현우: 경은 씨. 우리 지금 어디에 있죠?

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun—where are we now?

경은: 지금 버스 안에 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: Now we're on a bus.

현우: 아마 버스 안에서 녹음하는 사람은 거의 없을 거예요.

Hyunwoo: The number of people who make recordings on a bus is probably next to none.

경은: 좀 창피한데요.

Kyeong-eun: It's a little embarrassing.

현우: 좀 특별하죠.

Hyunwoo: It's a little special, of course.

경은: 네. 특별하죠.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, it's special, sure.

현우: 특별한 경험인데, 경은 씨, 오늘 말고 평소에 버스 자주 타세요?

Hyunwoo: It's a special experience, but Kyeong-eun—besides today, do you normally often ride the bus?

경은: 저는 출근할 때마다, 퇴근할 때마다 버스를 타요.

Kyeong-eun: Every time I go to or come from work I ride the bus.

현우: 그래요? 하루에 두 번 이상 타는 거네요.

Hyunwoo: Oh yeah? Wow, so you ride the bus more than twice a day.

경은: 네. 꼭 하루에 두 번 이상은 타죠.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I definitely ride it more than twice a day, of course.

현우: 그러면 출근할 때, 그리고 퇴근할 때, 보통 버스를 몇 분 정도 타요?

Hyunwoo: In that case, when you go to work, and when you leave work, about how many minutes do you ride?

경은: 2~30분?

Kyeong-eun: Twenty to thirty minutes?

현우: 2~30분.

Hyunwoo: Twenty to thirty minutes.

경은: 네. 그 정도 타는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I think I ride about that much.

현우: 한번에 2~30분 타는 거예요?

Hyunwoo: Each time it's 20-30 minutes that you ride.

경은: 네. 그렇죠.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Sure.

현우: 그래요. 그러면 하루에 최소한 한 시간 가까이 버스 위에서 보내는 건데.

Hyunwoo: Right. So that means you spend at least one hour a day on top of a bus.

경은: 버스 안에서 보내는 거죠.

Kyeong-eun: I spend it on the bus, of course.

현우: 버스 위에 타면 좀 위험하겠군요.

Hyunwoo: Ah, if you rode on top of the bus, it'd be a bit dangerous.

경은: 큰일 나죠.

Kyeong-eun: It'd be a serious problem, of course.

현우: 경은 씨, 그러면 버스를 타면 일단 어때요?

Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun—so when you ride the bus, first of all, how is it?

경은: 저는 사실은 별로 안 좋아해요 버스 타는 거.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, I don't care for it much. Riding the bus.

현우: 그래요?

Hyunwoo: Oh yeah?

경은: 왜냐하면 제가 좀 멀미가 심해서. 매일 버스를 타니까 매일 멀미를 하진 않지만, 버스 안에서는 아무것도 못해요. 그냥 음악만 들을 수 있어요. 근데 보면 버스에서 책을 읽거나, 아니면 영화를 보거나, 스마트 폰으로 여러 가지를 할 수 있잖아요? 사실은 근데 저는 멀미가 심해서 머리가 아프고, 속이 안 좋고 그래서 아무것도 못해요.

Kyeong-eun: Because I get motion sickness a bit severely. Since I ride the bus everyday, I don't get motion-sick everyday, but I can't do anything on the bus. I can only listen to music. But if you look at it, on the bus you can read a book or watch a movie or do various things with a smart phone, can't you? Actually, but for me, because my motion sickness is severe, because I get a headache, and feel sick, I can't do anything.

현우: 저는 버스 위에서, 버스 안에서 뭘 해도 괜찮은데, 어떤 사람들은 버스에서 책을 읽으면 눈에 너무 힘이 들어가거나, 집중을 해야 돼서 멀미가 난다고 하더라고요. 저는 지금까지 괜찮았던 것 같고 저는 버스가 좋은데, 지하철에 비해서 바깥도 내다볼 수 있고 그리고 창문 열면 바람도 쐴 수 있고 좋은데, 저는 버스 제일 싫은 점이 기다려야 되는 것? 지하철은 최소한 출·퇴근 시간에는 2~3분에 한 대, 그리고 평소에는 5분에 한 대 정도씩 오잖아요. 그런데 버스는 잘못하면 30분에 한 대, 1시간에 한 대씩 오는 버스도 있잖아요.

Hyunwoo: For me, I can do things on top of the bus, on the bus, but I've heard some people say that when they read a book on the bus, because you have to look at it so closely or concentrate so much you get motion-sick. Up until now I guess I've been fine, so I like the bus, and comparing it with the subway, it's nice that you can look outside, and if you open the window you can enjoy the wind, but the thing I hate most about the bus is, waiting for it? But in the subway, during rush hour a train comes every 2-3 minutes, and ordinarily a train comes every 5 minutes, doesn't it? But if the bus has a problem: one bus in thirty minutes. There are buses that come once every hour, too, aren't there?

