현우: 요즘 어떻게 지내고 계세요?

Hyunwoo: How are you, these days?

경은: 요즘 아주 바쁘게 지내고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: These days I'm rather busy.

현우: 뭐하느라 바빠요?

Hyunwoo: Why's that?

경은: 파티 하느라 바빠요.

Kyeong-eun: Because I've been going to parties.

현우: 사람들하고 노느라고 바쁘죠?

Hyunwoo: You're busy because you're hanging out with people, right?

경은: 네. 일도 많이 해요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. And I work a lot.

현우: 맞아요. 노느라고 바빠서 일도 더 바빠진 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: That's right. Because you're busy playing, it seems like work gets busier.

경은: 그런 것 같아요. 현우 씨는 요즘 어떻게 지내고 있어요?

Kyeong-eun: That's true. How have you been lately?

현우: 저도 똑같이 일을 하고, 놀고, 그렇게 지내고 있는데요. 오늘 주제는 좀 특별해요.

Hyunwoo: I'm the same. I've been working and playing. Today's topic is a little special.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Oh yeah?

현우: 평소에는 우리가 하나의 주제에 대해서 이야기하잖아요. 그런데 오늘은 주제를 세 가지로 골랐어요,

Hyunwoo: Ordinarily we talk about one topic, don't we? But today I've chosen three topics,

경은: 세 가지나?

Kyeong-eun: Three?

현우: 근데 공통점이 있어요.

Hyunwoo: But they have something in common.

경은: 뭐죠?

Kyeong-eun: What's that?

현우: 다 장소라는 거. 서울에 오면 많은 분들이 이 세 군데에 가요. 가서 친구를 만나기도 하고 밥 을 먹기도 하고 그렇게 여러 가지를 할 수 있는데, 사실은 제 생각에는 이 세 군데가 그냥 유 명하기 때문에 가는 분들이 많이 있는 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: They're all places. A lot of people go to these places when they come to Seoul. They meet friends there, and eat there, and can do all kinds of things, though actually I think there are a lot of people who just go to these places because they're famous.

경은: 어딘지 언제 가르쳐 주시려고요.

Kyeong-eun: And you are going to tell me sometime where they are.

현우: 네. 지금 말씀드릴게요. 첫 째.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. I'll tell you now. First.

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

현우: 한국에 여행 오는 분들이 가장 많이 가는 곳이죠.

Hyunwoo: It's the place people traveling to Korea go to the most, of course.

경은: 맞아요. 정말.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Really.

현우: 어디죠

Hyunwoo: Of course, it's where?

경은: 명동!

Kyeong-eun: Myeongdong!

현우: 명동!

Hyunwoo: Myeongdong!

경은: 명동!

Kyeong-eun: Myeongdong!

현우: 명동은 서울 중심에 있어요.

Hyunwoo: Myeongdong is in the heart of Seoul.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그래서 굉장히 찾아가기도 쉽고, 그리고 명동 근처에 호텔도 많이 있고 호텔보다 저렴한 호스텔, 유스 호스텔도 굉장히 많아서 명동에서 머물면서 명동을 구경도 하고 명동에서 쇼핑도 하고 (쇼핑으로 유명하죠) 친구도 만나는 사람들도 많이 있는데, 정작 왜 가는지 잘 모르는 사람들도 많아요.

Hyunwoo: So it's extremely easy to find, and there are a lot of hotels nearby, and more than hotels, there are a whole lot of inexpensive hostels, youth hostels, so while staying in Myeongdong people go sight-seeing there and go shopping there (Yeah, it's famous for the shopping.) and there are a lot of people who meet their friends there, but really there are also a lot people who don't know why anyone goes there.

경은: 그렇죠.

Kyeong-eun: Right.

현우: 그리고 두 번째 장소는 홍대!

Hyunwoo: And the second place is Hongdae!

경은: 홍대. 제가 자주 가는 곳이에요.

Kyeong-eun: Hongdae. It's the place I often go.

현우: 홍대도 유명해요.

Hyunwoo: Hongdae is famous, too.

경은: 아주 유명하죠.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, it's rather famous.

현우: 외국인들 사이에서 “한국에 가면 서울에 가면 뭐 할 거야?”라고 하면 “명동가고 싶고, 홍대가고 싶고.”

Hyunwoo: If you're with foreigners and you ask, “What are you going to do when you go to Korea, when you go to Seoul?” “I want to go to Myeongdong, I want to go to Hongdae.”

경은: 저도 많이 들었어요.

Kyeong-eun: I've heard that a lot, too.

