Kyeong-eun: Yes?

석진: 이번 주제는 뭐예요?

Seokjin: What's today's topic?

경은: 이번 주제는요 MT예요. MT.

Kyeong-eun: Today's topic is M.T. M.T.

석진: MT!

Seokjin: M.T.!

경은: 여행가는 거죠. 여행.

Kyeong-eun: It's going on a trip. Traveling.

석진: 네. 그럼요.

Seokjin: Yeah. Sure.

경은: 여행이지만 학교에서 가는 그런 여행?

Kyeong-eun: It's traveling, but it's the kind of traveling where you go with a school?

석진: 네. 맞아요.

Seokjin: Yeah. That's right.

경은: 동호회나, 과에서 가는 여행, 그런 거를 MT라고 많이 하는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Traveling with a club, or a department, I think we often call that kind of thing “M.T.”

석진: 사실 이거 콩글리시인 거 아시죠?

Seokjin: Actually, you know that it's konglish, right?

경은: 네. 맞아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. That's right.

석진: Membership Training.

Seokjin: Membership training.

경은: 맞아요. 콩글리시.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Konglish.

석진: Membership Training의 약자입니다.

Seokjin: It stands for Membership Training.

경은: 석진 씨는 MT 많이 다녔어요?

Kyeong-eun: Have you gone on a lot of M.T.'s?

석진: 네. 많이 다녔죠. 제가 대학교 다닐 때, 동아리 활동을 많이 했었거든요. (네.) 그래서 거의 빠 지지 않고 꼭 참여했습니다.

Seokjin: Yeah. A lot, sure. When I was in university, we did a lot of activities with our colleagues, you see. (Yeah.) So I attended them every time and hardly ever skipped.

경은: 동아리, 동호회라고도 하죠. 이런 동호회에서 MT를 주로 많이 가고요, 과 MT도 있잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: We call clubs “dongari,” too. Mainly clubs do a lot of M.T.'s, but departments do it too, don't they?

석진: 네. 과에서 가는 MT도 있죠.

Seokjin: Yeah. There are department M.T.'s, too, sure.

경은: 네. 그래서 1학년 때는 사실 과 MT도 있고, 동호회 MT도 있고, 동기 MT도 있고 (맞아요. 맞 아요.) 정말 많잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. So freshman year, actually, there are department M.T.'s, and there are club M.T.'s, and classmate M.T.'s (Right. Right.) There are really a lot, aren't there?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yeah.

경은: 저는 다 갔어요. 그 MT를.

Kyeong-eun: I've done all of them. Those M.T.'s.

석진: 누나도 정말 다 갔어요?

Seokjin: Really even you went?

경은: 네. 전 다 갔어요. 저는 1학년 때 제 친구들이 굉장히 활동적인 친구들이었어요. 그래서 모든 MT에 다 가는 거예요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I went on all of them. Freshman year, my friends were really active people. So I went on every M.T.

석진: 왠지 누나는 부끄러워서 안 갈 것 같아요.

Seokjin: For some reason, it seems like you wouldn't go because you're shy.

경은: 그래요? 지금도요?

Kyeong-eun: Oh yeah? Even now?

석진: 지금도 약간. 그러니까 지금 모습하고 학교 다닐 때 모습하고 많이 다를 것 같으니까.

Seokjin: Now just a little. Since I think your appearance today and your appearance when you went to university must be very different.

경은: 네. 굉장히 다르거든요. 학교 다닐 때는 진짜 수줍음을 많이 타는 그런 학생이었어요. 그래도 그렇게 MT를 가면 또 잘 놀아요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. They're extremely different, in fact. In university, I was really a very timid student. But still, when I went on those M.T.'s, I had a good time, too.

석진: 예전에 제가 과에서 대표를 한 적이 있었어요. 과 대표라고 하죠. (그렇죠.) 그러면서 친구들한테 같이 “MT가자. MT가자.”그렇게 얘기를 많이 했었거든요. 꼭 경은 누나같이 수줍음 많이 타는 사람이 끝까지 안 간다고 그렇게...

Seokjin: I used to be a representative for a department. We say, “Department Representative,” of course. (Right.) At that time, I often told people, “Let's go on an M.T. together. Let's go on an M.T. together,” you see. Every time, people like you who were very self-conscious would say to the end that they aren't going.