경은: 차가 막히면 30분에 한 대 씩 올 때도 있는데, 그러면 정말 화가 나요.

Kyeong-eun: If the roads are blocked up, there are times when a bus comes every 30 minutes, and in that case I get really angry.

현우: 정말, 정말 힘들죠. 특히 겨울에.

Hyunwoo: It's really, really hard. Especially in the winter.

경은: 겨울에 힘들죠. 추운데 꼭 밖에서 기다려야 되니까. 좀 버스 정류장을 막아 놓을 수 없나요?

Kyeong-eun: It's hard in the winter, of course. Since it's cold but you absolutely have to wait outside. Couldn't they just enclose the bus stop?

현우: 따뜻하게.

Hyunwoo: Nice and warm.

경은: 네. 따뜻하게. 여름에는 좀 시원하고 겨울에는 따뜻하게.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Nice and warm. In the summer nice and cool and the winter nice and warm.

현우: 그래도 예전보단 나아진 게, 버스 정류장이 이제는 금연이잖아요.

Hyunwoo: Still, something that's better than it used to be, bus stops are non-smoking nowadays, aren't they?

경은: 네. 너무 좋아요. 저는.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. It's so great. For me.

현우: 옛날에는 버스 정류장에서 담배를 피우는 사람들이 많아서, 담배 안 피우는 사람들은 그게 굉장히 힘들었는데 지금은 담배를 피울 수 없으니까, 최소한 버스 매연만 마시면 되요.

Hyunwoo: Because there used to be a lot of people who smoked at the bus stop, that was really hard for people who didn't smoke, but since now you can't smoke, you just have to inhale the bus fumes.

경은: 그리고 더 좋아진 거 있잖아요. 예전에는 버스가 언제 오는지 몰라서 계속 내 버스가 오는지, 안 오는지 살펴봐야 했었는데, 이제는 버스가 몇 분 후에 오는지 알려주는 그런 LED 창이 생겼죠.

Kyeong-eun: And there's something that's gotten better, isn't there? Before, because you didn't know when the bus would come, you had to to keep looking to see if your bus was coming, but now there's an LED display letting you know how many minutes later the bus is coming, of course.

현우: 맞아요. 다 있는 건 아닌데, 좀 큰 정류장 아니면 사람들이 많이 지나다니는 정류장에 가면 지금 타고 싶은, 예를 들어서 205번 버스가 몇 번 정류장 앞을 지나고 있는지, 그리고 몇 분 후에 도착하는지를 알려줘요.

Hyunwoo: That's right. It's not that they all have them, but if you go to bus stops that are a bit big, or that have a lot of people passing through, now it lets you know what stop the bus you want to ride, for example, what stop the 205 is passing in front of, and how many minutes later it will arrive.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그래서 “15분 후에 도착한다.” 그러면 어디 잠깐 갔다 올 수 있고, 그리고 굉장히 정확한 거 같아요.

Hyunwoo: So if it says, “It arrives in 15 minutes,” you can go somewhere quick, and I think it's extremely accurate.

경은: 정말 좋아졌어요.

Kyeong-eun: It's really gotten good.

현우: 요즘에 버스를 한국에서 한 번 타면 얼마죠?

Hyunwoo: These days in Korea if you ride the bus once, how much is it again?

경은: 1000원이요.

Kyeong-eun: It's 1000 won.

현우: 1000원이죠.

Hyunwoo: It's 1000 won, of course.

경은: 네. 1000원이요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. It's 1000 won.

현우: 1000원이고. 교통카드를 만들면 900원.

Hyunwoo: It's 1000 won, and if you make a transportation card, it's 900 won.

경은: 900원, 그리고 환승 가능하니까 더 싸게 되죠.

Kyeong-eun: Nine hundred won, and since you can transfer, it gets cheaper, of course.

현우: 버스에서 내려서 지하철을 탈 수도 있고, 또 버스에서 내려서 다른 버스를 탈 수도 있고.

Hyunwoo: After getting off the bus, you can ride the subway, too, and after getting of the bus, you can also ride another bus, too.

경은: 네. 30분 이내에만 다른 버스를 타면 그냥 무료예요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. If it's within 30 minutes, when you ride another bus it's just free.

현우: 맞아요. 근데 경은 씨. 버스를 타면 주로 앉아서 갈 수 있어요?

Hyunwoo: That's right. But Kyeong-eun—when you ride the bus, for the most part, can you ride while seated?

