경은: 우리 뭐에 대해서 이야기할까요?

Kyeong-eun: What shall we talk about?

석진: 오늘은 “오디션 프로그램”?

Seokjin: Today is TV talent programs?

경은: 오디션 프로그램.

Kyeong-eun: TV talent programs.

석진: 누나. 요즘 “위대한 탄생” (네) 아시죠?

Seokjin: Kyeong-eun, you know the show that's on called “Star Audition”? (Yes.)

경은: 네. 알아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. I know it.

석진: 누나 되게 많이 좋아했다고 그러던데.

Seokjin: I recall you saying that you really liked it a lot.

경은: 저요?

Kyeong-eun: Me?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yep.

경은: 저 “위대한 탄생” 딱 한 번 봤는데.

Kyeong-eun: I've only seen “Star Audition” once.

석진: 딱 한 번 봤어요? 그러면 “슈퍼스타 K”는 봤어요?

Seokjin: You've only seen it once? In that case, have you seen “Superstar K”?

경은: “슈퍼스타 K”는 사실 한 번도 못 봤어요.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, I've never seen “Superstar K.”

석진: 그래요? 좋아할 줄 알았는데...

Seokjin: Really? I thought you'd like it...

경은: 저는 모르겠어요. 한 번 밖에 못 봤는데. 석진 씨, 지금 한국에 오디션 프로그램이 굉장히 인기가 많잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: I don't know. I haven't seen it more than once. Seokjin, nowadays talent programs are extremely popular in Korea, aren't they?

석진: 네. 요즘 들어서 되게 인기가 많아진 것 같아요.

Seokjin: Yeah. Lately they seem to have become very popular.

경은: 어떤 프로그램이 있죠?

Kyeong-eun: What shows are there, again?

석진: 가장 큰 게, “슈퍼스타 K”가 있고요, 얼마 전에 끝났죠, “위대한 탄생” 있고요, 요즘에 또 하 고 있는 게 “코리아 갓 탤런트”.

Seokjin: There's the biggest one, “Superstar K,” which finished a little while ago, and there's “Star Audition,” and also these days they're showing “Korea Got Talent.”

경은: 앞에 말한 두 개는 전부 가수를 뽑는 거죠? 노래 실력을 뽐내는 그런 오디션 프로그램이에 요.

Kyeong-eun: The first two you said are all shows that find a singer, right? They're talent programs that show off one's singing ability.

석진: 네. 맞습니다.

Seokjin: Yeah, that's right.

경은: 그리고 나중에 말한 (코리아 갓 탤런트) 그거도 똑같이 가수를 뽑는 그런 프로그램인가요?

Kyeong-eun: And the last one (Korea Got Talent), is it also the same kind of program that selects singers?

석진: 아니에요. 거기에 나온 사람들을 보면 장기 자랑하는 사람들도 되게 많고요, 어제 제가 잠깐 봤는데 비보이들이 나와서 춤도 추고 그랬어요.

Seokjin: No, it isn't. If you watch the people on that show, there are also a lot of people who are proud of their special talents, and the one I saw a little of yesterday had b-boys on it dancing.

경은: 정말요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yep.

경은: 저는 사실 그런 프로그램들을 한 번도 보지는 못했는데, (왜요?) 모르겠어요. 시간이 안 돼서 못 봤어요. 근데 너무 인기가 많아서, 정말 많은 사람들이 보더라고요. 그리고 유튜브 동영상으로도 많이 이렇게 돌아다니잖아요. 그래서 그런 유튜브 동영상을 많이 봤어요. 화제가 된 사람들, 노래를 정말 잘 하는 사람들이거나, 아니면 사연이 특별한 사람들이 있잖아요. 그런 사람들에 유튜브 동영상은 많이 봤어요.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, I've never once seen that kind of program. (Why?) I don't know. I didn't have time. But because it's so popular, a whole lot of people seem to watch it. And their videos are circulating a lot on YouTube, aren't they? So I've seen a lot of those YouTube videos. There are people you hear about lately, people who sing really well, or people with special stories, aren't there? I've seen a lot of YouTube videos about those sorts of people.