현우: 이런 얘기를 많이 들을 수 있는데, 홍대도 유명하죠, 그리고 또 역시 강남! (강남) 강남! 모르는 사람이 없어요.

Hyunwoo: You might hear that a lot, and Hongdae is famous, too, of course, and also Gangnam! (Gangnam) Gangnam! There isn't a person who doesn't know it.

경은: 절대 없죠.

Kyeong-eun: Not one.

현우: “서울에 오면 꼭 강남에 가고 싶어!” 하는 사람들이 있는데. 홍대, 명동, 강남이 특별하지만 조금 더 이야기를 해 볼 필요가 있다고 생각해요.

Hyunwoo: There are people who say, “When I go to Seoul, I absolutely want to go to Gangnam!” Hongdae, Myeongdong and Gangnam are special, but I think we need to talk about them a little more.

경은: 좋은 생각인 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: I think that's a good idea.

현우: 경은 씨. (네) 우리 그럼 이번 이야기 레슨은 짧게 하면서 명동과 홍대, 강남의 차이점에 대해서 이야기해 보고 경은 씨가 강남에 가면 명동에 가면, 홍대에 가면 뭘 하는지, 그리고 제가 세 군데 가면 뭘 하는지 이야기해 볼까요?

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun—(Yes?) so in this iyagi lesson, speaking briefly, shall we talk about the differences between Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam, and what you do when you go to Gangnam, Myeongdong or Hongdae, and what I do when I go to these three places?

경은: 좋은 생각이에요.

Kyeong-eun: Good idea.

현우: 우선. 처음에 이야기 했던 명동. 명동은 어떤 곳이에요?

Hyunwoo: To begin with, we first mentioned Myeongdong. What kind of place is Myeongdong?

경은: 명동은 가면 일본인들이 굉장히 많아요. 사실. (맞아요)

Kyeong-eun: When you go to Myeongdong there are lots of Japanese people. Actually. (That's right.)

현우: 그래서 명동에서 물건을 사러 페이스 샵, 바디 샵, 아니면 한국 뷰티 (화장품 관련 상품) 그런 가게에 들어가면.

Hyunwoo: So when you go to buy something in Myeongdong and go into stores like face shops, body shops, or Korea Beauty (Cosmetics related products)

경은: 정말 일본인들 많더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: There are really a lot of Japanese people, in my experience.

현우: 일본인들 밖에 없어요.

Hyunwoo: There's nothing but Japanese people.

경은: 맞아요. 진짜 그런 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. It really seems like that.

현우: 그리고 조금 더 걷다보면 중국어도 많이 들을 수 있어요.

Hyunwoo: And if you walk a bit farther, you can hear a lot of Mandarin Chinese, too.

경은: 맞아요. 그리고 거리에서 물건을 팔잖아요. 명동거리에는 가판대가 죽 늘어서 있어요. 그래서 거기서 굉장히 싸게 옷이나 장갑, 모자, 목도리까지 전부 다 살 수 있거든요. 그 분들이 외국어를 굉장히 잘 하세요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. And they sell things in the street, don't they? Myeongdong Street is lined right up with stands. So there you can buy clothes, or gloves, hats, even scarves, all for extremely cheap, you see. They speak foreign languages extremely well.

현우: 맞아요. 물건을 파는 분들이?

Hyunwoo: That's right. The people who sell things?

경은: 네. 물건을 파는 분들이 일본어도 잘 하시고, 중국어도 잘 하시고, 대단하시더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. The salespeople speak Japanese well, and Mandarin well, and it's great.

현우: 제 생각에는 그래서 외국 여행객 분들이 명동에 많이 가지 않을까?

Hyunwoo: So I think, mustn't foreign tourists go to Myeongdong a lot?

경은: 편하게 갈 수 있으니까. (네)

Kyeong-eun: Since they can go there comfortably. (Yeah.)

현우: 명동보다 쇼핑을 더 많이 할 수 있는 곳이 충분히 있는데, 그런 곳들에 가면 한국어만 써야 되니까. (맞아요) 명동이 그래서 편하지 않을까.

Hyunwoo: Since there are plenty of places where you can do more shopping than in Myeongdong, but when you go to those places you have to use only Korean. (That's right.) So I think Myeongdong must be comfortable.

경은: 그리고 그 분들이 외국어를 잘 하시는데, 일본어나 중국어를 많이 써 놓아요. 가격이 얼마인지 그리고 어떻게 살 수 있는지에 대해서 설명이 자세히 쓰여 있기 때문에 외국인들이 많이 가는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: And they speak foreign languages well, so there's a lot written in Japanese or Chinese. I think foreigners go there a lot because explanations of how much the prices are and how you can buy things are written down in detail.