경은: 저는 버스를 탈 때 항상 출근 시간 아니면, 퇴근 시간에 타잖아요. 그러니까 사람들이 항상 많아요. 그래서 제가 버스를 별로 안 좋아하기도 하는데, 사람이 많으면 서서 가야 되는데 서서 갈 때도 정말 사람이 많으 붙잡을 때도 없고 너무 힘들어요. 몸도 막 움직이고 가방도 있는데 어떻게 할 수도 없는 거예요.

Kyeong-eun: When I ride the bus, I always ride during the morning or evening rush hour, don't I? So there are always a lot of people. So I don't really care for the bus, and if there are a lot of people you have to ride standing, and when you ride standing if there's really a lot of people there aren't any handles to grab, too, and it's so hard. Your body is is moving all around and you have your bag, too, and there's nothing you can do.

현우: 팔 힘이 세지겠어요.

Hyunwoo: Your arms must get stronger.

경은: 맞아요. 팔 힘도 세지고 그런 뭐랄까 눈치도 빨라져서 금방 일어날 수 있는 그런 사람들이 보여요. 그 앞에 딱 가서, 서있고 막 그래요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Your arms get stronger and, like—what should I say?—you keep your eyes peeled to see if there are people who are going to get up soon. You get right in front of that person and stand there, just like that.

현우: 예를 들어서 “어디 고등학교가 세 정거장 앞에 나온다.” 그러면 고등학생 앞에 가서 서 있고 (맞아요. 딱 그래요.) 보통 버스를 타는 거는 어느 나라에 가도 비슷한 거 같은데 혹시 다른 곳도 있을지 모르니까 한국에서 버스 타는 거에 대해서 순서를 이야기 해 볼까요?

Hyunwoo: For example, if it's that three stops later there's some high school, you go and stand in front of a high school student. (That's right. It's just like that.) I think it's usually similar riding the bus no matter which country you go to, but since we don't know if it might be different somewhere else, shall we talk about the procedures riding the bus in Korea?

경은: 좋은 생각인데요.

Kyeong-eun: Good idea.

현우: 먼저 버스를 기다릴 때, 어떻게 기다리죠?

Hyunwoo: First off, when you wait for the bus, how do you wait for it, again?

경은: 서서 기다리죠.

Kyeong-eun: You stand there, of course.

현우: 그냥 기다려요.

Hyunwoo: You just wait.

경은: 버스 정류장에서.

Kyeong-eun: At the bus stop.

현우: 기다리다가 버스가 오면

Hyunwoo: While you're waiting, when the bus comes

경은: 교통 카드를 꺼내거나, 돈을 꺼내서 준비를 하죠.

Kyeong-eun: You take out your transportation card or money and get ready, of course.

현우: 준비를 한 다음에 버스가 서고, 앞문이 열리면 남들보다 빨리

Hyunwoo: After getting ready, the bus stops and when the front door opens, and faster than the others...

경은: 올라타는 거죠.

Kyeong-eun: ...you get on, of course.

현우: 줄을 서서 올라가는 거죠. 버스에.

Hyunwoo: After standing in line, you get on, of course. The bus.

경은: 그리고.

Kyeong-eun: And.

현우: 버스에 올라타고, 이제 올라가서 돈을 내거나 교통카드를 찍어요.

Hyunwoo: You get on the bus, and now having gotten on, you pay or scan your transportation card.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그리고

Hyunwoo: And

경은: 그리고 빨리 살펴본 다음에 자리를 맡아요.

Kyeong-eun: And after glancing around real quick you grab a seat.

현우: 자리가 없으면 서 있어요.

Hyunwoo: If there aren't any seats, you stand.

경은: 서 있어야 되요. 근데 보통 한국은 버스에 앞부분에는 자리가 많이 없어요. 그리고 혼자 앉을 수 있는 자리고 보통 노약자석이 많죠. 근데 뒷자리에는 두 명 씩 앉을 수 있고 그리고 앞에 부분이 노약자석이다 보니까 뒤에는 그냥 편하게 아무나 앉는 그런 자리가 많아요.

Kyeong-eun: You have to stand. But in Korea there aren't a lot of seats at the front of the bus. And they are the seats you can sit in alone and usually there are a lot of seats for the elderly and disabled, of course. But in the back, they seat two people each, and since the front is seats for the elderly and disabled, in the back there are a lot of seats where anyone can just sit comfortably.

현우: 그리고 자리가 없으면 서서 간 다음에 자기가 가고 싶은 곳이 가까워지면 뭘 해야 되죠?

Hyunwoo: And if there aren't any seats, after riding standing, when you get close to the place you want to go, what do you have to do?

경은: 벨을 눌러야 되죠.

