Description

A/V + (으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 줄 알았다: This pattern has two meanings, depending on the context and intonation.

1. Used to say you thought was done, is being done, or would be done it wasn't (depending on whether you use (으)ㄴ, 는, or (으)ㄹ. For adjectives, it means "I thought he/she was (adjective) [but he's/she's not]."

2. Used to state that you already know something.

Notes

  • There are three patterns:
    • A/V + (으)ㄴ 줄 알았다 - Used mostly to describe the past and adjectives
    • V + 는 줄 알았다 - Used to describe the present (is A + 는 줄 알았다 possible?)
    • A/V + (으)ㄹ 줄 알았다 - Future tense or something that is more suppositional.
Example of the difference
