situations.