Kyeong-eun: You have to ring the bell, of course.

현우: 어떤 데는 그냥 벨이라고 쓰여 있고, 또 어떤 데는 “부자”라고 쓰여 있어요.

Hyunwoo: In some places, it just says bell, and other places, it says “buja.”

경은: “부자”라고 쓰여 있는 거는 한 번도 못 봤는데요?

Kyeong-eun: I've never seen something that says “buja.”

현우: 지방에는 “부자”라고 쓰여 있어요. “버저(buzzer)”라는 영어를 가지고 “부저”라고 쓴 것도 있고, “부자”라고 쓴 곳도 있는데 그래서 “부자를 누르면 다음 정거장에서 저 내립니다.” 라고 표시를 하는 거잖아요.

Hyunwoo: Outside of Seoul it says “buja.” There are places that use “beojeo (buzzer)” from English, and there are places that say “buja,” too, and so it indicates that if you push the buzzer, you're getting off at the next stop.

경은: 조심해야 되요. 벨을 안 누르면 안 설 때도 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: You have to be careful. If you don't push the buzzer, sometimes it doesn't stop.

현우: 맞아요.

Hyunwoo: That's right.

경은: 모든 정거장에 버스가 멈추는 게 아니라요, 벨을 눌러야지 세워 주는 아저씨들이 많아요. 그래서 저는 한 번은 일곱 명이 뒷문에서 내리려고 기다리고 있었어요, 서서. 그랬는데 일곱 명 모두 벨을 안 누른 거예요. 너무 신기하게. 정말 다들 딴 생각을 하고 있었나 봐요. 아니면 ‘누군가 눌렀겠지’ 라고 생각을 했던 것 같아요. 집을 지나쳐서 버스가 가는 거예요. 일곱 명 모두 다 너무 깜짝 놀라서 빨리 막 벨을 눌렀는데 이미 버스가 지나가서 일곱 명 모두 다 다음 정거장에서 내렸어요.

Kyeong-eun: The bus doesn't stop at every bus stop, and there are a lot of drivers who only stop if you push the buzzer. So for me, once there were 7 people standing by the back door, waiting to get off. But none of the 7 people rang the bell. So amazingly. I guess they really were all thinking about something else. Or I guess they thought, “Someone must have pushed the button.” So the bus went on past their house. The seven people were all so surprised and quickly pushed the buzzer but the bus had already gone past, so the seven people all got off at the next stop.

현우: 버스 기사 아저씨는 또는 아줌마는 버스 정류장에서 내려 주면 사실은 본인이 곤란해질 수가 있어요. 그러니까 규칙을 지켜서 정류장에서만 내려 주려는 경향이 있으니까. 가끔씩 기사 분하고 싸울 때가 있어요.

Hyunwoo: When the bus driver lets you off at the bus stop, it can actually be difficult for a passenger. Since they have a tendency, in keeping with the rules, to just let you off at the bus stop. Sometimes, there are times when they fight with the drivers.

경은: 그리고 신호등에 걸려 있으면 “여기 내려주세요.” 이러는 분들이 있어서, 그런데 절대 안 되죠. 그거는. 위험하니까.

Kyeong-eun: And when they're stuck at a light, there are people who say, “Please let me off here,” but you can't do that. Since it's dangerous.

현우: 하면 안 되죠. 지금 경은 씨하고 얘기를 해 보니까 버스를 타는 것이 다른 나라하고 크게 다를 건 없을 것 같지만, 아마 요금이 다를 것 같고, 그리고 노약자석이 있는지 없는지 궁금하기도 하고, 또 여러분은, 저희 청취자 여러분들은 버스를 주로 타는 지 아니면 그냥 운전을 하는지 아니면 그냥 저처럼 걸어 다니는지 아니면 지하철. 저는 버스는 거의 안 타고, 어디 갈 때는 지하철을 타거나 택시를 타는데 여러분은 어떻게 하는 지 궁금한데요?

Hyunwoo: You can't do that, of course. Now that I've talked with Kyeong-eun, it seems like there won't be any big differences riding the bus in other countries, but I think the fare will probably be different, and I'm curious whether there are seats for the elderly and disabled, and also, everyone, whether you, our listeners mainly ride the bus or whether you just drive or whether you just walk everywhere like me, or use the subway. I almost never ride the bus, and when I go somewhere I ride the subway or take a taxi, but I'm curious what you all do.

경은: 알겠어요. 빨리 내려요.

Kyeong-eun: Okay. Let's get off, quick.

현우: 아니에요. 제가 키 크니까 제가 누를게요.

Hyunwoo: No. Since I'm tall, I'll push it.

경은: 빨리 눌러요.
