효진: 안녕하세요. 언니.

경은: 안녕하세요. 효진 씨, 오늘 우리 뭐에 대해서 이야기 할까요?

Kyeong-eun: Hello. Hyojin—what are we going to talk about today?

효진: 요새 언니, 비가 많이 오잖아요. 그래서 비 오는 날에 대해서 이야기 해 보려고 해요.

Hyojin: Lately, Kyeong-eun, it's raining a lot, isn't it? So we're going to talk about rainy days.

경은: 비 오는 날. 효진 씨, 비 오는 날 좋아해요?

Kyeong-eun: Rainy days. Hyojin—do you like rainy days?

효진: 옛날에는 좀 좋아했는데 요새는 별로 안 좋아해요.

Hyojin: I used to like them, but these days I don't care for them much.

경은: 왜요?

Kyeong-eun: Why?

효진: 그냥 비 오면 너무 눅눅하고, 집안에 있어도 눅눅하고, 밖에 나가면은 진짜 우산이 너무 많 아서 힘들어요.

Hyojin: It's just that when it rains, it's so damp, even if I stay in my house, it's damp, and if I go outside it's hard because there are too many umbrellas.

경은: 옛날에는 왜 좋아했어요?

Kyeong-eun: Why did you used to like them?

효진: 옛날에도 비 오는 날 밖에 나가는 거는 안 좋아했는데, 비 오는 날 집에 있으면 왠지 되게 좋 았어요.

Hyojin: Even then I didn't like going outside on rainy days, but, when I stayed home, for some reason I liked it a lot.

경은: 저랑은 반대네요. 저는 옛날에는 정말 싫어했어요. 집에 있어도 비오면 싫어했는데, 요즘에 는 비가 오면 좋은 날도 있어요. 실내에 있다던가 아니면 비 오는 날은 좀 춥잖아요. 그런 날 카페 같은 데에 가서 핫쵸코나 커피 같은 거 마시면 기분 좋고요, 또 집에서 빗소리 듣는 것 도 좋은 것 같아요. 그렇지만 그래도 비 오는 날보다는 맑은 날이 훨씬 좋아요.

Kyeong-eun: Wow, I'm the opposite. I used to really hate it. If it rained, even if I stayed at home, I hated it, but these days there are some days that I like if it rains. If you're indoors or on rainy days, it's a little cold, isn't it? On those days, if I go to somewhere like a cafe and drink hot cocoa or coffee or something like that, I feel good, and it seems nice also listening to the sound of rain at home. But still, I like clear days much better than rainy days.

효진: 그리고 비가 하루, 이틀 이렇게 오면 모르겠는데, 요즘 같은 장마철에는 언니, 지난 주 내내 비 왔잖아요.

Hyojin: And when it rains one day, two days, like this, I don't know, but during the rainy season like this lately, Kyeong-eun—it rained all last week, didn't it?

경은: 맞아요. 정말 비가 많이 와서 너무 싫었어요. 그리고 태풍도 왔었잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Because it rained a lot it was really awful. And there was a typhoon, too, wasn't there?

효진: 맞아요. “메아리?”

Hyojin: That's right. “Echo?”

경은: 이름 너무 귀엽죠.

Kyeong-eun: The name is so cute, right?

효진: “메아리”

Hyojin: “Echo”

경은: 태풍 왔었는데, 다행히 우리나라를 비켜 가서 큰 피해는 없었다고 하는데요, 그래도 조금 다 치신 분들도 있고, 사망자도 있어서 조금 안쓰럽긴 해요.

Kyeong-eun: There was a typhoon, but luckily it skipped past Korea and they say there wasn't any major damage. Still, some people were hurt and some people died, so I certainly feel a bit sorry.

효진: 매년 이렇게 태풍 피해가 있는 것 보면 되게 마음이 아프죠.

Hyojin: Seeing typhoon damage every year like this, I feel really sad.

경은: 근데 최근에 너무 신기한 게 있어요.

Kyeong-eun: But lately there's something that's really curious.

효진: 뭐요?

Hyojin: What?

경은: 최근에 여자들이 비 오는 날에 장화를 신고 다니잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: Lately, women wear rain boots on rainy days, don't they?

효진: 어린이들이 신는 그런 장화.

Hyojin: The kind of rain boots that children wear.

경은: 네. 옛날에는 어린이들만 장화를 신고 다녔는데, 요즘에는 효진 씨 같은 다 큰 어른이 장화를 신어요. 그렇죠?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. Only children used to wear rain boots, but these days adults who are all grown up like Hyojin wear them. Right?

효진: 저는 일단 언니가 저를 어른이라고 불러 준 게 처음인 것 같아서 너무 기뻐요. 감사해요.

Hyojin: First of all, I'm so happy because you called me an adult for the first time, I think. Thank you.

경은: 실수했네요.

Kyeong-eun: Whoops.

효진: 저도 얼마 전에 장화를 샀어요.

