Location

This is the standard dialect in North Korea. It's spoken in 자강도, 평안도, and the capital city 평양.

Pronunciation

  • The 평안 dialect doesn't drop consonants in Chinese-based words in the beginning or in the middle of words.

  • North Korean doesn't add a middle ㅅ (사이 시옷) to a Korean-root with no 받침 in compound words (like 젓가락 vs. 저가락)

  • North Korean adds 여 instead of 어 after compound vowels on verbs

  • ㅂ irregular verbs always follow the normal rules when conjugating, except for one syllable words