경은: 저는 아니었어요.

Kyeong-eun: I wasn't like that.

석진: 아니었어요?

Seokjin: You weren't?

경은: 네. 저는 항상 모든 MT에 따라 갔고요, MT가면 정말 재밌게 놀았고요, 존재감은 없었을 거예요. 사실. 목소리가 작고 조용해서. 그렇게 시끄럽게 놀지는 않았지만, 항상 끝까지 남아있는 그런 사람이었어요.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I always followed them on the M.T.'s, and when I went I really had a lot of fun, and it was really like I didn't exist. Actually. Because I spoke so softly and quietly. I wasn't that loud, but I was a person who stayed through the end.

석진: 그럼. 우리 MT에 가면 무슨 일을 하는지 한 번 얘기해 볼까요?

Seokjin: So, shall we quickly talk about what we do when we go on an M.T.?

경은: 보통 어떤 MT를 가느냐에 따라 다르잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: Usually, it depends on what kind of M.T. it is.

석진: 그렇죠.

Seokjin: Right.

경은: 예를 들어서, 동호회에서 가는 MT면 그 동호회가 예를 들어 사진 동호회다 그러면 MT를 가서 사진을 정말 많이 찍고, 그리고 나중에 밤에는 술을 마시죠.

Kyeong-eun: For example, clubs' M.T.'s, if it's a photography club, you take a lot of pictures when you go, and later at night you drink, of course.

석진: 그렇죠.

Seokjin: Right.

경은: 그리고 과에서 가는 MT다 그러면 과에서 그 과가 어떤 과에 따라 다르겠지만 선배와 후배가 친해지는 그런 자리를 만들고 그렇게 얘기를 하고, 그리고 술을 마시죠.

Kyeong-eun: And on department M.T.'s, in that case it depends on which department it is, but, in order to create a situation for older and younger students to get closer, they talk and drink, of course.

석진: 그렇죠.

Seokjin: Right.

경은: 그리고 또 다른, 학교에서 하는 동호회가 아니라 그냥 인터넷 온라인 동호회 같은 것 있잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: And besides clubs at school, internet clubs have similar things, don't they?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yeah.

경은: 그것도 마찬가지로 자전거 동호회다 그러면 자전거를 타고 그리고 나서 밤에 술을 마시는 거죠.

Kyeong-eun: Likewise, bicycle clubs go biking, and then at night they drink.

석진: 항상. 밤에는 술을 마시네요.

Seokjin: Wow. Every time, at night, they drink.

경은: 그러게요. 한국에서는 그게 조금 문제가 되는 것 같아요. 술을 못 마시고 안 마시는 사람도 있는데, 꼭 MT를 가면 술을 마시잖아요.

Kyeong-eun: Exactly. I think that's becoming a bit of a problem in Korea. There are people who don't or can't drink alcohol, but every time you go on an M.T., you drink, don't you?

석진: 그렇죠. 사실 술을 마셔야지 재밌어요.

Seokjin: Right. Actually, it's only fun if you drink.

경은: 물론 그렇긴 하는데, 꼭 그 선배들 중에서 술을 억지로 먹이려는 사람들이 많아서 저는 그거는 좀 싫었어요. 그럼 꼭 MT를 가면 한 명이 아니죠. 여러 명이 취해 가지고 힘들어 하는 경우가 많았거든요. 요즘은 모르겠어요. 저는 대학 다닌 지 오래돼서. 요즘은 그렇게 술을 많이 먹는지는 모르겠지만, 제가 학교 다닐 때만 해도 술을 굉장히 먹게 했었어요. 그게 조금 힘들었던 것 같고, 그것 빼고는 다 정말 좋은 기억이었던 것 같아요. 확실히 MT를 가면 하룻밤 같이 자고 그리고 여러 가지를 많이 하니까 금방 친해지는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Of course it's definitely like that, because without fail there are some of the upper classmates who want to force you to drink, I didn't like that much. So every time you go on an M.T., it's not just one person, of course. Because several people are drunk, there are a lot of cases when it gets difficult, in fact. I wouldn't know how it is these days. Because it's been a long time since I was in university. I don't know if people drink so much these days, but at least when I was in university they really made us drink a lot. I think that was a bit hard, and aside from that, I think everything was a really good memory. For sure, on M.T.'s, since you sleep together all night and do a lot of stuff together, I guess you get close in no time.

