Kyeong-eun: Hello, Hyunwoo.

현우: 경은 씨. (네) 5월이잖아요. 지금은.

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun—(Yes?) It's May, isn't it? Right now?

경은: “가정의 달”이에요.

Kyeong-eun: It's “Family Month.”

현우: “가정의 달”.

Hyunwoo: “Family Month.”

경은: “가정의 달”.

Kyeong-eun: “Family Month.”

현우: “가정의 달”이라는 것이 오늘의 주제인데요.

Hyunwoo: And this thing called “Family Month” is today's topic.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: “가정의 달”. “가정”이라는 것은 가족하고 비슷하죠?

Hyunwoo: In Korean, “The Month for 'Gajeong.” The word “gajeong” is similar to the word “gajok” which means “family,” right?

경은: 네. 가족.

Kyeong-eun: Yep. Family.

현우: 가족이 함께 살고 있는 그런 환경이 가정인데, “가정의 달”, 왜 5월이 “가정의 달”이죠?

Hyunwoo: “'Gajeong' is more the circumstance of living with one's family, so why is May “Family Month,” again?

경은: 왜냐하면 5월 5일에어린이날 있잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: Because Children's Day is on May fifth, isn't it?

현우: 5월 5일은 어린이날.

Hyunwoo: Children's Day, May fifth.

경은: 그리고 5월 8일에 어버이날이 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: And Parents' Day is on May eighth.

현우: 네. 그리고 5월 8일은 어버이날이고요.

Hyunwoo: Yes. And May eighth is Parents' Day.

경은: 그래서 “가정의 달”이죠?

Kyeong-eun: So it's “Family Month,” right?

현우: 그게 다예요?

Hyunwoo: Is that everything?

경은: 5월 15일에 스승의 날이 있어요, 그런데 스승의 날은 “가정의 달”이랑 상관 없죠?

Kyeong-eun: Teachers' Day is on May fifteenth, but Teachers' Day doesn't have anything to do with “Family Month,” does it?

현우: 글쎄요.

Hyunwoo: Hm....

경은: 상관 있어요?

Kyeong-eun: Is it related?

현우: 스승의 날에 부르는 노래가 있잖아요.

Hyunwoo: There's a song we sing on Teachers' Day, isn't there?

경은: “스승은 어버이” 이다.

Kyeong-eun: It's “Teachers Are Parents.”

현우: 네. “스승은 마음의 어버이이다.” 그런 게 있고, 또 한국에서는 선생님을 가족처럼 존중하기 때문에 어린이의 날, 그리고 “어버이날”이라는 말에서 “어버이”는 부모님을 말하는 건데, 별 로 안 쓰이죠?

Hyunwoo: Yeah. “Teachers are our minds' parents.” There's that song, and also because in Korea we respect teachers like family, Children's Day, and the words “Parents' Day” [are “Oebeoi Day” in Korean], “oeboei” means “bumonim,” or “parents,” but that word isn't really used, is it?

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: “어버이날” 할 때에만 쓰이는 데, 어버이날, 그리고 스승의 날.

Hyunwoo: It's used only when we say “Parents' Day,” and there's Teachers' Day.

경은: 스승의 날.

Kyeong-eun: Teachers' Day.

현우: 네. 이 세 날이 있어서 “가정의 달”인데요. 또 이번 해에는 또 석가탄신일도 있어요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Because there are these three days, it's Family Month. And also this year there's also Buddha Day.

경은: 석가탄신일도 있죠.

Kyeong-eun: There's also Buddha Day, of course.

현우: 석가는 불교의 창시자인데, 석가 탄신일, 그 석가의 생신, 생일이라고 할 수 있는 석가 탄신일이 또 5월에 있어서 공휴일이 많아요.

Hyunwoo: Buddha is the founder of Buddhism, and since Buddha's Day, or you could say Buddha's Birthday, is also in May, there are a lot of national holidays.

경은: 공휴일이 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: A lot of holidays.

현우: 어버이날하고 스승의 날은 휴일은 아니잖아요.

Hyunwoo: Parents' Day and Teachers' Day aren't days off, are they?

경은: 휴일은 아니에요.

Kyeong-eun: No, they aren't.

현우: 그런데 어린이날은 휴일이에요. 어린이는 쉬어야 되고, 부모님하고 스승님들은 쉴 수 없는.

Hyunwoo: But Children's Day is a day off. Children have to rest, and parents and teachers can't.

경은: 어린이날은 그런데, 어린이가 혼자 쉬면 안 되니까, 그래서 공휴일이 된 게 아닐까 싶어요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right, but it seems like since it's not okay for children to rest alone, it must have become a national holiday.