석진: 그럼, 예전에 “폴 포츠” 기억나시죠?

Seokjin: So, you remember Paul Potts from back when, right?

경은: 네. 기억나요.

Kyeong-eun: Yes, I remember.

석진: 그 분이 원래 휴대폰을 파는 사람이었는데, 거기 나와서 아주 일약 스타가 됐었잖아요.

Seokjin: He was originally a cellphone salesman, but after appearing there he became a big star overnight.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

석진: 그런 감동적인 이야기들이 있어서 좋은 것 같은데.

Seokjin: I think it's good that there are touching stories, like that.

경은: 근데 한국에도 그런 감동적인 스토리를 가진 그런 사람들이 굉장히 많잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: But there are quite a lot of people in Korea who have those kinds of touching stories.

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yeah.

경은: 항상 모든 오디션 프로그램에 한 명씩은 꼭 있었던 것 같아요. 그렇지 않나요?

Kyeong-eun: I guess there always must have been one for each talent program. Don't you think?

석진: 이 세상엔 사람들이 참 많으니까요.

Seokjin: Since there are so many people in the world.

경은: 맞아요. 근데 이렇게 오디션 프로그램이 많이 생기는 거에 대해서 석진 씨는 어떻게 생각하세요?

Kyeong-eun: That's right. But what do you think about all of these talent programs popping up?

석진: 그런 잘 되는 사람들을 보면 저는 참 좋아요. 감동도 있고, 보는 것도 참 좋고, 나중에 저런 사람들처럼 노력을 해야겠다는 생각도 하는데, 그냥 TV에 나오기 위해서 나오는 사람들 있잖아요.

Seokjin: I really like to see people doing so well like that. It's moving, it's great to watch, I even think that later I have to try like those people did. There are people who come out just to be on TV, aren't there?

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yes.

석진: 자기가 그냥 가지고 있는 장기를 보여주기 위해서 TV에 나왔는데, 실제로 보면 되게 이상하고. 예를 들면, 어제 보디빌더가 나왔어요. 보디빌더가 몸에 기름을 다 바르고 춤을 추는데 제가 봐도, “저건 아니다.” 싶고, 그런 것도 있었고, 할아버지가 나와서 목에다 훌라우프를 돌리는 그런 묘기를 부렸는데 너무 안쓰럽고, 그냥 “좋다.”라는 느낌은 별로 들지 않았어요. 약간 “좀 이상하다.”라는 생각이 좀 들었었어요.

Seokjin: They appeared on TV just to show you their talents, but to really see it is very strange. For example, yesterday there was a bodybuilder. The bodybuilder had smeared oil all over his body and was dancing, but when I saw it I thought, “That's not right,” there was that sorta thing, and an old man come on and performed the kind of stunt where he hula hooped with his neck, but I felt so uneasy. I didn't really have the feeling that is was just “nice.” I'd kinda thought “This is a bit strange.”

경은: 저는. 오디션 프로그램 정말 많잖아요. 사실 일반인들이 그렇게 가수가 되고 싶지만, 어떻게 가수가 되는지 모르겠고, 그리고 뭔가를 더 열심히 하고 싶고, 뭔가를 잘하고 싶지만 어떻게 해야 될지를 모르는 사람들을 위해서 그런 프로그램이 존재하는 건 굉장히 좋은 것 같아요. “나도 뭔가 더 나은 사람이 될 수 있다.”, “나도 그런 기회를 가질 수 있다.”이런 장소를 마련해 주는 거잖아요. 그래서 그런 오디션 프로그램이 좋다고는 생각은 하는데, 요즘에는 정말 너무 많잖아요. 모든 방송사마다 그런 오디션 프로그램을 경쟁적으로 하는 것 같아요. 인기가 많으니까. 그래서 자꾸 오디션 프로그램들이 만들어지니까 그거는 좀 별로인 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: There are a lot of talent programs, aren't there? Actually, regular people want to become singers, but they don't know how, and they want to try harder to do something, they want to do something well, but they don't know what they should do, and the fact that such a program exists for people like this is extremely good, I think. “I, too, want to become a little better person at something,” “I have that opportunity, too,” it gives us these kinds of opportunities, too, doesn't it? So I think these talent programs are good, but these days there are too many, aren't there? It seems like every since TV company is competing with one of these shows. Since they're popular. Since these new shows keep being made, it doesn't seem all that great.