현우: 저는... 쇼핑을 하시려면 명동을 가는 것도 좋다고 생각하는데, 만약에 쇼핑을 하고 싶지 않고 그냥 밥을 먹고 싶고, 친구들하고 만나서 그냥 이야기하고 싶으면 명동은 별로 추천하고 싶지 않아요.

Hyunwoo: For me, if you're going to go shopping, I think going to Myeongdong is good, but I wouldn't want to recommend Myeongdong if maybe you don't want to go shopping and just want to eat or meet and talk with friends.

경은: 저도 그래요. 사실 굉장히 많은 레스토랑이 있어요. 많은 식당들이 있는데 맛이 그렇게 있는 것 같지는 않아요.

Kyeong-eun: Me too. Actually there are tons of restaurants. There are many places to get some food, but I think they aren't that tasty.

현우: 제 생각에는 차라리 홍대가 좋은 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: In my opinion, I think Hongdae would be good instead.

경은: 그리고 명동은 사람이 너무 많잖아요. 항상 사람이 많으니까 레스토랑이나 식당에 가도 항상 기다려야 되고...

Kyeong-eun: And there are so many people in Myeongdong, aren't there? Since there are always a lot of people even though you get to a restaurant or diner you always have to wait and...

현우: 맞아요. 그리고 항상 사람이 있기 때문에 식당들이 그렇게 친절하지 않아요.

Hyunwoo: That's right. And because there are always people, the workers there aren't always so kind.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 지금 눈 앞에 있는 손님들한테 친절하지 않아도, 어차피 손님은 계속 와요. (맞아요) 그렇기 때문에 불친절한 식당들이 굉장히 많은데, 저는 그런 건 좀 안 좋아하거든요.

Hyunwoo: Even though they aren't nice to the customers in front of their eyes at the moment, nonetheless customers keep coming. (That's right.) Because it's like that, there are a lot of diner employees that are mean, and personally I don't really like that kind of thing, you see.

경은: 네. 맞아요. 저도 싫어해요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. That's right. I hate it, too.

현우: 그런 면에서 홍대가 좋은 점은 홍대에 가면 사람이 많지만 명동처럼 많지는 않아요.

Hyunwoo: In that respect, one of the good things about Hongdae is that there are a lot of people there, but not a lot like in Myeongdong.

경은: 그렇게 완전 북적거리진 않아요.

Kyeong-eun: It's not so completely congested.

현우: 그런 대신에 홍대에 있는 식당들은 굉장히 친절한 경향이 있죠.

Hyunwoo: And instead, the workers at diners in Hongdae have a tendency to be extremely kind.

경은: 홍대는 사실 맛집이 많은 걸로 유명해요. 그리고 굉장히 다양한 나라의 음식이 있잖아요. 물론 이태원에도 다양한 나라 음식이 있지만 홍대에도 맛있는 음식이 너무 많은 것 같아요. 그리고 굉장히 친절하죠.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, Hongdae is famous for having a lot of tasty restaurants. And there's food from all sorts of countries, isn't there? Of course, there's various countries' foods in Itaewon, too, but in Hongdae, too, I think there's so much delicious food. And they're extremely kind, like you said.

현우: 그렇죠. 그런데 홍대도 단점이 있어요. (뭐가 있죠?) 홍대에서는 쇼핑을 하기가 조금 어려울 수 있어요.

Hyunwoo: Sure. But Hongdae, too, has its faults. (Like what?) Shopping in Hongdae can be a little difficult.

경은: 요즘에는 근데 물론 명동보다는 정말 못 하지만요, 쇼핑하는 사람들이 많이 늘었어요.

Kyeong-eun: These days at least, but of course you really can't shop like in Myeongdong, but there a lot are more people shopping there.

현우: 옷을 사러 가고 싶을 땐, 홍대 좋아요.

Hyunwoo: When you want to go buy clothes, at least, Hongdae is good.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 좋은데 그 외에 그냥 여행 왔으니까 기념품 사고 싶거나, 그냥 돌아다니면서 구경을 하고 싶으면, 명동이 더 좋을 수 있어요.

Hyunwoo: It's good, but other than that, since you're just traveling, if you want to buy souvenirs, or you just want to walk around and sightsee, Myeongdong could be better.

경은: 기념품을 사거나 화장품, 이런 걸 사려면 명동이 훨씬 좋고요. 홍대는 좀 맛있는 음식 먹으러 가고, 좀 공연 같은 거 많이 하잖아요. 작은 공연장도 많이 있어서 그런 거 보러 가면 좋은 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: And if you want to get souvenirs or cosmetics or this sort of thing, Myeongdong is infinitely better. You go to Hongdae to eat food that's a bit delicious, and they do a lot of sort of performance-like things, don't they? There are a lot of little venues, so I think it's good if you go there to see that kind of thing.