현우: 경은 씨, 그런데 어린이날이 원래 어떻게 생겼는지 아세요?

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun, but do you know where Children's Day originally comes from?

경은: 모르겠는데요.

Kyeong-eun: No idea.

현우: 어린이날은 어린이들이 그냥 놀라고 생긴 날이 아니라.

Hyunwoo: Children's Day isn't a day for children to just play.

경은: 물론 그렇죠.

Kyeong-eun: Of course not.

현우: 전 세계의 어린이들 중에서 밥을 못 먹고, 굻어 죽는 아이들이 있으니까, “그런 아이들을 보살피자” 그런 생각에서 어린이날이 생겼고, 그러다 보니까 그런 굶어 죽는 아이들 뿐 만 아니라, 어린이 전체적으로 건강도 챙기고, 어린이들의 복지를 생각하자 라는 마음에서 어린이날이 기념이 되고 있어요.

Hyunwoo: Among the children of the world, there are kids who can't eat, who are starving, so Children's Day was created with the idea, “Let's take care of those kids.” And so, we commemorate Children's Day not only for those starving kids, but also with the thought in mind: “Let's take care of the health of children in general, and let's think about the well-being of children.”

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그래서 어린이날에는 항상 어디를 가도, 어린이들이 많죠?

Hyunwoo: So on Children's Day, wherever you go there are always a lot of children, right?

경은: 어른들도 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: There are a lot of adults, too.

현우: 어린이를 데리고 나온 어른들?

Hyunwoo: Adults who've brought their kids?

경은: 어린이를 데리고 나온 어른도 많고, 커플도 많고요, (쉬는 날이기 때문에) 쉬는 날이니까 어디를 가든 사람이 너무 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: There are a lot of adults who've brought their kids, and a lot of couples, (because it's a day off) since it's a day of, wherever you go, there are too many people.

현우: 그렇죠?

Hyunwoo: Right?

경은: 어린이날인데, 어린이도 물론 기뻐하지만, 어른들도 기뻐하는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: It's Children's Day, so of course children are happy, but I think adults are happy, too.

현우: 글쎄요?

Hyunwoo: I dunno...

경은: 아니에요?

Kyeong-eun: No?

현우: 어린이날에 부모가 아닌 어른들은 좋아하는데, 어린이가 집에 있는 부모들은 선물도 사 줘야 되고, 그리고 재미있는 곳에 데려가 줘야 되고 해서 굉장히 피곤해 할 수 있어요. 그래도 일 년에 한 번, 이런 어린이날이 있는 건 정말 좋은 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: On Children's Day, adults who aren't parents like it, but parents who have children at home have to buy them presents and have to take them somewhere fun, so it might be exhausting. Even still, I think having Children's Day once a year is a really good thing.

경은: 네. 좋은 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. I think it's good.

현우: 그리고 또 어버이날에는 어린이들이 부모님을 위해서 뭔가 해 주잖아요?

Hyunwoo: And also, on Parents' Day, children do something for their parents, don't they?

경은: 그렇죠.

Kyeong-eun: Sure.

현우: 경은 씨는 올 해 어버이날에 뭐 했어요?

Hyunwoo: What did you do on Parents' Day this year?

경은: 저요? 저 좋은 거 해 드렸어요.

Kyeong-eun: Me? I did something nice for them.

현우: 좋은 선물 해 드렸어요?

Hyunwoo: Did you get them a nice present?

경은: 좋은 선물 해 드렸어요. 현우 씨는요?

Kyeong-eun: I gave them a nice present. How about you?

현우: 저도 선물 드리고, 그리고 전화하고, 그랬죠. 어버이날, 그리고 스승의 날, (스승의 날) 스승의 날도 굉장히 중요한데, 지금은 학교에서 어떻게 하고 있는지 저희는 학생이 아니니까 모르는데, 예전에 학교에 다닐 때에는 스승의 날에 항상 선물을 가지고 학교에 갔었죠.

Hyunwoo: I gave them a present, too, and I called them and stuff. Parents' Day and Teachers' Day, (Teachers' Day) Teachers' Day also is extremely important, but since we aren't students anymore I don't know what they do in school now, but before when I went to school on Teachers' Day we always brought a present to school, didn't we?

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yes, we did.

현우: 그러면 그 선생님들은 선물을 너무 많이 받아서, 집에 못 가지고 가는 거예요.

Hyunwoo: And so the teachers got so many presents that they couldn't take them all home.