석진: 그런 프로그램을 보면 빠질 수 없는 게 심사위원이에요. 거기 보면 또 약간 독설이라고 하죠? 말을 심하게 좀 안 좋게 하는 사람들이 꼭 있어요. 그래서 그런 사람들이 되게 단점을 심하게 얘기하면 우는 사람도 있고.

Seokjin: When you watch those shows, there's always the unavoidable judges. When you see them there, they have a bit of a sharp tongue, right? There are always people who speak a bit severely unkindly. So if those people talk real severely about someone's faults, there are even people who cry.

경은: 그런 프로그램이 인기가 많다 보니까, 일부러 좀 설정을 하는 것 같지 않아요? 그런 것도.

Kyeong-eun: Since those programs are popular, doesn't it seem like they're intentionally made that way? Even that.

석진: 제 생각도 좀 그런 것 같아요.

Seokjin: I think it seems that way, too.

경은: 꼭 항상 한 사람씩 나쁜 말을 하는 사람이 있고, (맞아요.) 항상 한 사람은 좋은 말만 하는 사람이 있고, 그런 식으로 심사위원이 항상 구성이 되잖아요. 너무 그래서 저는 오디션 프로그램들이 비슷한 것 같아요. 너무 똑같아서 “굳이 볼 필요가 있나?” 이런 생각도 들어요.

Kyeong-eun: There's always one person each who says the bad stuff, (That's right.) and one person who says the good stuff, the judges are always composed in that way, aren't they? Since it's always like that, talent programs seem the same to me. Since they're so exactly the same, I think, “Do I really need to watch them?”

석진: 제가 봐도 잘 불렀는데, 뭐가 그리 단점이 저렇게 많은가 싶기도 하고. 만약에 누나가 심사위원이면 누나는 어떤 식으로 말씀을 하실 것 같아요?

Seokjin: When I watch, the contestants seemed to have sung well, but to the judges there it seems like they have a lot of faults like that. If you were a judge, what do you think you'd say?

경은: 저는 좋은 점을 말할 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: I think I'd talk about their good points.

석진: “음... 좋았고요, 저는 합격입니다.” 이렇게?

Seokjin: “Um... It was good, and I say you've passed.” Like this?

경은: 불합격인 사람한테도 굳이 그 사람한테 상처를 줄 필요는 없잖아요. 그 사람한테 평생 그 말이 상처가 될 수도 있는데, 굳이 저는 안 할 것 같아요. 그렇게 상처 주고 싶지 않아서.

Kyeong-eun: Even to the people who didn't pass, there's no real reason to hurt that person, is there? That person could even be scarred for life by what you say, but I don't particularly think I'd do it. Because I don't want to hurt anyone like that.

석진: 저는 그래도 자신이 잘 모르는 단점을 그렇게 콕 집어주는 사람은 미래를 봐서 더 좋은 것 같아요.

Seokjin: I agree, but I think it's better for the person picking out someone's flaws—that they don't know they have—to speak after thinking about the consequences.

경은: 맞아요. 제가 그 역할을 하고 싶진 않은 거죠.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I don't want to play that role, of course.

석진: 맞아요. 누나는 착하니까?

Seokjin: That's right. Since you're a nice person?

경은: 아니요. 착하니까가 아니고, 저도 상처받기를 싫어하는 사람이기 때문에 남을 상처주고 싶지 않은 거죠. 그런 건 있는 것 같아요. 근데 그런 오디션 프로그램 말고도 또 서바이벌 프로그램도 있잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: No. It's not since I'm nice. It's because I'm also a person who hates getting hurt that I don't want to hurt others, of course. There's that kind of thing, I suppose. But aside from those talent programs, there are also survival shows, aren't there?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yeah.