현우: 그래서 요즘처럼 날씨가 추울 때는 별로 안 좋은데, 날씨가 안 추울 때, 따뜻한 여름이나 봄, 가을에 서울에 와서 홍대에 간 다음에 밥을 먹고, 차를 마시고, 술을 마시고, 친구들을 만나서 또 디저트를 먹고 이렇게 하기에는 홍대가 최고예요.

Hyunwoo: So it's not particularly good when the weather's cold like it is these days, but when it isn't cold, having come to Seoul in the warm summer, or spring or fall, after going to Hongdae, when it comes to eating, and drinking tea, and drinking alcohol, meeting with friends and also eating desert, Hongdae is the best.

경은: 맞아요. 그리고 홍대 놀이터 같은 데에 가면, 밤이 되면, 공연도 많이 하거든요. 그냥 밖에서 공연도 많이 하기 때문에 친구들이랑 놀러 가기에는 되게 좋은 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. And if you go to playground-type places in Hongdae, when it's night, they have a lot of performances, you see. Because there are a lot of performances too just outside there, I think it's really great to go hang out there with friends.

현우: 그런데 그냥 만날 친구가 별로 없고, 혼자 왔고, 그냥 돌아다니기에는 홍대는 재미가 없어요.

Hyunwoo: But just walking about without friends to meet by yourself, Hongdae's boring.

경은: 그렇죠. 재미없죠.

Kyeong-eun: Right. Of course.

현우: 그럴 때에는 차라리 명동에 가서 사람들 사이를 돌아다니면서 구경도 하고, 간단한 기념품도 사고, 그렇게 하기에는 명동이 좋겠죠? 명동하고 비슷한 곳을 찾으려면 동대문도 괜찮고, 아니면 타임 스퀘어나, 코엑스 같은 곳에 가면.

Hyunwoo: At those times, instead, going to Myeongdong and sightseeing and buying simple souvenirs, while walking around among people, Myeongdong would be good, right? If you want to find somewhere similar to Myeongdong, Dongdaemun is okay, or if you go somewhere like Time Square, or Coex.

경은: 영등포에 있는 타임 스퀘어, 그리고

Kyeong-eun: The Time Square in Yeongdeungpo, and

현우: 강남 삼성역에 있는 코엑스 몰에 가면 여러 가지 가게들도 볼 수 있고 좋아요. 특별한 계획이 없을 때 갈 수 있는 곳은 명동. 친구들하고 맛있는 걸 찾아서 먹으러 갈 때는 홍대.

Hyunwoo: If you go to the Coex mall at Gangnam Samsung Station, you can see various stores, too, and it's nice. You can go to Myeongdong when you don't have any special plans. Hongdae when you go to eat something delicious you've found with friends.

경은: 그런데, 홍대를 갈 때에는 좀 검색을 해서 가는 게 좋은 것 같아요. 아무집이나 그냥 들어가면 사실 맛없는 곳도 많거든요.

Kyeong-eun: But, when you go to Hongdae, I think it'd be good if you went after searching a bit. If you just go anywhere, actually there are a lot of places, too, that aren't good, you know.

현우: 맞아요. 실패할 수도 있어요.

Hyunwoo: That's right. You could be disappointed.

경은: 역 근처에는 사실 맛이 없어요. 역 근처 가게들은 근데 홍대역에서 조금 떨어져 있어도 그런 맛있는 집들이 많이 있기 때문에 검색을 해서 가는 게 좋은 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Near the station actually it's not delicious. The stores near the station, but just a little removed from Hongdae Station, because there are a lot of those delicious places, I think it'd be good if you went after doing a search.

현우: 경은 씨, 그러면 홍대하고 명동에 대해서 이야기 했는데, 강남은 어때요?

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun—so we've talked about Hongdae and Myeongdong, but what's Gangnam like?

경은: 강남은... 쇼핑하기 좋은 것 같아요. 강남도. (그래요?) 네. 쇼핑하기 좋고 가게들 많이 있잖아요. 근데, 강남도 약간 홍대처럼 친구들이랑 같이 가서 맛있는 것 먹고, 술집이나 예쁜 카페들 많으니까 그렇게 찾아서 친구들이랑 어울리는 데에도 좋은 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Gangnam... I think it's good for shopping. Gangnam, too. (Oh yeah?) Yeah. It's good for shopping, and there are a lot of stores, aren't there? But like Hongdae, I think it's good as a place to spend time with friends, having gone there together and looked around, and eating something tasty and since there are a lot of cozy cafes and bars.