경은: 교탁에 선물들이 쌓여 있었어요.

Kyeong-eun: The presents were piled up on their desks.

현우: 맞아요.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

경은: 요즘은 안 될 걸요? 그렇게 하면?

Kyeong-eun: I wonder if these days it'd be a problem... If that happened...

현우: 그래요?

Hyunwoo: Really?

경은: 네. 안 되는 걸로 알고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I understand that it's no good.

현우: 선물도 못 받아요?

Hyunwoo: They can't even receive presents?

경은: 옛날에 문제가 조금 많았었어요. 선물을 주는 척 하면서 그 안에 돈이 들어 있고, 이런 경우가 많이 있어서 선물을 받을 수 없는 걸로 알고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: There'd been kind of a lot of problems before. While pretending to give presents, people put money inside, and because there were a lot of situations like this, as I understand it they can't receive presents.

현우: 그래요? (네.) 확실해요? (네.)

Hyunwoo: Really? (Yeah.) Are you sure? (Yes.)

경은: 확실해요.

Kyeong-eun: I'm sure.

현우: 아직 그래도 선생님한테 선물 주는 거는 괜찮은 것 같은데.

Hyunwoo: Still, giving presents to your teacher seems okay.

경은: 그리고 생각해 보세요, 만약에 가난한 학생이 있는데 비교 되잖아요. 자기도 좋은 선물을 드리고 싶은데 돈이 없어서 드릴 수가 없으면 얼마나 슬프겠어요. 그런 이유도 있고 해서 선물을 안 받는 걸로 알고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: And think about it. If there's a poor student, comparisons could be drawn, couldn't they? Even though they want to give their teacher a nice present, if they can't give them anything because they don't have money it'd be really sad. I believe they can't get gifts because of that, as well.

현우: 선물을 주는지, 안 주는지는 사실 그렇게 중요하지 않아요. 그냥 선생님한테 감사합니다. “가르쳐 주셔서 고맙습니다.”라는 마음만 표현할 수 있으면, 그걸로 충분한 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: It's not actually that important whether you give a present or not. If you're just thankful to your teacher, if you can just express your feelings that “Because you've taught me, I'm thankful,” I think that's enough.

경은: 그렇죠.

Kyeong-eun: That's true.

현우: 네. 그래서 어린이날, 어버이날, 스승의 날, 이렇게 세 가지의 가정 관련 날이 있는데요, 어린이날, 그리고 부모님의 날, 선생님의 날이죠.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. So Children's Day, Parents' Day, Teachers' Day, there are these three days connected with family.

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yes.

현우: 그래서 “가정의 달”이에요. 그리고 5월은 “가정의 달”이라는 어떤 타이틀을 붙이기에 날씨가 제일 적합한 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: So it's “Family Month.” And when giving May a name like “Family Month,” I think the weather is the most appropriate.

경은: 맞아요. 날씨도 너무 좋죠.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. The weather is great, isn't it?

현우: 날씨도 좋고, 아직 더워지기 전이고, 이제 더 이상 춥지 않고, 바깥에 나들이도 갈 수 있고.

Hyunwoo: The weather is nice, and it's still before the weather gets hot, and it's not cold anymore, and you can go spend time outside.

경은: 가족끼리 시간을 보내기에 참 좋은 달인 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: I think it's an excellent month for spending time with family.

현우: 그리고 제가 알아보니까 다른 나라는 어린이날이 6월 달에도 있고 (그래요?) 네. 다른 달에 있는데, 제 생각에는 5월이 어린이가 놀기에는 제일 좋지 않을까.

Hyunwoo: And I've found that in other countries Children's Day is in June. (Really?) Yeah. It's in another month, but in my opinion it seems that May is the best month for children to play.

경은: 한국에서는.

Kyeong-eun: In Korea, at least.

현우: 한국에서는. 네. 그런 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: In Korea. Yes. Seems that way.

경은: 네. 제가 생각할 때도 그런 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, I think that's true, too.

현우: 저희가 지금까지 한국의 “가정의 달”에 대해서 이야기해 봤는데요, 저희 청취자 여러분의 나라에서는 이런 “가정의 달”이 따로 있는지 궁금하고요, 그리고 어린이날, 어버이날, 스승의 날이 따로 따로 이렇게 있다면 언제, 언제, 언제인지 궁금해요.

Hyunwoo: We've been talking about Korea's “Family Month” up until now, but I'm curious whether in our listeners' countries there is a separate “Family Month,” and if there are different days like this for Children's Day, Parents' Day, and Teachers' Day, I'm curious when they all are.