경은: “나는 가수다”같은 프로그램이 있고, 또 요즘에는 김연아 씨가 인기가 너무 많으니까 그런 것도 있는 거 알아요? 연예인들이...

Seokjin: There are programs like “I'm a Singer,” and these days, since Yeona Kim is so popular, did you know what else there is? With entertainers...

석진: 들었는데 이름은 생각은 안 나요.

Seokjin: I've heard of it but I don't remember the name.

경은: 이름은 생각은 안 나네요. 저는 보기도 하는데. 그런 서바이벌 프로그램은 어떻게 생각하세요?

Kyeong-eun: Oh, I don't remember the name. And I watch it, too. What do you think of those survival shows?

석진: “나는 가수다”는 보고 있잖아요.

Seokjin; I'm watching “I'm a Singer,” aren't I?

경은: 저는 “나는 가수다” 완전 팬이에요.

Kyeong-eun: I'm totally a fan.

석진: 그런 건 참 좋은 것 같아요. 워낙 실력이 정상급인 사람들이 서로 만나서 서바이벌하는 경우니까, 떨어져도 그렇게 기분은 그렇게 안 나쁠 것 같아요.

Seokjin: I think this kind of thing's very good. Since it's where people with top-notch natural ability meet each other and try to survive, even if you lose I think you wouldn't have to feel too bad.

경은: 사실 경쟁을 하다 보니까, 점점 준비를 많이 해 오잖아요. 그리고 연습도 정말 많이 하는게 티가 나는 거예요. 그래서 실력도 점점 늘어나고, 원래 잘하는 사람들이었지만 실력도 더 많이 늘어나고, 관객 입장에서는 그런 멋진 공연을 매주 볼 수 있다는 게 너무 좋은 거예요.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, as they compete, they're coming more and more prepared, aren't they? And you can tell they've really been practicing a lot. So their ability improves little by little, and they were originally talented people, but their skill gets even better. For the audience, being able to see those kinds of excellent performances every week is great.

석진: 해외에 있는 분들도 이런 한국의 “나는 가수다”라는 프로그램 영상을 보면 되게 좋아하실 것 같아요.

Seokjin: If people overseas saw this Korean “I'm a Singer” program I think they'd really like it.

경은: 네. 그럴 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, I think so.

석진: 검색창에 “나는 가수다”. 받아쓰기입니다. “나는 가수다”이렇게 치고 검색을 하시면 영상을 보실 수 있어요.

Seokjin: Copy “I'm a Singer” into your web search box. Type in “I'm a Singer” like this and if you search you can watch it.

경은: “나는 가수다” 홍보하는 것 같아요. 저희.

Kyeong-eun: It's like we're promoting “I'm a Singer.”

석진: PPL? 아니고요.

Seokjin: PPL? No way.

경은: 근데 그런 “경쟁을 꼭 시켜야 되나?” 이렇게 나쁘게 얘기하는 사람도 많잖아요. 사실.

Kyeong-eun: But there are also a lot of people who say negative things, like, “Do we absolutely have to make people compete?” Really.

석진: 좋은 쪽으로는 경쟁, 괜찮은 것 같아요.

Seokjin: On the positive side, competition seems okay.

경은: 저도 그런 프로그램 보고 나면, 저도 “열심히 살아야겠다.” 이런 생각 많이 드는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: After watching that kind of show, I guess I also think things like, “I'll have to work hard in life” a lot.

석진: 누나 저랑 경쟁 뭐 해 보실래요?

Seokjin: You want to try to compete with me in something?

경은: 뭐요?

Kyeong-eun: Like what?

석진: 유튜브는 누나가, 조회수는 저보다 아직 적잖아요.

Seokjin: On YouTube, you still have less hits than I do.

경은: 그런 거요? 아니요. 안 할래요. 저희 일 열심히 해요.

Kyeong-eun: That? No. I don't want to. Let's work hard.

석진: 우리 같이 열심히 해 보자고요.

Seokjin: While we work hard together, too.