석진: 그리고 MT하면 또 빠질 수 없는 게 “장기 자랑”이죠.

Seokjin: And on M.T.'s, without exception, there's the “showing off talents” thing.

경은: “장기 자랑”을 해요?

Kyeong-eun: People show off their talents?

석진: 저는 꼭 했었어요.

Seokjin: For me, at least, every time.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Really?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yeah.

경은: 저는 과 MT 아니면 “장기 자랑”을 한 적이 없는데요. 그거 말고 “수학 여행”아니에요?

Kyeong-eun: I've never done that if not at a department M.T. Except that, it's not a school trip?

석진: 아니에요. 아니에요.

Seokjin: No, no.

경은: 수학 여행을 가면은 “장기 자랑”시간이 있죠. 잘 생각해 보세요.

Kyeong-eun: When you go on a school trip, there's “talent show time,” isn't there? Think about it.

석진: 아니에요. 아니에요. 제가 MT 갔을 때도 “장기 자랑”해서 서로 좀 잘 보이려고 많이 했었어요.

Seokjin: No, no. Also when I went on M.T.'s, too, we did little talent shows to kind of make ourselves stand out to one another.

경은: 석진 씨는 그럼 뭐 했었어요?

Kyeong-eun: In that case, what did you do?

석진: 여러 가지 했는데, 지금 생각나는 건 연극했었고요.

Seokjin: I did a few things. At the moment, performing a play comes to mind.

경은: MT를 가서요?

Kyeong-eun: On an M.T.?

석진: 네. MT 가서 연극했었고, 그리고 노래 불렀어요.

Seokjin: Yeah. We did a play on an M.T., and we sang.

경은: 그렇군요.

Kyeong-eun: I had no idea.

석진: 합창으로.

Seokjin: As a chorus.

경은: 모르겠어요. 저는 소규모 MT도 많이 가서, 그렇게 백 명 이렇게 많이 가는 게 아니라 스무 명? 열 명, 스무 명 가면 “장기 자랑” 같은 건 안하잖아요. 그냥 서로 속에 있었던 이야기하고 그리고 서로 알게 되는 그런 시간을 많이 갖게 되는 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: Beats me. Because I've gone on a lot of small-scale M.T.'s, rather than a hundred people like that, maybe 20? If 10 or 20 people go, we don't do “talent show” kinds of things, do we? We just open our hearts to each other and I guess we end up having a lot of time where we get to know each other.

석진: 그래서 제가 여태까지 여러 MT를 다녀 봤지만, 가장 재밌었던 MT가 단 여섯 명이서 간 MT였던 것 같아요.

Seokjin: So I've gone on several M.T.'s to date, but I think the most fun M.T. was when only 6 people went.

경은: 그래요?

Kyeong-eun: Oh yeah?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yeah.

경은: 맞아요. 저도 여러 명이 가는 것보다 몇 명만 가는 게 더 재미있었던 것 같아요.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I think it was more fun when we went with a few people than when we went with several.

석진: 맞아요.

Seokjin: That's right.

경은: 그렇죠. 여러분의 나라에서는 그러면은 MT가 있을까요?

Kyeong-eun: Sure. So, everyone—do you have M.T.'s in your country?

석진: MT가 아니고 다른 말을 쓸 것 같아요.

Seokjin: I think they'll call it something other than M.T.

경은: 그렇죠. 여행 같은?

Kyeong-eun: Right. Something like taking a trip?

석진: 네.

Seokjin: Yeah.

경은: 그런 이야기를 쓰겠죠. 여러분의 나라에서 혹시 그렇게 여행을 친구들하고 아니면 동호회 사람들하고 아니면, 학교 사람들하고도 같이 가는지 저희 한국에서는 사실 백 명이서도 가도 MT라고도 하거든요.

Kyeong-eun: They must say something like that, of course. Whether in your country you go on trips like that together with your friends or clubs, or classmates—in Korea, actually, even if we go with a hundred people, we call it an M.T, in fact.

석진: 그럼요. 생각만 해도 너무 복잡해지는 것 같아요. 백 명.

Seokjin: Sure. If you just think about it, it seems so crowded. A hundred people.

경은: 그러니까 저희한테 이야기해 주세요.
