Hyunwoo: Kyeong-eun.

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yes?

현우: 경은 씨 사진 찍는 거 좋아하죠?

Hyojin: You like taking pictures, right?

경은: 네. 좋아해요.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. I like it.

현우: 우리 지난번에 셀카 이야기 했잖아요.

Hyunwoo: Last time we talked about “sel-ca,” didn't we?

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yes.

현우: 경은 씨는 사진 찍는 것도 좋아하지만, 셀카도 좋아하잖아요.

Hyunwoo: You like taking pictures, too, but you also like “sel-ca.” don't you?

경은: 현우 씨도 좋아하죠.

Kyeong-eun: And you like it, too.

현우: 아니요. 저는 셀카 좋아하지 않아요.

Hyunwoo: No, I don't. I don't like “sel-ca.”

경은: 아직도.

Kyeong-eun: ...you're still saying that...

현우: 경은 씨. 근데 경은 씨는 어떤 카메라 쓰고 있어요? 지금?

Hyunwoo: But Kyeong-eun, what kind of camera are you using? Now?

경은: 저는 GF1.

Kyeong-eun: A GF1.

현우: “GF1”이라는

Hyunwoo: It's called “GF1.”

경은: 파나소닉에서 나온 카메라를 쓰고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: I'm using a camera from Panasonic.

현우: 파나소닉에서 나온 “GF1”이라는 카메라를 쓰고 있는데, 이 카메라는 얼마예요?

Hyunwoo: You're using a camera called the “GF1” from Panasonic, but how much is this camera?

경은: 비싸요.

Kyeong-eun: Expensive.

현우: 비싸죠?

Hyunwoo: It's expensive, right?

경은: 네. 비싸요. 큰 맘 먹고 샀어요.

Kyeong-eun: Yes. It's expensive. Buying it was a big decision.

현우: 맞아요. 비싸지만 큰 맘 먹고 사는데 왜 샀어요? 경은 씨.

Hyunwoo: That's right. It's expensive and buying it was a big decision, but why did you buy it?

경은: 예?

Kyeong-eun: What?

현우: 경은 씨는 사진 작가예요?

Hyunwoo: Are you a photographer?

경은: 아니요.

Kyeong-eun: No.

현우: 경은 씨는 사진관을 운영하세요?

Hyunwoo: Do you run a photo studio?

경은: 아니요. 제가 블로그를 쓰고 있어요. 근데 그 블로그에 사진을 찍어서 글을 올리면 인기가 더 많더라고요.

Kyeong-eun: No. I'm writing a blog. But I understand that if you put up pictures on your blog with your writings it's more popular.

현우: 그렇죠.

Hyunwoo: Right.

경은: 사실은 작은 카메라가 있었는데 그 카메라로 사진을 찍다 보니까 너무 재미있는 거예요. 그래서 더 예쁜 사진을 찍고 싶어서 그리고 저희 조카도 생기고 해서 예쁜 조카 사진도 찍어 주고 싶고 그래서 샀어요.

Kyeong-eun: Actually, I had a small camera, and it was so fun taking pictures with it. So because I wanted to take prettier pictures, and since my niece was born, I wanted to take pictures of my pretty niece so I bought it.

현우: 그게 중요한 거 같아요. 원래 카메라가 있지만 카메라가 고장이 난 것도 아니지만 더 좋은 사진을 찍고 싶어서 비싼 DSLR 또는 준 DSLR, 또는 미러리스[Mirror-less] 카메라를 사는 거예요.

Hyunwoo: I think that's important. You had a camera to begin with, but it's not even that it broke, but because you want to take better pictures, you buy a DSLR or a semi-DSLR or a Mirror-less camera.

경은: 네.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah.

현우: 그래서 여기에 들어가는 돈이 만만치 않은데.

Hyunwoo: So it isn't an insignificant amount of money going into it here.

경은: 현우 씨 카메라 많잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: You have a lot of cameras, don't you?

현우: 저도 카메라를 많이 샀는데 카메라도 그냥 사면 끝이 아니라 또 렌즈도 사잖아요.

Hyunwoo: I've bought a lot of cameras, but just buying a camera isn't everything, you also buy lenses, too, don't you?

경은: 그렇죠.

Kyeong-eun: Right.

현우: 카메라에 쓰는 돈이 굉장히 많은데, 제가 지금까지 느낀 거로는 다른 나라 사람들보다 한국 사람들이 카메라에 쓰는 돈이 굉장히 많아요.

Hyunwoo: I've spent a lot of money on cameras, but I've felt until now that Koreans spend far much more money on cameras than people from other countries.

경은: 그런 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: It seems that way.

