Hyojin: Hello, this is Hyojin An.

Kyeong-eun: Hello, this is Kyeong-eun Choi. It's nice to see you Hyojin.

언니.

Hyojin: Nice to see you, too, Kyeong-eun.

Kyeong-eun: It's really been a long time, hasn't it?

Hyojin: I think it's the first time we've done this since we did the Valentine's Day iyagi.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I think you and this topic are a really good match. Always Valentine's Day candy, snack foods, between-meal snacks... It's this sort of thing.

Hyojin: Actually, I don't really like this topic today. I think you're mistaken.

Kyeong-eun: Really?

Hyojin: Yeah.

Kyeong-eun: Oh, I was going to buy you some crackers after this lesson, but it won't do. In that case.

Hyojin: But, then again, since it's something you're buying me, originally I don't refuse what my elders buy me.

Kyeong-eun: Don't worry about it.

Hyojin: No, that's how I've been taught.

Kyeong-eun: I'm sorry. Because all that time I'd been giving you snack foods as presents, and buying you snacks. I'm sorry. I didn't know.

Hyojin: If it's something you give me, I'll take it gladly. After this recording is finished, let's go to the convenience store together.

Kyeong-eun: That's okay. Actually, though, I don't really like snack foods.

Hyojin: Really?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. (No joke?) Yeah. It's the truth. I like some... The ones that taste like potatoes.

Hyojin: Potato chips? That kind of thing?

Kyeong-eun: I really really like potato chips and those kinds of things. Then again, but it's not like I go to the convenience store on purpose to buy chips to eat by myself. Because I'm with others when there are snacks I eat them. But I don't really buy snacks intentionally to eat by myself.

Hyojin: And, actually, I was lying. And because I love crackers so much, I go out and buy them quite a lot. Now, lately, a little less so, but when I was young, in high school, usually you eat your meals at home, don't you? Aside from when you're at school, on the weekend or those times, usually you eat meals at home, but if Mom and Dad were out, since I couldn't cook, instead of a meal I'd even just eat crackers.

Kyeong-eun: But even now it seems like you eat crackers instead of meals.

Hyojin: These days I eat meals and I eat crackers.

Kyeong-eun: In that case, what kind of snacks do you eat, mostly?

Hyojin: If it's a snack food, I like it. Really.

Kyeong-eun: You like absolutely everything?

Hyojin: Of course there are also snack foods I don't like, but I like just about everything, if a new snack comes out I want to try it once and...

Kyeong-eun: What's your favorite snack food?

Hyojin: That's a tough question. There are a lot of snacks I really like, among the older ones, I like “Saddo Rice” and...

Kyeong-eun: It's been a long time since I heard the words “Saddo rice.”

Hyojin: I like something called “Banana Kick,” and I also like things made with chocolate, and potato chips, and “Swing Chips” have red in them, right, I really like that too, and I like “Big Pie” and “Oh, Yes” and “ChocoHaim.” There are a lot of things I really like.

Kyeong-eun: I see. But your stomach never hurts after eating these sorts of snack foods?

Hyojin: Why would my stomach hurt if I eat snacks? Why?

Kyeong-eun: But, people say that, don't they? “There are too many things that are bad for your health in snack foods.” “These new snacks are actually a little good for you.” There are a lot of those kinds of ads, aren't there? What do you think?

Hyojin: Actually, I think they're just as bad for you as before.

Kyeong-eun: You think they're bad for you?

Hyojin: Yeah. But since they're delicious, I eat them. But there's this, too: When you eat a whole lot of them for a while, you gain about 3 kg or so. Having done that, if, because you're too busy for a long time, you forget to eat them you will gain another 3 kg. I guess snack foods are really effective. Truly.

Kyeong-eun: You mean they have a bad effect, right?

Hyojin: But when I eat them it puts me in a good mood.

Kyeong-eun: They put you in a good mood?

Hyojin: 'Cause they're tasty.

Kyeong-eun: There are a whole lot of tasty things in the world, aren't there?

Hyojin: Snack foods are one of them, too.

Kyeong-eun: I see... But Hyojin, do your friends like snack foods like that, too?

Hyojin: I think I like them the most.

Kyeong-eun: Since you're all adults now, your friends don't really eat them, right?

Hyojin: Adults eat snack foods, too.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. I guess there are quite a lot of people who like snacks around me.

Hyojin: Hyunwoo.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. Hyunwoo is even a person who eats snacks instead of meals, isn't he?

Hyojin: Seems that way. I think he's a little special that way.

Kyeong-eun: Really?

Hyojin: Yeah. Rather than eating some snack because it's yummy like me, it's just, when you eat a meal you have to invest some scheduled time to eat it, don't you? But you can eat snacks while working, can't you? So I wonder if it isn't good.

Kyeong-eun: Ah, later we'll have to do an iyagi about snacks with Hyunwoo. But Hyojin, does it seem like snack foods in Korea are very different from those in foreign countries?

Hyojin: Yeah. I think Korean snacks are the most delicious.

Kyeong-eun: Have you tried eating a lot of foreign snacks?

Hyojin: I tried eating snacks in America a few times, and Japanese snacks, too, when I've gone to Japan for a little bit, or having gotten them as a present, I've eaten them. There was definitely one snack food I liked in America, but it was really salty. It was a potato chip, but it was really insanely salty. It was salty like just eating salt.

Kyeong-eun: That's right. And me, too—where had I gone, again? When I'd gone somewhere in Europe, I ate some snack food I'd bought—it was potato chips. It was so salty. I was really surprised. Why are they like that? It's curious, right?

Hyojin: I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that question.

Kyeong-eun: Everyone who's listening to this story—Please be sure to leave us a comment about how snack foods are in your country, and how they compare to Korean snacks if by any chance you've tried them.

Hyojin: Last time we had a Snack Contest, didn't we?

Kyeong-eun: That's right.

Hyojin; You ate a lot of snacks, didn't you?

Kyeong-eun: Yeah. I ate a lot.

Hyojin: I think it'd be interesting to go watch it again.

Kyeong-eun: Yeah, it would. If you missed it, please come to TalkToMeInKorean.com and watch it again. It'll be fun. And please be sure to tell us about it.

Hyojin: Yes.

Kyeong-eun: Have a nice day, everyone.

Hyojin: Have a nice day.