현우: 그런데 여러분이 기억하셔야 될 것은 강남도 명동하고 좀 비슷해서 어차피 사람들이 많이 오기 때문에 여러분이 안 간다고 해서 슬퍼할 술집이 없어요.(맞아요) 그래서 조금은 불친절할 수도 있어요.

Hyunwoo: But what you'll all have to remember is: in Gangnam, too, a bit like Myeongdong, because there a lot of people come regardless, there isn't any bar that will be sad if you say you won't go. (That's right.) So they can be a bit mean.

경은: 그리고 조금 비싸죠. 강남은.

Kyeong-eun: And it's a little expensive, of course. Gangnam.

현우: 비싸요. 비싸고 뭐랄까 사람도 많고, (사람 정말 많은 것 같아요.) 그래서 저는 개인적으로 강남에 거의 안 가는데. 강남이 한강 남쪽, 한강 이남에서는, 놀기에는 교통이 가장 편리해요.

Hyunwoo: It's expensive. Expensive, and—what should I say?—there are a lot of people, (I think there are really a lot of people.) so for me, personally, I hardly ever go to Gangnam, but Gangnam is south of the Han River, and when it comes to hanging out, getting around south of the Han River is the most convenient.

경은: 2호선 타고 가면 되니까.

Kyeong-eun: Since you can take Line 2.

현우: 그리고 친구들하고 모일 때, 만약에 친구들이 성남, 잠실, 이런 쪽에서 사는 친구들이 많으면 (강남에서 주로 보죠.) 맞아요. 홍대 쪽으로 오라고하면, 한 시간 반 정도 걸리기 때문에 너무 미안하잖아요. 그리고 강남에서 서울 근처에 있는 경기도 수원, 용인, 인천, 성남, 이런 쪽으로 가는 버스들이 많이 있어요.

Hyunwoo: And when you meet with friends, if you have a lot of friends who live in Seongnam, Jamsil and that direction, (You mainly meet in Gangnam, of course.) That's right. If you tell them to come toward Hongdae, you feel really sorry, don't you? Because it takes as much as an hour and a half. And there are a lot of buses from Gangnam to Gyeonggido Suwon, Yongin, Incheon, Seongnam, and that direction near Seoul.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그래서 교통이 편리해서 사람들이 많이 가는 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: So I think a lot of people go there because commuting is convenient.

경은: 맞아요. 교통이 많이 편리하죠.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. It's very convenient.

현우: 그래서 강남에 가면 저는 주로 술을 마시러 가거나 아니면 한 이십 명, 삼십 명정도가 모이는 그런 자리 있잖아요. 동창회, (송년회) 송년회, 생일파티 이런 모임이 있을 때는 강남에 가는데, 그 외에 쇼핑을 하러 가지도 않고, 밥을 먹으러 가지도 않고, 그런 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: So when I go to Gangnam, I go mainly to have a few drinks, or there are situations when you meet as many as about twenty or thirty people, aren't there? Alumni meetings, (End-of-the-year parties) end-of-the-year parties, birthday parties, when there are these kinds of gatherings, we go to Gangnam, but other than that, I don't go there to go shopping, or to eat, I guess.

경은: 네. 강남 쪽에서 사는 사람들은 뭐 쇼핑이나 그런 근처에 사는 사람들이 쇼핑이나 밥 먹으러 자주 가니까요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Since people who live around Gangnam, like, shopping, or, like, people who live near there go there often to eat or shop.

현우: 그렇죠. 그러면 지금까지 명동, 홍대, 강남에 대해서 이야기를 해봤는데, 쇼핑을 하시려면 명동, 그리고 맛있는 곳을 찾아 가시려면 홍대 또는 강남 그리고 만약 그냥 혼자 걸어 다니고 싶으면 명동. 이렇게 추천을 해드리고 싶어요.

Hyunwoo: Sure. So up until now we've been talking about Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam, and if you intend to shop: Myeongdong, and if you want to go find a nice place to eat: Hongdae, and also Gangnam, and if you just want to walk around by yourself: Myeongdong. I'd like to recommend them to you as such.

경은: 분위기가 조금씩 다 다르니까요 시간이 많으면 세 군데 다 가셔도 좋을 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Since the atmosphere is all a little different. If you have a lot of time, I think it'd be good even if you went to all three places.

현우: 맞아요. 그러면 여러분, 여러분은 혹시 세 군데 중에서 어디가 가장 마음에 드는지 코멘트로 알려 주세요.