현우: 그래서 한국 사람들이 특히 한국 대학생들이 유럽이나, 다른 아시아나라 또는, 미국, 호주 이런 곳으로 여행을 가면 다들 큰 카메라를 가지고 가요.

Hyunwoo: So if Koreans, especially Korean university students, take a trip to Europe or another country in Asia, or also the USA or Australia or these places, they all take a big camera.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그러면 현지에 있는 사람들은 “아, 이 사람들은 기자이거나 아니면 사진작가.”라고 생각하는 경우도 가끔 있어요. Hyunwoo: So people at the scene sometimes think, “Ah, these people are reporters or photographers.”

경은: 네. 그럴 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, I guess it must be like that.

현우: 요즘에는 다른 나라에서도 이런 큰 카메라들이 인기가 많은데 한국에서 가장 먼저 그런 유행이 생기지 않았나 생각해요.

Hyunwoo: Lately, these large cameras are popular in other countries, too, but I think Korea might have been the very first place that it became this kind of trend.

경은: 근데 한국은 조금 심한 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: But Korea seems a bit severe.

현우: 네.

Hyunwoo: Yeah.

경은: 제가 삼청동이나 인사동 이런 곳을 가면 정말 모든 사람은 아니지만, 거의 대부분의 사람들이 DSLR을 들고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: When I go to places like Samcheong-Dong or Insa-Dong, it isn't really everybody, but almost most people are carrying DSLR cameras.

현우: 다 사진 작가처럼.

Hyunwoo: Like they're all photographers.

경은: 네. 그리고 다 사진을 찍고 있어요. 너무 신기한 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. And they're all taking pictures. I think it's so curious.

현우: 그래서 사진이 전 국민의 취미가 된 것 같아요. 그리고 예전에는 사진을 찍는 것이 굉장히 어렵게 느껴져서 좋은 사진을 보면 “우와 이런 사진은 어떻게 찍는 거지?” 이렇게 생각하는 사람들이 많았지만, 요즘에는 좋은 카메라를 사면 그냥 찍어도 멋진 사진이 나와요. 그래서 가면 갈수록 사진작가들은 경쟁이 심해지고 그리고 사람들은 “카메라만 좋은 거사면 사진은 다 잘 나오는구나.” 이런 생각을 갖게 된 것 같아요.

Hyunwoo: So it seems like photography has become the whole nation's hobby. And before because it felt like taking pictures was extremely difficult, when they saw a nice picture, there were a lot of people who thought, “Wow. How'd you take this kind of picture?” but these days even if you just buy a nice camera and take pictures, great-looking photos come out. So it seems like the more time goes by, the more severe competition among photographers becomes, and people have the thought, “Ah--if you just buy a nice camera, the pictures all come out well.”

경은: 그런 생각을 갖게 되다 보니까 카메라를 더 사는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Since they think that, people buy more cameras, I think.

현우: 그냥 100만원 써서 좋은 카메라를 사서 찍다 보면 “정말 이렇게 좋은 카메라가 있으니까 이런 좋은 사진이 나온다.”라고 생각하다가 200만원짜리 카메라를 쓰는 사람을 만난 거예요. 그러면 또 그 사소한 차이가 크게 느껴져요, 그래서 200만원짜리를 사요. 그리고 200만원짜리를 쓰는 사람이 300만원짜리 카메라를 쓰는 사람을 만나면 또 300만원짜리 카메라를 사고 싶은 거예요.

Hyunwoo: After spending just a million won and buying a nice camera, if you try taking some pictures, while thinking, “It's really since I have a nice camera that these nice pictures come out,” you meet someone who's using a 2-million-won camera. So again you really feel the minor difference, so you buy a 2-million-won camera. And when people using a 2-million-won camera meet people using a 3-million-won camera, they want to buy a 3-million-won camera.

경은: 맞아요. 진짜 그런 것 같아요. 그리고 또 요즘에 광고도 많이 하잖아요. 그래서 자기 아이가 생기면 예쁜 사진들을 많이 찍어 놓고 싶으니까 “더 좋은 카메라를 사서 우리 아이의 예쁜 모습을 남겨 놓고 싶다.” 그렇게 해서도 카메라를 많이 사는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I think that's really the way it is. And these days there are also a lot of ads, aren't there? So if you have a child, since you want to take a lot of pretty pictures, I think they buy cameras a lot, saying, “After buying a better camera, I want to keep pretty images of our baby” like that.