Hyojin: I bought rain boots, too, a little while ago.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Oh, yeah?

효진: 근데 저는 처음에는 장화를 별로 갖고 싶지 않았고, 그런 얘기 많이 들었어요. 남자들이 장화 신는 걸 되게 싫어한다.

Hyojin: But at first I didn't really want to have them, and I heard people talk like that a lot. That men really hate women wearing rain boots.

경은: 그래요? 왜 싫어할까요?

Kyeong-eun: Oh, yeah? Why would they hate it?

효진: 그냥 어린이들이 신는 거고, 약간 신으면 논밭에서 신는 그런 장화 같아서 싫어한다고 들었거든요. 근데 생각해 보면 제 주변에도 되게 많거든요. 장화 싫다고... “너는 제발 신지 마라.” (정말요?) 네. 그런 사람들이 있어요.

Hyojin: I've heard that they hate them because... it's just that it's what children wear, kind of, if you wear them, they're like rain boots you wear in a rice paddy, you see. But if I think about it, there are a lot of those people around me, you see. That say they hate them... “Please don't wear them.” (Really?) Yeah. There are those kinds of people.

경은: 제가 생각할 때에 한국 남자들은 조금만 특이한 그런 패션 아이템이 나오면 싫어하는 것 같아요. 무조건 싫어하는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: I think, it seems like when that kind of slightly strange fashion item comes out, Korean men hate it. I think they unconditionally hate it.

효진: 근데 솔직히 말하면 남자들이 어그 부츠랑 장화 싫어하잖아요. 근데 정말 실용적이에요.

Hyojin: But frankly, men hate Ugg boots and rain boots, don't they? But they're really useful.

경은: 진짜 따뜻하죠. 어그 부츠는 진짜 따뜻하고 장화도 괜찮을 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: They're really warm, right? Ugg boots are really warm, and rain boots look like they'd be all right.

효진: 비 오는 날에.

Hyojin: On rainy days.

경은: 네. 거부감은 없거든요. 남자들이 싫어한다고 여자들이 또 안 신고 다니는 건 아니잖아요?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I don't have anything against them, you see. It's not like men say they hate them so women don't wear them, is it?

효진: 네. 맞아요. 그리고 사실 남자들도 비 오는 날 운동화 같은 거 신어 보면 알겠지만, 진짜 짜증나거든요.

Hyojin: No, it's not. And actually if men also try wearing tennis shoes on rainy days, they'll know it, but it's really annoying, you see.

경은: 맞아요. 정말 너무 찝찝하고 저는 너무 싫어요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. It's really so unpleasant and I really hate it.

효진: 그렇게 남자들이 패션에 신경 쓰면, 여자들 패션에만 신경 쓰지 말고 자기들 패션에도 좀 신경 썼으면 좋겠어요.

Hyojin: If men worry about fashion like that, I wish they wouldn't just worry about women's fashion and worry about their own fashion, too.

경은: 이 레슨을 한국 남자들이 들어야겠는데요. 아무래도?

Kyeong-eun: Korean men had better listen to this lesson. No matter what?

효진: 한국 남자들을 싫어하는 게 아니랍니다.

Hyojin: I'm not saying I hate Korean men.

Hyojin: What do you want to eat? On rainy days?

경은: 파전! 해물 파전이나 부침개나, 김치전, 이런 거 생각나요.

Kyeong-eun: Green onion pancake! Seafood green onion pancakes, or pan-fried food, gimchi pancakes, I think of these kinds of things.

효진: 한국 사람들은 비 오는 날이면 무조건 부침개를 떠올리잖아요.

Hyojin: When it's rainy, Koreans unconditionally think of pan-fried foods, don't they?

경은: 맞아요. 그게 부침개 부치는 소리랑 비슷하다고 해서 생각난다는 이야기도 있고, 정확한 이유인지는 저도 잘 모르겠어요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. People say that they think of them because the sound of frying something is similar [to the sound of rain], though I don't know either if it's the real reason.

효진: 근데 저도 진짜 비 오는 날이면 그런 게 먹고 싶어요.

Hyojin: But, me too, really, on rainy days I want to eat that sort of thing.

경은: 그렇죠? 생각나죠.

Kyeong-eun: Right? You think of it, don't you?

효진: 비 오는 날 피자 먹고 싶고 그러진 않잖아요.

Hyojin: People don't say they want to eat pizza on rainy days, do they?

경은: 맞아요. 아니면 따뜻한 국물 마시고 싶고, 한국 사람들은 꼭 그런 것 같아요. 우리 그러면 비 오는 날에 대해서 이야기를 했는데요, 혹시 여러분의 나라에서는 비 오는 날 특별히 먹는 음식이 있나요?

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Or they want to drink hot broth, Koreans are always like that, I think. So, we've talked about rainy days, but are there any special foods you eat on rainy days in your country?

Hyojin: Do people wear rain boots in your country, too? Adults?