현우: 네. 맞아요. 그래서 한국에서는 카메라가 다른 나라보다 특별히 싸지는 않아요. 굉장히 비싼 부분도 있어요. 한국에서 더 비싼 모델도 있는데 그래도 주말이 되면 사람들은 항상 카메라를 들고 사진을 찍으러 나가거나 카메라를 사러 나가거나 그렇게 해요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah, that's right. So in Korea, cameras aren't particularly cheaper than in other countries. There are those that are extremely expensive. In Korea there are more expensive models, too, but still on the weekend people always carry their camera and go out to take pictures or go out to buy cameras, like this.

경은: 그리고 또 한국 사람들은 사진을 찍는 것도 정말 좋아하지만, 사진에 찍히는 것도 굉장히 좋아하기 때문에 더 그런 것 같아요. 자기 얼굴이 예쁘게 나온 것을 굉장히 좋아하잖아요. 특히 한국 여자들은.

Kyeong-eun: And also Koreans really like taking pictures, but because they also really really like having their picture taken, it's like that even more so. They really like if their own face turns out pretty, don't they? Especially Korean women.

현우: 그리고 한 3년 전까지만 해도 싸이월드라는 웹 사이트가 굉장히 인기가 있어서 싸이월드에 사진을 많이 올렸었는데, 경은 씨도 아시겠지만 싸이월드에 올릴 수 있는 사진의 크기는 굉장히 작아요. 그래서 가로 픽셀이 300픽셀, 400픽셀 밖에 안 되니까 좋은 카메라로 찍어도 그렇게 큰 차이는 안 느껴지거든요.

Hyunwoo: And until just about 3 years ago, people had uploaded a lot of pictures onto a website called Cyworld because it was extremely popular, and Kyeong-eun, you know this, but the size of the pictures you can upload on Cyworld is extremely small. So since the pictures' width couldn't exceed 300 or 400 pixels, you couldn't notice a big difference even though you took the pictures with a nice camera, you see.

경은: 네. 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, that's right.

현우: 그런데 싸이월드의 인기가 조금 떨어지고, 페이스북, 네이버 블로그, 다음 블로그, 또 티스토리 블로그 이런 블로그들이 인기를 끌면서 크게 사진을 올릴 수가 있게 됐잖아요. 그래서 좋은 카메라로 찍은 사진은 정말 블로그에서 좋아 보이는 거예요.

Hyunwoo: But Cyworld has become a little less popular, and while Facebook, and these blogs like Naver Blog, Daum Blog, and T-Story Blog have grown in popularity, now you can upload big photos. So pictures you take on a nice camera look really nice on the blogs.

경은: 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

현우: 그런 부러움 때문에 좋은 카메라를 사게 되지 않나 생각해요.

Hyunwoo: Because of that kind of envy, I think people might end up buying cameras.

경은: 그런 것 같아요. 제가 생각해도요.

Kyeong-eun: I think so. When I think about it, too.

현우: 그리고 한국 사람들은 다 그런 건 아니지만 포토샵 전문가예요.

Hyunwoo: And not all Koreans are like this, but they're Photoshop experts.

경은: 맞아요. 진짜 신기해요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. It's really curious.

현우: 이게 저는 나쁜 거라고 생각하지는 않고, 그냥 전반적으로 한국 사람들의 공통적인 그런 취미가 아닐까 생각해요. 사진이 취미인 나라, 한국.

Hyunwoo: I don't think this is bad, just generally I think it might be a common hobby for Koreans. The hobby of photography's country, Korea.

경은: 그러네요. 저도 그래서 이제 사진 찍는 걸 취미로 하려고요. 열심히 해 보려고.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, really! So I also intend now to do photography as a hobby. And to really try hard.

현우: 사진기만 가지고 있지 말고, 사진도 찍어 주세요.

Hyunwoo: Don't just carry around the camera, please take some pictures, too.

경은: 열심히 찍고 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: I'm taking a lot of pictures.

현우: 제 사진은 안 찍어도 돼요.

Hyunwoo: It's okay if you don't take my picture.

경은: 안 찍을 거예요.

Kyeong-eun: I won't take it.

현우: 안 찍어도 돼요.

Hyunwoo: It's okay if you don't.

경은: 네. 걱정하지 마세요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Don't worry.

현우: 네. 안 찍어도 돼요.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. It's okay if you don't.

경은: 걱정하지 마세요. 안 찍을게요.

Kyeong-eun: Don't worry. I won't.

현우: 그럼 저희 사진에 대해서 이야기 해 봤고, 카메라에 대해서 그리고 DSLR과 같은 비싼 카메라를 사람들이 사는 것에 대해서 이야기 해 봤습니다.

Hyunwoo: So we've talked about taking pictures, and we've talked about cameras and people buying expensive cameras like DSLRs.

경은: 네. 여러분의 나라에서는 어떤지 저희한테 이야기 해 주세요.
